It looks a bit...uh...empty.

A bunch of characters aren't playable...What else should we say about it? =3

That the icons look too big to accommodate the known playable roster.

I'd guess that they'll scale down in size as you unlock more, though.

There’s only room for 30 characters there. We have 22 characters revealed already and there are still 13 left from Melee.

1. Mewtwo
2. Jigglypuff
3. Pichu
4. Marth
5. Roy
6. Mr. Game And Watch
7. Captain Falcon
8. Falco
9. Young Link
10. Gannondorf
11. Dr. Mario
12. Luigi
13. Ness

But that would equal 35.

So assuming we didn’t get any new characters (which I don’t think is realistic), 5 of these previous characters would need to be removed. If we do get new characters, even more would need to be removed.

Then again they could always change it and this could just be for the demo version only. . .

Looks like they modified Melee's, screen doesn't make sense though, Sonics on there and lots of others aren't

Uh oh, people think that this is what the final set-up will look like?  They haven't learned from the early Melee demos?  Of course it'll look different in the final version...

Define "demos".

The Melee I played at cube club was identical to the final roster screen.

I agree this isn't what the final select screen will look like, though. Not by icon size, dimensions, anything.

Thanks, Bill.  Our top sleuth in action.  Or his just has a good memory.

Anyways, Even if that's the final screen as characters are unlocked, the entire screen could shift the arrangement.  That wouldn't be out of the question, but yeah, those emblems have obviously been enlarged.

The one I played at cube club had the row of  5 "?"s along the bottom and the space on the sides.

That can't be the final portrait size for characters.

I'm guessing it's a mock-up for the demo; after all the work they've put into the game, I'm sure it wasn't much trouble for them to create a dummy character select screen with larger buttons so there wasn't a lot of empty space. I'm betting this is basically what the final what looks like tho, just with more room for the others. It's better than the one they showed a bit of back in the Name Entry update, anyway.

It's a shame, cause I'd LOVE to count the question marks to get an idea of how many characters we'll see total.

That's probably why they aren't showing it

Nah, it'll be infinitely more exciting to be all "Well that looks like all the characters..." before getting punched in the mouth with a complete rearrangement of the character list revealing a few more characters! =D

I think this is just a demo character select screen, and basically proves what I assumed all along, that the demo going around would not reveal all the available characters, and would simply be just that a demo.

Also I don't think I would worry even if this was the actual menu screen...I remember Melee barely fitting all the characters in...and I think the icons on the character select screen shrunk a little to accommodate all the characters.  Think about it...why not have an appealing balanced character select screen when fewer characters are available and keep resizing it to make it fit when more are accessable.

Who the heck came up with that Melee demo build screen?

The early kiosk version had Peach, and the version I played at E3 2001 had Peach.
