Actually saying and backing the claims that global warming is real but not living a 100% environmentally free life style doesn't make you a hypocrite.

It shows you have a larger insight into the world around you and that you are aware that there is a problem. Now if you were to come on here and bash those not living environmentally friendly while you yourself did not, that would be hypocritical.

Okay, ideally, when (if) you shower/bathe, you're clean when you're done, right?

So then, you take a clean towel to dry yourself off. But, since you're clean, the towel should still be clean, right?

Therefore, I suggest we stop washing/drying our towels. If every American did this, it could help save approx 7 million cubic metric tons of energy per year (estimated by numbers I made up just now).

I just don't take showers. I coat my body with tuna, go outside, and let cats lick me to get clean. It's really great for my complexion, and it takes no energy, as well as feeds strange cats I've never seen before. It really is the way to go, I'm surprised you all aren't doing it. No need for towels, either.

Did you see America's Funniest Videos last week? The winner was a guy who opened his door in the middle of the car wash to wipe something off his windshield. The brushes were running and they just went to the back of the truck when he opened the door. And they came back up before he could shut it.

He had to hold the door on all the way home. But at least he made a profit thanks to his winnings from the show.

Anyway, thatguy, have you seen Road Trip? Thats like putting peanut butter on your wang and letting your dog lick it off. Only you have strange cats. I'm chuckling to myself as I type this. Oh, the images in my head.

I personally believe that global warming is expressly caused by the shifting of heat out of our cars and homes out to the atmosphere.

Seriously, I think this global warming political stuff is crap. In the 70s it was global cooling, and now supposedly it is warming...but nobody takes into consideration nature into the equation and just assumes it is caused by human technology and development.

You could just dry your washing in the (new and improved) sun instead of the dryer.

Around half or more of the American exchange students we get in the Student Vilalge have NEVER hung out washing to dry or done the dishes by hand.

Dude, they DO take it into consideration. And besides that, it's not just a few scientists saying it's real, it's the concensus in the scientific community – in North America, the EU, the UN. YES, there are historical fluctuations in the temperature of the earth. But the change this time is MUCH, MUCH faster and more drastic than at any time in history. And we're on a scale of billions of years here.

What's political is that Big Industry (petroleum, auto, etc.) stands to lose a lot of money if Global Warming comes to be accepted by the general public and they start changing their buying habits accordingly. So, what do you do if you're Big Industry and happen to be bloated with power and money? Well, you set out to discredit scientific findings as a reckless fear-tactic by Tree-Hugging Hippies who want to destroy our way of life and the American Dream!

The stupid thing, is if these industries and giants of business weren't so stubborn and rigid, they could ride this wave and STILL be profitable for a looooooong time to come. However, change is difficult, and status quo is much safer. The easy thing to do is get lobbyists and money to do their talking for them, with little regard to the effects they're having on the environment.

How come people will always quote Big Business as cooking scientific reports, but will not think that political agendas can and often do use cook scientific reports.

The UN report on global warming...the ones the scientists actually commented on said that the issue is not as huge of an issue as it is being made out politically.

And just recently a Scientific report stated that their numbers prove the Sun is a variable that has no effect on current global warming. Really, how did you test that science? You can't not eliminate the sun from environmental models. Also, scientists do not even take into effect water vapor in their models, because it is impossible to study water vapor movement throughout the Earth. Water Vapor accounts for more CO2 than anything else.

Global Warming is the latest scare crisis from humanity that believes that mankind has more power to affect this world than we actually do. The truth of the matter is we do not have any idea what is the norm or ideal temperature for the Earth because we have been on this planet for too short of a time...and we can't accurately know about how the natural course of temperature changes over time because of just natural cycles of the Earth, Sun, Weather...ect.

I would rather not cripple our economy against the other world economies because a political movement that is completely reliant on a theory which is based on flawed human models.

I can't and won't believe it.

Actually I think all cows should be killed because there methane emissions are destroying us all and making the world get hotter! I blame the cows for the world warming up during the ice age as well.

I'll have you know, maggots grow out of meat that isn't refrigerated. And the sun revolves around the Earth. History proves that there's idiocy in science, and that there has been for as far as we've recorded. The inventor of the idea of antibacterial soup was considered an insane radical in his day. Why do we have to believe the scientific fad of the time? There are two major ideas in science that are lacking full observations, yet have already been decided on by scientists. The first is evolutionary speciation, which is believed to be true mostly because segregated flies with different genes refuse to breed with each other. The second is global warming, where scientists have proposed data on the history of global temperatures and global CO2 levels.

Like Spak said, water vapor is concluded to be a much more powerful green house gas, anyways, so blaming things on CO2 is still a far over-dramatization anyways.

So wouldn't cutting down pollution and emissions be a goal ANYWAY for the people of earth?

Or do we just wanna f*ck the planet over for future generations and let them handle it? Seriously, a clearer more earth friendly way of life is the way to go REGARDLESS of how serious a threat global warming is.

Global warming is real. The real question is whats the cause. But either way there's not a whole lot we can do to stop it. But we can work to slow it down.

I was thinking about the shutdown of the Gulf Stream's Thermohaline Circulation. But it seems that concern is not a view point shared by many others. But loss of glaciers, extreme weather effects, spreading disease, species extinction, localized droughts and floods are all majors concerns of global warming.

This topic has provoked me into do some reading in wiki. I actually went into the site thinking I was going to find some highly biased writing, but it all seems very straight-forward material. Maybe carefully worded, but still it points out when data is from unpublished reports or when a viewpoint is tested and found to be unlikely.

