Niche Publishers and Developers
« on: October 16, 2007, 06:11:04 PM »
I ran across this article at 1up recently all about the world of niche game publishing, and it was a really great read. Really inspiring too, the 'ol David versus Goliath story... and I almost cried when I read how American Technos was forced to declare bankruptcy. Ironically the Playstation era was rough on a lot of developers because while it meant cheap media and cheaper licensing, development costs skyrocketed in a way that many weren't able to adapt.

Of course, I personally believe that courting these developers should be a priority for Nintendo, and that these developers could benefit from the Wii's large user base, lack of hardcore competition, and cheap developer costs. Wiiware even more so!

Man I really hope that niche gaming and simple games are able to make a huge splash on the Wii.

The Simple series is a pretty neat idea, and I have been tempted to buying Ninja Bread Man just to support a 3rd party trying to make budget games.  I hope the Wii becomes the system for unique game experiences and Niche game experiences.

Ninja Bread Man isn't broken or anything... but Dragon Blade is actually surprisingly satisfying.

Seriously though, I love Atlus. They prove that big budgets aren't needed to make a great game more than any other developer.

I've sunk 70 hours into Persona 3 thus far... which is amazing considering that I've practically sworn off traditional turn-based RPGs. It's part Harvest Moon style social sim, part dungeon crawler. Highly recommended. Give Atlus your monies.

I want some indie games like Bunny Must Die (just a bigger version of that, it's about 4 hours long).
