I love the team fortress series, outside of goldeneye no other fps series has ever really captured me. I love the new cartoon look, and I think it fits the franchise quite well. I can't wait to play it. I think i'm going to buy the orange box really soon if i can scrounge up the money...or beg my brother for it.

Truly a great and diverse game, it beats Halo 3's online with the ugly stick when it comes to troop diversity and strategy (not to mention art style).

For how good it looks I was quite shocked at the rather easy to meet system specs. See, art style can trump hardware.

I was going to start a thread titled "Thinking about getting the Orange box.." but let's save the threads.

Anyway, I'm seriously considering it. 5 games for the price of one sounds like a deal this side of Wii Play. That and my PC can run all these titles no problem.

My only reservation is that I have one of those micro-form factor PC's, and I left my DVD-Rom out to make room for my CD-RW. It would be a pain to swap back and forth my CD-RW and DVD-Rom.

My other idea was to get via Steam. But I have questions about it. What are you allowed to do with any title bought via Steam? Can you make back up copies? Do you have to run Steam even for single player? How long does it take to download?

I won't buy it out of principle because all I really want is Portal. I already have HL2. I'm waiting to get the episodes until part 3 comes out and I can get them all in one cheap bundle. And I don't really care about multiplayer PC games, so TF2 does me no good.

Djunknown - buy an external case and put one of your optical drive in it, and run it via USB. I have a small for factor PC as well, I put my DVD-RW +DL outside because it's IDE (had it for a couple years), and my DVD-ROM is SATA, which uses less power. I'm running a 280 watt PSU, and it's a Dell, so it's pretty much impossible to replace, so I have to be very power conservative. I still manage to have a GeForce 7300GT, which has says it needs a 350 watt supply, but that's simply untrue. Last time I used Steam (and I DO mean it will be the LAST time), you have to sign in even for single player, although you can hack it, or at least could, to play without signing in. Tiy cab;t make backup copies, but you can install the game and run it on any system using your account to play it, or at least could a couple years ago.

To answer your question about steam...It's the best thing to happen to computer games sense computers.
Steam is the only way I'd buy a Valve game as it has a ton of things going for it.

1. You don't have to go to the store to get your game.
2. Your game work on any computer you log into with your steam account. I've downloaded a game, played it for an hour, gone to a friends house, signed in, downloaded it again, and played let my friend play it for a few hours.
3. Games also work offline (provided you sign in at least once). This won't work for TF2 (except the developer's commentary) but for half life and portal it would work fine.
4. You never need a CD key again. You'll never need a CD again. If you computer gets sucked into a BLACK FREAKING HOLE you can just resume your game (from the beginning) on your new computer. I've transferred the Steam directory from my computer to a completely different computer, just copy and past, and it worked perfectly.

On topic, TF2 is the best thing to happen to Team Fortress sense computers.

Edit: I forgot to answer your questions...You can do a lot with it. You can make backup copies (but you don't need to). You need to use steam but you don't have to be online when playing single player games, it's not an issue really. It can be a bit of a wait, but a lot of the games share components, for example Portal, TF2 and HL2:ep2 all use the same engine, so you only download that once. The actual time it takes depends on your internet connection and day. If you download it the first day it comes out, it will be a slightly slower download than normal, any other day and you will most certainly be the bottleneck. You can pre-order now, and download all the files ahead of time, when the game comes out it will unlock all the files, and you can play the TF2 beta right now.

This is one of the few games I am jealous of the Xbox 360 for getting.

I know I could buy it on PC but I don't play nor do I enjoy PC games. I just can't stand controlling PC games, even FPSers.

This game on the Wii would have been awesome though. I think a budget priced $29.99 with Wii controls, and online play with a friend next to you would have been awesome...and would have sold incredibly well with the Wii audience...specially with that beautiful art direction.

Yes Team Fortress 2 would be great on Wii, it is a well optimized game and there should be no problem with it playing on Wii.

TF2 and Portal are breaking me apart, since HL2 and CS-Source started giving me problems (video crashing or something of the sort, but it was freaking annoying, specially because my computer can perfectly run those 2 damn games), I now have this rule that I won't play PC games ever again.

I would buy it in a heartbeat. I'm not an FPS gamer, but I'm a sucker for action games with great team work and well defined roles.

Thanks for the tips Brandogg and Grant10k. Both are equally valid options which I'll carefully consider...

Though I wouldn't be surprised if they made some sort of 'mega-box' when episode 3 comes out. But who knows when it will come out?

So I wound up picking up a physical copy of the Orange Box after some careful thinking. I've already had experience buying games online thanks to VC, but I couldn't bring myself to plunk down 44.95 for what essentially something I can't manifest in the physical world. So I put my DVD-Rom back in the PC, leaving my CD-RW out and about until I feel the need to burn a CD. But now that I have Steam, I'll pick up Half Life:Source at a later time to truly test out Steam. So trodded to my local GS/EB and put the reserve.

Apparently, this GS was not up to date with their promotions, as the clerks looked at me like I was mad when I mentioned you get five dollars off. The person then looked at a binder with promotion reminders and did an 'oohhhh...' Now get this: They couldn't take the money off right away, they insisted that I pay the 49.99(Plus tax), and I'd get the 5 dollars back when I'd come and pick it up. Instead, I suggested that I pay the the 45.99 now, and not worry about the 5 dollars later.

So I go in today to pick it up, another clerk was present. When I gave him my slip and looked up my information, he asked for the 5 dollars. I told him about the pre-order deal, and gave me that 'you smoking crack' look. The manager behind this person was just as flabbergasted. I told them to look in their book of promotions which they 'ooohh'ed and 'ahhhh'ed. I found it very hard to believe that a popular title like this somehow went off their radar.

I'm surprised that its quite literally an Orange Box. This the first PC game I own that doesn't come in a jewel case. Unfortunately, I lack the space to put all the components on my PC, so I just put HL2 and Ep 1 and 2 for now. I'll try TF2 a little later. It runs without a hitch, HL 2 at least, so know my PC has some kicks left in it...

What are the impressions from other NWR'ers about TF2?

Sadly, that's becoming common as a cost-saving measure even in new, non-budget releases. On the other hand, most people I know put all their PC games in binders anyway. I just like having the jewel cases for long term storage so I can just put stuff I'm likely to take with me to a LAN party in the binder.

Half-Life2, Fear, and Unreal Tournament 2004 did not come in jewel cases. In fact, I think the last jewel cased game I bought was Blue Shift. Then again I don't buy many PC games. So I have the original boxes with the games in them sitting on my self. They're kinda awkward. Adobe CS2 and FrontPage 2003 both come in a plastic binder like a DVD case and I think I prefer that to jewel cases.

Either way I'll be getting the Orange box on 360. After sitting in front of a computer all day the last thing I want to do is sit in front of it some more.

I hate those extra fat DVD cases. They're designed to hold 8 or so CDs, but then they use the same exact package for the DVD release, and it's a stupid waste of space. It's harder to get the disc out of them, too.

I'll check system requirements, then probably buy the Orange Box on Steam. I hated that idea when Steam came out, but the continuing decline in value from boxed PC games combined with experience with Stardock and Nintendo have softened my opinion.

I love the DVD cases, they are much easier for me to line up nicely and are easy to get to. One thing I don't understand is why some PC games are still on CD, I'd think if you were getting a new game now days you would have a ::gasp:: DVD drive in your computer.