The question is what is global warming really? we believe that the world is millions of years old, and we have scientific research showing that before mankind even lived on this Earth that it went through an Ice Age and back out of an Ice Age and there has been studies that show that climate has been much different in all areas in the Earth. In fact in some places it used to be much warmer allowing better conditions for making wines and such in areas it is too cold to make wine nows and grow crops now.

The point is there is a political movement that believes mankind's pollution is destroying the world, when there isn't much proof, only circumstantial evidence, based on flawed logic. So you dig into the ice caps and notice that in certain higher CO2 years that ice didn't freeze as hard as other years...does that necessarily link those two items together? No. because if you go broader and show a wider scales you realize that that fluctuation of temperature occurs on lower CO2 years as well, and has little to do with the ice freezing. You show glaciers breaking apart in the ocean, but that is a natural part of a glacier's life cycle because under the water the ice if frozen harder, and above the water snow has weighed the ice down and it has broken the older weaker ice off. Also, glaciers actually move because they are floating masses of ice, so you can't just rely on the same glaciers to be in the same area.

We are being lied to for political gain. Many scientists want endless money pit to do research. Others truly believe it, because they see the effects of smog in cities and hate it. But is it really worth hurting our industries for a unproven scientific theory that China and Russia have already said they will not sign on to. Yes, let us cripple our economy in a time when we are afraid we are losing jobs to outsourcing. Let us prevent our industries from getting oil in our country and force us to use foreign oil...all because of theory.

I agree that smug and pollution are bad for the environment. I believe we should continue to create cleaner burning fuels and more efficient fuels...and guess what we are doing that. Coal is about 4 times as clean to burn today as it years ago. But I do not agree in this paranoia movements that are bringing us to burn sources of FOOD for fuel, in a time when people are still starving to death.

I just feel we need to be smarter than that.

But lets end this conversation now...it is really not NWR worthy.

I just interviewed a seal and his only complaint was that penguins are too invasive. He feels that if global warming is occurring that is a good thing for him because the penguin will be forced to swim in the water more.

Sigh, 18 Days you are right 1 I have no science cred I am not a scientist. 2 As often many people do in threads, you mess state something when you are trying to think and type too fast. What I meant is not CO2 levels, but it does account for the gas in the air that can affect global warming.

Oh well, look I am not an expert, never will I be an expert. But I have done some research on both sides, and although I incorrectly typed it in this thread does not mean it isn't accurate.

Also as I stated I think we should be doing more and more for cleaning up, but I think it can be dangerous to force it upon our economy and business to the point it can't compete. Everyone has this idea that big business and corporations are evil, specially oil companies and such, but they aren't and they do spend money on R&D to make things cleaner, and they are pushing for better fuel economy in engines and stuff.

The truth is, if we lowered taxes on fuel we can cut the price down drastically. If the federal government would make one single standard of gasoline for the country instead of the states controlling the different blends we could enforce a very clean fuel and have more supply.

Oh well. I am a practical list, and the truth is we can't just make policy that cripples our economy when the rest of the world is not going to act...and we can't expect government to do the right thing, because they are all about the power grab.

But that is besides the point. I did mistakingly post my point about water vapors, and I don't have science cred so my entire opinion must be devoid of reason and fact...even though if you just look and find other scientists work that disagree with global warming you might find some interesting arguments that just might have merit. But then again, you would have to decide then to believe in the fear of global warming or believe in idea it is a hoax. The truth is neither is a good place to be.

I don't want to believe that the world is going to end because of Global Warming because if it is...there is nothing, I mean nothing we can truly do about it. The world is not going to change, and even our policies and ideas for changing it our stupid. But then on the other side is believing that scientists would be willing to to either purposely create the false conclusions to global warming or either political or personal funding reasons. Or, our scientists can easily make the wrong assumptions to data collected and ask the wrong questions to the relationships between elements in their research.

So yeah, the global warming debate is interesting, and most people that do not believe it is man made are not self fish and they aren't advocating no action to helping clean the environment. We are simply thinking we look at the problem from more rational eyes that won't decide to do something worse for the world...like use a FOOD SOURCE to create fuel...a food source that actually takes more energy currently to create it into a usable fuel than it creates.

But who needs a piece of paper to say they are allowed to express opinions and quote documents? No one here is actually conducting experiments and observations.

And to think there weren't any scientists before universities came along. It amazing we survived at all.

Not sure if you are serious, but science is more about what you observe and testing your hypothesis then someone who went to university. Some of the most brilliant people in our history didn't go to a university either.

Yeah I figured you were on the right track Spak. Water Vapour is a greenhouse gas. I just felt like some funhouse fun.

You do raise some intresting points, I agree taht biofuel is a poor 'solution' and will never really acheive anything. But you make some poor points, like the US shoudln't have to hurt it's economy while the rest of the world does nothing. News Flash: The rest of the world is already doing so much more, than the US. And here's the thing. If we DO act vigourosly on global warming and it turns out that the whole thing was hyperbole, so what? The global economy might go into slight recession but it couldn't possibly be hurt as much as it was in The Great Depression or any Wall Street collapse for that matter. Life will go on even with a weaker economy.
But
If we DON'T do anything and it turns out Global Warming is for real and is as bad as thousands of scientists say it is, we are absolutely screwed. Life as we know it, will not go on.

I'm not going to take my chances. Let's just play this one safe.

I was gonna shut up. I was gonna stop after my last post. BUT 30-SOME POSTS LATER IT KEEPS GOING SO I MUST CHIME IN!!!

