I disagree.
Final Fantasy VII was quite a good game. It lost much of the Final Fantasy feel that had existed in the pre-PSX era, but it was still a good game.
FF8 took it one step further. The game sucked. We can both agree on that.
FF9 was a good try. I will give them that. They combined the old art style with the old gameplay. The problem was that the characters were flat and insipid, and the story was more boring than Wuthering Heights.
FFX to be perfectly honest, I have not played, but I will say that it has the most god-awful voice acting ever, and any trace of Final Fantasy in the franchise has been lost with the game from what I know of it. Crystal Chronicles is more of a traditional Final Fantasy than Final Fantasy X.
Final Fantasy XI is also a disgrace. It's Japanese sales speak volumes about my own opinion of the game. It's the game I never wanted to see made come to life.
Final Fantasy Tactics was a freaking work of art.
Vagrant Story was a work of art. Square canned the development team right afterwards though IIRC.
Chrono Cross sucked ass. It was a complete disgrace to have the word Chrono in the title. The characters sucked, and the plot wasn't right. The game was decidedly mediocre.
Legend of Mana destroyed the good name of the Seiken Densetsu franchise. That game was horrible in just about ever way.
Parasite Eve was a work of art. Square made up for that one though, by making the second one positively sucktacular.
The only good things I have to say about Square right now are these:
Final Fantasy XII - Quest is making the game I hear. VERY good decision on Square's part. The Final Fantasy team can no longer be trusted to make a good game. They should just continue to make sequels to Final Fantasy X until people figure out that the franchise has been beaten to death years ago. Then they can fire everyone responsible for that disgrace.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles - The old artwork, and gameplay straight out of Seiken Densetsu. This game could be very very good.
Square/Enix merger - Enix kicks ass, and they haven't lost their talent. Hopefully they can give Square a firm kick in the backside for me.

Seiken Densetsu GBA - A remake of the first game is a good step in the right direction to recover the memory of Seiken Densetsu. It forces the team to relearn what Seiken Densetsu means, and hopefully the next real sequel will be fantastic.
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance - A sequel to the greatest Final Fantasy Gaiden that DOESN'T suck? I am all over that.