Ok, in any industry, there are going to be people who are more interested in personal gain than the greater good. However, I think the idea that scientists are pushing this to gain research funding, rather than Big Industry pushing to discredit the findings about Global Warming or position it as "theory" in order to safeguard their financial standing... If you think about it, the scientists have much, much less to gain from being right.*

Any scientific movement is going to take flak when it is announced if it isn't beneficial to all involved, or if the findings are negative or unpopular. I mean, look at the great scientific findings of the past: Galileo was imprisoned and ridiculed for suggesting the Copernican model of the galaxy (that the earth wasn't the center of the universe). Before that, people were once convinced that the earth was flat, or that it was impossible to cross the equator because of the harsh temperatures. History is full of these follies of popular belief. But what is common to all of them? No matter how hard people fought against these scientific findings, inevitably they became accepted; it's hard to fight against overwhelming evidence for any period of time without losing credibility.

I'll be the first to tell you that certain things pertaining to energy and the environment don't necessarily make sense. I'm not convinced on the viability of ethanol, and I'm from Nebraska, where it could bring TONS of cash into the state. (Well, except in the case of closed-loop systems or in smaller-scale, local operations. Then, I'm all for it.) But Global Warming? The evidence is mounting, with even the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change concluding in their fourth assessment report (AR4) that:

• Warming of the climate system is unequivocal.
• Most of (>50% of) the observed increase in globally averaged temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely (confidence level >90%) due to the observed increase in anthropogenic (human) greenhouse gas concentrations.
• The probability that this is caused by natural climatic processes alone is less than 5%.
• World temperatures could rise by between 1.1 and 6.4 °C (2.0 and 11.5 °F) during the 21st century

They also talk about the measurements on how much oceans could rise, and all sorts of fun stuff like droughts, flooding, heat waves (do I need to mention the heat wave in France a few years ago that killed so many people?), and so on. That's 2,000 scientists from all over the world (150-some countries) who were involved in these studies. I hope I don't need to say what sort of weight that gives their case.

* Further, there is evidence that political lobbyists from ExxonMobil, in a memo to President Bush, pushed to replace the chairman of the IPCC with someone more "industry-friendly." That's also on the IPCC page I linked to above.

P.S. – 18 Days is right on. Except I feel that Green Industry could actually help our economy. Alternative energy sources are being refined and improved for efficiency all the time. I drove through California a few months ago, and there were MILES AND MILES AND MILES of wind turbines, as far as the eye could see, all generating clean and renewable electricity. That made me feel good. And then I come back to Nebraska where we're pushing ethanol so hard, and I hear a statistic that we're like the 6th windiest state. We have like three wind turbines in Lincoln that I've seen. What the crap? Makes no sense! From what I understand in speaking with someone from a biofuel company here in Lincoln, Wind-Power companies in California are making a killing. Unfortunately, here, our hesitance to adopt wind is at least in part because we have public utilities here who don't want to change. But it's frustrating that we've got all this potential, and we're not using it. And it's all because the status quo is easier in the short term, and that's what people care about. Folllow the path of least resistance. Well, the path of least resistance could land us in a pile of trouble later on, and it's stupid when we can do something about it now.

Actually I'm still waiting for the mini ice age scientists were predicting as well. My guess is if the world is getting hotter and colder at once, then it neutralizes itself.

Oh and for the record. I've refueled my car twice in the past 4 months, my household pumps it's washing machine grey water into teh veggie patch, which is also fertalised by our worm farm. We do the dishes by hand, and hang the washing out to dry on the line. We use recycled toilet paper and fill up our recycling bin quicker than our garbage one (Then again we drink a lot of beer.)
This is what happens when you live in a student household who's degrees consist of Enviro Science (x2), Marine Biology and Education.

Regardless of whether I personally do things that are healthy for the environment doesn't change the fact that the overwhelming consensus in the scientific community is that global warming is real. It would just mean I'm a hypocrite!

(But, coincidentally, I do ride my bike or take the bus to work and I live in a downtown area, so I can walk most everywhere I need to go. Today, though, I'm cursing the Wii Forecast Channel because it told me it would just be cloudy today so I took my bike, and it's been raining since I got here. )

I would have trouble riding a bike to my job considering even in the car it takes 2hrs one way.

Actually saying and backing the claims that global warming is real but not living a 100% environmentally free life style doesn't make you a hypocrite.

It shows you have a larger insight into the world around you and that you are aware that there is a problem. Now if you were to come on here and bash those not living environmentally friendly while you yourself did not, that would be hypocritical.

Okay, ideally, when (if) you shower/bathe, you're clean when you're done, right?

So then, you take a clean towel to dry yourself off. But, since you're clean, the towel should still be clean, right?

Therefore, I suggest we stop washing/drying our towels. If every American did this, it could help save approx 7 million cubic metric tons of energy per year (estimated by numbers I made up just now).

I just don't take showers. I coat my body with tuna, go outside, and let cats lick me to get clean. It's really great for my complexion, and it takes no energy, as well as feeds strange cats I've never seen before. It really is the way to go, I'm surprised you all aren't doing it. No need for towels, either.

Did you see America's Funniest Videos last week? The winner was a guy who opened his door in the middle of the car wash to wipe something off his windshield. The brushes were running and they just went to the back of the truck when he opened the door. And they came back up before he could shut it.

He had to hold the door on all the way home. But at least he made a profit thanks to his winnings from the show.

Anyway, thatguy, have you seen Road Trip? Thats like putting peanut butter on your wang and letting your dog lick it off. Only you have strange cats. I'm chuckling to myself as I type this. Oh, the images in my head.

I personally believe that global warming is expressly caused by the shifting of heat out of our cars and homes out to the atmosphere.

Seriously, I think this global warming political stuff is crap. In the 70s it was global cooling, and now supposedly it is warming...but nobody takes into consideration nature into the equation and just assumes it is caused by human technology and development.

You could just dry your washing in the (new and improved) sun instead of the dryer.

Around half or more of the American exchange students we get in the Student Vilalge have NEVER hung out washing to dry or done the dishes by hand.

Dude, they DO take it into consideration. And besides that, it's not just a few scientists saying it's real, it's the concensus in the scientific community – in North America, the EU, the UN. YES, there are historical fluctuations in the temperature of the earth. But the change this time is MUCH, MUCH faster and more drastic than at any time in history. And we're on a scale of billions of years here.

What's political is that Big Industry (petroleum, auto, etc.) stands to lose a lot of money if Global Warming comes to be accepted by the general public and they start changing their buying habits accordingly. So, what do you do if you're Big Industry and happen to be bloated with power and money? Well, you set out to discredit scientific findings as a reckless fear-tactic by Tree-Hugging Hippies who want to destroy our way of life and the American Dream!

The stupid thing, is if these industries and giants of business weren't so stubborn and rigid, they could ride this wave and STILL be profitable for a looooooong time to come. However, change is difficult, and status quo is much safer. The easy thing to do is get lobbyists and money to do their talking for them, with little regard to the effects they're having on the environment.

How come people will always quote Big Business as cooking scientific reports, but will not think that political agendas can and often do use cook scientific reports.

The UN report on global warming...the ones the scientists actually commented on said that the issue is not as huge of an issue as it is being made out politically.

And just recently a Scientific report stated that their numbers prove the Sun is a variable that has no effect on current global warming. Really, how did you test that science? You can't not eliminate the sun from environmental models. Also, scientists do not even take into effect water vapor in their models, because it is impossible to study water vapor movement throughout the Earth. Water Vapor accounts for more CO2 than anything else.

Global Warming is the latest scare crisis from humanity that believes that mankind has more power to affect this world than we actually do. The truth of the matter is we do not have any idea what is the norm or ideal temperature for the Earth because we have been on this planet for too short of a time...and we can't accurately know about how the natural course of temperature changes over time because of just natural cycles of the Earth, Sun, Weather...ect.

I would rather not cripple our economy against the other world economies because a political movement that is completely reliant on a theory which is based on flawed human models.

I can't and won't believe it.

I'll have you know, maggots grow out of meat that isn't refrigerated. And the sun revolves around the Earth. History proves that there's idiocy in science, and that there has been for as far as we've recorded. The inventor of the idea of antibacterial soup was considered an insane radical in his day. Why do we have to believe the scientific fad of the time? There are two major ideas in science that are lacking full observations, yet have already been decided on by scientists. The first is evolutionary speciation, which is believed to be true mostly because segregated flies with different genes refuse to breed with each other. The second is global warming, where scientists have proposed data on the history of global temperatures and global CO2 levels.

Like Spak said, water vapor is concluded to be a much more powerful green house gas, anyways, so blaming things on CO2 is still a far over-dramatization anyways.

So wouldn't cutting down pollution and emissions be a goal ANYWAY for the people of earth?

Or do we just wanna f*ck the planet over for future generations and let them handle it? Seriously, a clearer more earth friendly way of life is the way to go REGARDLESS of how serious a threat global warming is.

Global warming is real. The real question is whats the cause. But either way there's not a whole lot we can do to stop it. But we can work to slow it down.

I was thinking about the shutdown of the Gulf Stream's Thermohaline Circulation. But it seems that concern is not a view point shared by many others. But loss of glaciers, extreme weather effects, spreading disease, species extinction, localized droughts and floods are all majors concerns of global warming.

This topic has provoked me into do some reading in wiki. I actually went into the site thinking I was going to find some highly biased writing, but it all seems very straight-forward material. Maybe carefully worded, but still it points out when data is from unpublished reports or when a viewpoint is tested and found to be unlikely.

The question is what is global warming really? we believe that the world is millions of years old, and we have scientific research showing that before mankind even lived on this Earth that it went through an Ice Age and back out of an Ice Age and there has been studies that show that climate has been much different in all areas in the Earth. In fact in some places it used to be much warmer allowing better conditions for making wines and such in areas it is too cold to make wine nows and grow crops now.

The point is there is a political movement that believes mankind's pollution is destroying the world, when there isn't much proof, only circumstantial evidence, based on flawed logic. So you dig into the ice caps and notice that in certain higher CO2 years that ice didn't freeze as hard as other years...does that necessarily link those two items together? No. because if you go broader and show a wider scales you realize that that fluctuation of temperature occurs on lower CO2 years as well, and has little to do with the ice freezing. You show glaciers breaking apart in the ocean, but that is a natural part of a glacier's life cycle because under the water the ice if frozen harder, and above the water snow has weighed the ice down and it has broken the older weaker ice off. Also, glaciers actually move because they are floating masses of ice, so you can't just rely on the same glaciers to be in the same area.

We are being lied to for political gain. Many scientists want endless money pit to do research. Others truly believe it, because they see the effects of smog in cities and hate it. But is it really worth hurting our industries for a unproven scientific theory that China and Russia have already said they will not sign on to. Yes, let us cripple our economy in a time when we are afraid we are losing jobs to outsourcing. Let us prevent our industries from getting oil in our country and force us to use foreign oil...all because of theory.

I agree that smug and pollution are bad for the environment. I believe we should continue to create cleaner burning fuels and more efficient fuels...and guess what we are doing that. Coal is about 4 times as clean to burn today as it years ago. But I do not agree in this paranoia movements that are bringing us to burn sources of FOOD for fuel, in a time when people are still starving to death.

I just feel we need to be smarter than that.

But lets end this conversation now...it is really not NWR worthy.

I just interviewed a seal and his only complaint was that penguins are too invasive. He feels that if global warming is occurring that is a good thing for him because the penguin will be forced to swim in the water more.

Sigh, 18 Days you are right 1 I have no science cred I am not a scientist. 2 As often many people do in threads, you mess state something when you are trying to think and type too fast. What I meant is not CO2 levels, but it does account for the gas in the air that can affect global warming.

Oh well, look I am not an expert, never will I be an expert. But I have done some research on both sides, and although I incorrectly typed it in this thread does not mean it isn't accurate.

Also as I stated I think we should be doing more and more for cleaning up, but I think it can be dangerous to force it upon our economy and business to the point it can't compete. Everyone has this idea that big business and corporations are evil, specially oil companies and such, but they aren't and they do spend money on R&D to make things cleaner, and they are pushing for better fuel economy in engines and stuff.

The truth is, if we lowered taxes on fuel we can cut the price down drastically. If the federal government would make one single standard of gasoline for the country instead of the states controlling the different blends we could enforce a very clean fuel and have more supply.

Oh well. I am a practical list, and the truth is we can't just make policy that cripples our economy when the rest of the world is not going to act...and we can't expect government to do the right thing, because they are all about the power grab.

But that is besides the point. I did mistakingly post my point about water vapors, and I don't have science cred so my entire opinion must be devoid of reason and fact...even though if you just look and find other scientists work that disagree with global warming you might find some interesting arguments that just might have merit. We are simply thinking we look at the problem from more rational eyes that won't decide to do something worse for the world...like use a FOOD SOURCE to create fuel...a food source that actually takes more energy currently to create it into a usable fuel than it creates.

Also as I stated I think we should be doing more and more for cleaning up, but I think it can be dangerous to force it upon our economy and business to the point it can't compete. Everyone has this idea that big business and corporations are evil, specially oil companies and such, but they aren't and they do spend money on R&D to make things cleaner, and they are pushing for better fuel economy in engines and stuff.

The truth is, if we lowered taxes on fuel we can cut the price down drastically. If the federal government would make one single standard of gasoline for the country instead of the states controlling the different blends we could enforce a very clean fuel and have more supply.

Oh well. I am a practical list, and the truth is we can't just make policy that cripples our economy when the rest of the world is not going to act...and we can't expect government to do the right thing, because they are all about the power grab.

But that is besides the point. I did mistakingly post my point about water vapors, and I don't have science cred so my entire opinion must be devoid of reason and fact...even though if you just look and find other scientists work that disagree with global warming you might find some interesting arguments that just might have merit. Not sure if you are serious, but science is more about what you observe and testing your hypothesis then someone who went to university. Some of the most brilliant people in our history didn't go to a university either.

Yeah I figured you were on the right track Spak. Water Vapour is a greenhouse gas. I just felt like some funhouse fun.

You do raise some intresting points, I agree taht biofuel is a poor 'solution' and will never really acheive anything. But you make some poor points, like the US shoudln't have to hurt it's economy while the rest of the world does nothing. News Flash: The rest of the world is already doing so much more, than the US. And here's the thing. If we DO act vigourosly on global warming and it turns out that the whole thing was hyperbole, so what? The global economy might go into slight recession but it couldn't possibly be hurt as much as it was in The Great Depression or any Wall Street collapse for that matter. Life will go on even with a weaker economy.
But
If we DON'T do anything and it turns out Global Warming is for real and is as bad as thousands of scientists say it is, we are absolutely screwed. Life as we know it, will not go on.

I'm not going to take my chances. Let's just play this one safe.

I was gonna shut up. I was gonna stop after my last post. BUT 30-SOME POSTS LATER IT KEEPS GOING SO I MUST CHIME IN!!!

Ok, in any industry, there are going to be people who are more interested in personal gain than the greater good. However, I think the idea that scientists are pushing this to gain research funding, rather than Big Industry pushing to discredit the findings about Global Warming or position it as "theory" in order to safeguard their financial standing... If you think about it, the scientists have much, much less to gain from being right.*

Any scientific movement is going to take flak when it is announced if it isn't beneficial to all involved, or if the findings are negative or unpopular. I mean, look at the great scientific findings of the past: Galileo was imprisoned and ridiculed for suggesting the Copernican model of the galaxy (that the earth wasn't the center of the universe). Before that, people were once convinced that the earth was flat, or that it was impossible to cross the equator because of the harsh temperatures. History is full of these follies of popular belief. But what is common to all of them? No matter how hard people fought against these scientific findings, inevitably they became accepted; it's hard to fight against overwhelming evidence for any period of time without losing credibility.

I'll be the first to tell you that certain things pertaining to energy and the environment don't necessarily make sense. I'm not convinced on the viability of ethanol, and I'm from Nebraska, where it could bring TONS of cash into the state. (Well, except in the case of closed-loop systems or in smaller-scale, local operations. Then, I'm all for it.) But Global Warming? The evidence is mounting, with even the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change concluding in their fourth assessment report (AR4) that:

• Warming of the climate system is unequivocal.
• Most of (>50% of) the observed increase in globally averaged temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely (confidence level >90%) due to the observed increase in anthropogenic (human) greenhouse gas concentrations.
• The probability that this is caused by natural climatic processes alone is less than 5%.
• World temperatures could rise by between 1.1 and 6.4 °C (2.0 and 11.5 °F) during the 21st century

They also talk about the measurements on how much oceans could rise, and all sorts of fun stuff like droughts, flooding, heat waves (do I need to mention the heat wave in France a few years ago that killed so many people?), and so on. That's 2,000 scientists from all over the world (150-some countries) who were involved in these studies. I hope I don't need to say what sort of weight that gives their case.

* Further, there is evidence that political lobbyists from ExxonMobil, in a memo to President Bush, pushed to replace the chairman of the IPCC with someone more "industry-friendly." That's also on the IPCC page I linked to above.

P.S. – 18 Days is right on. Except I feel that Green Industry could actually help our economy. Alternative energy sources are being refined and improved for efficiency all the time. I drove through California a few months ago, and there were MILES AND MILES AND MILES of wind turbines, as far as the eye could see, all generating clean and renewable electricity. That made me feel good. And then I come back to Nebraska where we're pushing ethanol so hard, and I hear a statistic that we're like the 6th windiest state. We have like three wind turbines in Lincoln that I've seen. What the crap? Makes no sense! From what I understand in speaking with someone from a biofuel company here in Lincoln, Wind-Power companies in California are making a killing. Unfortunately, here, our hesitance to adopt wind is at least in part because we have public utilities here who don't want to change. But it's frustrating that we've got all this potential, and we're not using it. And it's all because the status quo is easier in the short term, and that's what people care about. Folllow the path of least resistance. Well, the path of least resistance could land us in a pile of trouble later on, and it's stupid when we can do something about it now.

Oh and for the record. I've refueled my car twice in the past 4 months, my household pumps it's washing machine grey water into teh veggie patch, which is also fertalised by our worm farm. We do the dishes by hand, and hang the washing out to dry on the line. We use recycled toilet paper and fill up our recycling bin quicker than our garbage one (Then again we drink a lot of beer.)
This is what happens when you live in a student household who's degrees consist of Enviro Science (x2), Marine Biology and Education.

(But, coincidentally, I do ride my bike or take the bus to work and I live in a downtown area, so I can walk most everywhere I need to go. Today, though, I'm cursing the Wii Forecast Channel because it told me it would just be cloudy today so I took my bike, and it's been raining since I got here. )

Actually saying and backing the claims that global warming is real but not living a 100% environmentally free life style doesn't make you a hypocrite.

It shows you have a larger insight into the world around you and that you are aware that there is a problem. Now if you were to come on here and bash those not living environmentally friendly while you yourself did not, that would be hypocritical.

Okay, ideally, when (if) you shower/bathe, you're clean when you're done, right?

So then, you take a clean towel to dry yourself off. But, since you're clean, the towel should still be clean, right?

Therefore, I suggest we stop washing/drying our towels. If every American did this, it could help save approx 7 million cubic metric tons of energy per year (estimated by numbers I made up just now).

I just don't take showers. I coat my body with tuna, go outside, and let cats lick me to get clean. It's really great for my complexion, and it takes no energy, as well as feeds strange cats I've never seen before. It really is the way to go, I'm surprised you all aren't doing it. No need for towels, either.

Did you see America's Funniest Videos last week? The winner was a guy who opened his door in the middle of the car wash to wipe something off his windshield. The brushes were running and they just went to the back of the truck when he opened the door. And they came back up before he could shut it.

He had to hold the door on all the way home. But at least he made a profit thanks to his winnings from the show.

Anyway, thatguy, have you seen Road Trip? Thats like putting peanut butter on your wang and letting your dog lick it off. Only you have strange cats. I'm chuckling to myself as I type this. Oh, the images in my head.

You could just dry your washing in the (new and improved) sun instead of the dryer.

Around half or more of the American exchange students we get in the Student Vilalge have NEVER hung out washing to dry or done the dishes by hand.

Dude, they DO take it into consideration. And besides that, it's not just a few scientists saying it's real, it's the concensus in the scientific community – in North America, the EU, the UN. YES, there are historical fluctuations in the temperature of the earth. But the change this time is MUCH, MUCH faster and more drastic than at any time in history. And we're on a scale of billions of years here.

What's political is that Big Industry (petroleum, auto, etc.) stands to lose a lot of money if Global Warming comes to be accepted by the general public and they start changing their buying habits accordingly. So, what do you do if you're Big Industry and happen to be bloated with power and money? Well, you set out to discredit scientific findings as a reckless fear-tactic by Tree-Hugging Hippies who want to destroy our way of life and the American Dream!

The stupid thing, is if these industries and giants of business weren't so stubborn and rigid, they could ride this wave and STILL be profitable for a looooooong time to come. However, change is difficult, and status quo is much safer. The easy thing to do is get lobbyists and money to do their talking for them, with little regard to the effects they're having on the environment.

How come people will always quote Big Business as cooking scientific reports, but will not think that political agendas can and often do use cook scientific reports.

The UN report on global warming...the ones the scientists actually commented on said that the issue is not as huge of an issue as it is being made out politically.

And just recently a Scientific report stated that their numbers prove the Sun is a variable that has no effect on current global warming. Really, how did you test that science? You can't not eliminate the sun from environmental models. Also, scientists do not even take into effect water vapor in their models, because it is impossible to study water vapor movement throughout the Earth. Water Vapor accounts for more CO2 than anything else.

Global Warming is the latest scare crisis from humanity that believes that mankind has more power to affect this world than we actually do. The truth of the matter is we do not have any idea what is the norm or ideal temperature for the Earth because we have been on this planet for too short of a time...and we can't accurately know about how the natural course of temperature changes over time because of just natural cycles of the Earth, Sun, Weather...ect.

I would rather not cripple our economy against the other world economies because a political movement that is completely reliant on a theory which is based on flawed human models.

I can't and won't believe it.

I'll have you know, maggots grow out of meat that isn't refrigerated. And the sun revolves around the Earth. History proves that there's idiocy in science, and that there has been for as far as we've recorded. The inventor of the idea of antibacterial soup was considered an insane radical in his day. Why do we have to believe the scientific fad of the time? There are two major ideas in science that are lacking full observations, yet have already been decided on by scientists. The first is evolutionary speciation, which is believed to be true mostly because segregated flies with different genes refuse to breed with each other. The second is global warming, where scientists have proposed data on the history of global temperatures and global CO2 levels.

Like Spak said, water vapor is concluded to be a much more powerful green house gas, anyways, so blaming things on CO2 is still a far over-dramatization anyways.

I was thinking about the shutdown of the Gulf Stream's Thermohaline Circulation. But it seems that concern is not a view point shared by many others. But loss of glaciers, extreme weather effects, spreading disease, species extinction, localized droughts and floods are all majors concerns of global warming.

This topic has provoked me into do some reading in wiki. I actually went into the site thinking I was going to find some highly biased writing, but it all seems very straight-forward material. Maybe carefully worded, but still it points out when data is from unpublished reports or when a viewpoint is tested and found to be unlikely.

The question is what is global warming really? we believe that the world is millions of years old, and we have scientific research showing that before mankind even lived on this Earth that it went through an Ice Age and back out of an Ice Age and there has been studies that show that climate has been much different in all areas in the Earth. In fact in some places it used to be much warmer allowing better conditions for making wines and such in areas it is too cold to make wine nows and grow crops now.

The point is there is a political movement that believes mankind's pollution is destroying the world, when there isn't much proof, only circumstantial evidence, based on flawed logic. So you dig into the ice caps and notice that in certain higher CO2 years that ice didn't freeze as hard as other years...does that necessarily link those two items together? No. because if you go broader and show a wider scales you realize that that fluctuation of temperature occurs on lower CO2 years as well, and has little to do with the ice freezing. You show glaciers breaking apart in the ocean, but that is a natural part of a glacier's life cycle because under the water the ice if frozen harder, and above the water snow has weighed the ice down and it has broken the older weaker ice off. Also, glaciers actually move because they are floating masses of ice, so you can't just rely on the same glaciers to be in the same area.

We are being lied to for political gain. Many scientists want endless money pit to do research. Others truly believe it, because they see the effects of smog in cities and hate it. But is it really worth hurting our industries for a unproven scientific theory that China and Russia have already said they will not sign on to. Yes, let us cripple our economy in a time when we are afraid we are losing jobs to outsourcing. Let us prevent our industries from getting oil in our country and force us to use foreign oil...all because of theory.

I agree that smug and pollution are bad for the environment. I believe we should continue to create cleaner burning fuels and more efficient fuels...and guess what we are doing that. Coal is about 4 times as clean to burn today as it years ago. But I do not agree in this paranoia movements that are bringing us to burn sources of FOOD for fuel, in a time when people are still starving to death.

I just feel we need to be smarter than that.

But lets end this conversation now...it is really not NWR worthy.

I just interviewed a seal and his only complaint was that penguins are too invasive. He feels that if global warming is occurring that is a good thing for him because the penguin will be forced to swim in the water more.

Sigh, 18 Days you are right 1 I have no science cred I am not a scientist. 2 As often many people do in threads, you mess state something when you are trying to think and type too fast. What I meant is not CO2 levels, but it does account for the gas in the air that can affect global warming.

Oh well, look I am not an expert, never will I be an expert. But I have done some research on both sides, and although I incorrectly typed it in this thread does not mean it isn't accurate.

Also as I stated I think we should be doing more and more for cleaning up, but I think it can be dangerous to force it upon our economy and business to the point it can't compete. Everyone has this idea that big business and corporations are evil, specially oil companies and such, but they aren't and they do spend money on R&D to make things cleaner, and they are pushing for better fuel economy in engines and stuff.

The truth is, if we lowered taxes on fuel we can cut the price down drastically. If the federal government would make one single standard of gasoline for the country instead of the states controlling the different blends we could enforce a very clean fuel and have more supply.

Oh well. I am a practical list, and the truth is we can't just make policy that cripples our economy when the rest of the world is not going to act...and we can't expect government to do the right thing, because they are all about the power grab.

But that is besides the point. I did mistakingly post my point about water vapors, and I don't have science cred so my entire opinion must be devoid of reason and fact...even though if you just look and find other scientists work that disagree with global warming you might find some interesting arguments that just might have merit. But then again, you would have to decide then to believe in the fear of global warming or believe in idea it is a hoax. The truth is neither is a good place to be.

I don't want to believe that the world is going to end because of Global Warming because if it is...there is nothing, I mean nothing we can truly do about it. The world is not going to change, and even our policies and ideas for changing it our stupid. But then on the other side is believing that scientists would be willing to to either purposely create the false conclusions to global warming or either political or personal funding reasons. Or, our scientists can easily make the wrong assumptions to data collected and ask the wrong questions to the relationships between elements in their research.

So yeah, the global warming debate is interesting, and most people that do not believe it is man made are not self fish and they aren't advocating no action to helping clean the environment. We are simply thinking we look at the problem from more rational eyes that won't decide to do something worse for the world...like use a FOOD SOURCE to create fuel...a food source that actually takes more energy currently to create it into a usable fuel than it creates.

And to think there weren't any scientists before universities came along. It amazing we survived at all.

Not sure if you are serious, but science is more about what you observe and testing your hypothesis then someone who went to university. Some of the most brilliant people in our history didn't go to a university either.

Yeah I figured you were on the right track Spak. Water Vapour is a greenhouse gas. I just felt like some funhouse fun.

You do raise some intresting points, I agree taht biofuel is a poor 'solution' and will never really acheive anything. But you make some poor points, like the US shoudln't have to hurt it's economy while the rest of the world does nothing. News Flash: The rest of the world is already doing so much more, than the US. And here's the thing. If we DO act vigourosly on global warming and it turns out that the whole thing was hyperbole, so what? The global economy might go into slight recession but it couldn't possibly be hurt as much as it was in The Great Depression or any Wall Street collapse for that matter. Life will go on even with a weaker economy.
But
If we DON'T do anything and it turns out Global Warming is for real and is as bad as thousands of scientists say it is, we are absolutely screwed. Life as we know it, will not go on.

I'm not going to take my chances. Let's just play this one safe.

I was gonna shut up. I was gonna stop after my last post. BUT 30-SOME POSTS LATER IT KEEPS GOING SO I MUST CHIME IN!!!

Ok, in any industry, there are going to be people who are more interested in personal gain than the greater good. However, I think the idea that scientists are pushing this to gain research funding, rather than Big Industry pushing to discredit the findings about Global Warming or position it as "theory" in order to safeguard their financial standing... If you think about it, the scientists have much, much less to gain from being right.*

Any scientific movement is going to take flak when it is announced if it isn't beneficial to all involved, or if the findings are negative or unpopular. I mean, look at the great scientific findings of the past: Galileo was imprisoned and ridiculed for suggesting the Copernican model of the galaxy (that the earth wasn't the center of the universe). Before that, people were once convinced that the earth was flat, or that it was impossible to cross the equator because of the harsh temperatures. History is full of these follies of popular belief. But what is common to all of them? No matter how hard people fought against these scientific findings, inevitably they became accepted; it's hard to fight against overwhelming evidence for any period of time without losing credibility.

I'll be the first to tell you that certain things pertaining to energy and the environment don't necessarily make sense. I'm not convinced on the viability of ethanol, and I'm from Nebraska, where it could bring TONS of cash into the state. (Well, except in the case of closed-loop systems or in smaller-scale, local operations. Then, I'm all for it.) But Global Warming? The evidence is mounting, with even the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change concluding in their fourth assessment report (AR4) that:

• Warming of the climate system is unequivocal.
• Most of (>50% of) the observed increase in globally averaged temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely (confidence level >90%) due to the observed increase in anthropogenic (human) greenhouse gas concentrations.
• The probability that this is caused by natural climatic processes alone is less than 5%.
• World temperatures could rise by between 1.1 and 6.4 °C (2.0 and 11.5 °F) during the 21st century

They also talk about the measurements on how much oceans could rise, and all sorts of fun stuff like droughts, flooding, heat waves (do I need to mention the heat wave in France a few years ago that killed so many people?), and so on. That's 2,000 scientists from all over the world (150-some countries) who were involved in these studies. I hope I don't need to say what sort of weight that gives their case.

* Further, there is evidence that political lobbyists from ExxonMobil, in a memo to President Bush, pushed to replace the chairman of the IPCC with someone more "industry-friendly." That's also on the IPCC page I linked to above.

P.S. – 18 Days is right on. Except I feel that Green Industry could actually help our economy. Alternative energy sources are being refined and improved for efficiency all the time. I drove through California a few months ago, and there were MILES AND MILES AND MILES of wind turbines, as far as the eye could see, all generating clean and renewable electricity. That made me feel good. And then I come back to Nebraska where we're pushing ethanol so hard, and I hear a statistic that we're like the 6th windiest state. We have like three wind turbines in Lincoln that I've seen. What the crap? Makes no sense! From what I understand in speaking with someone from a biofuel company here in Lincoln, Wind-Power companies in California are making a killing. Unfortunately, here, our hesitance to adopt wind is at least in part because we have public utilities here who don't want to change. But it's frustrating that we've got all this potential, and we're not using it. And it's all because the status quo is easier in the short term, and that's what people care about. Folllow the path of least resistance. Well, the path of least resistance could land us in a pile of trouble later on, and it's stupid when we can do something about it now.

Actually I'm still waiting for the mini ice age scientists were predicting as well. My guess is if the world is getting hotter and colder at once, then it neutralizes itself.

Oh yes Global Cooling. the 70s. It was later discovered that Nuclear Fallout was responsible for the slight dip in temperature. And NO we are not going to return to nuclear testing.

Oh and for the record. I've refueled my car twice in the past 4 months, my household pumps it's washing machine grey water into teh veggie patch, which is also fertalised by our worm farm. We do the dishes by hand, and hang the washing out to dry on the line. We use recycled toilet paper and fill up our recycling bin quicker than our garbage one (Then again we drink a lot of beer.)
This is what happens when you live in a student household who's degrees consist of Enviro Science (x2), Marine Biology and Education.

Regardless of whether I personally do things that are healthy for the environment doesn't change the fact that the overwhelming consensus in the scientific community is that global warming is real. It would just mean I'm a hypocrite!

(But, coincidentally, I do ride my bike or take the bus to work and I live in a downtown area, so I can walk most everywhere I need to go. Today, though, I'm cursing the Wii Forecast Channel because it told me it would just be cloudy today so I took my bike, and it's been raining since I got here. )

I would have trouble riding a bike to my job considering even in the car it takes 2hrs one way.

Actually saying and backing the claims that global warming is real but not living a 100% environmentally free life style doesn't make you a hypocrite.

It shows you have a larger insight into the world around you and that you are aware that there is a problem. Now if you were to come on here and bash those not living environmentally friendly while you yourself did not, that would be hypocritical.

Okay, ideally, when (if) you shower/bathe, you're clean when you're done, right?

So then, you take a clean towel to dry yourself off. But, since you're clean, the towel should still be clean, right?

Therefore, I suggest we stop washing/drying our towels. If every American did this, it could help save approx 7 million cubic metric tons of energy per year (estimated by numbers I made up just now).
