Any news on the September Wii Firmware Update?
« on: September 21, 2007, 02:40:19 AM »
It's September 21st, the month will soon be over and there hasn't been any word about this Firmware update since E3 back in July. Since it was rumored to be a huge update, I would think we would have heard something by now if it were still coming this month.

My only conspiracy theory on the subject is that they are waiting for the Sony hype from TGS to die down.

It's more likely that it's just delayed as usual with these things.  We still don't have the Check Mii Out channel.

Sony Hype? What was announced?
I didn't really see anything from the Sony announced that would call for Hype.
Or are you just anticipating a big announcement of some sort?

Well, there isn't much.  They actually delayed Home and announced a rumble controller, but more than that was expected, which could have lead Nintendo to want to announce after them.  That's what I meant.

I think Sony not screwing up colossally is the equivalent of hype these days...

But Sony DID screw up royally again.

I am desperately waiting for this update as well.  I hope it isn't delayed and if it is...I hope it is not too long.  I for one just hope Nintendo does something great besides just adding the check Mii Out or whatever it is called channel.

I want an updated Mii channel.  Gamecube Classic Controller Support.  Playing games off of SD card support.  And Hard Drive support to for channel saves that will allow channels to play off of the hard drive.

I want USB Mass Storage Device support, extended USB keyboard support, and a Demo Channel. What was the big Internet surprise that was supposed to come at the end of this month supposed to be, anyways?

Perhaps the upgrade was the one bundled with Metroid?

I think we all assumed that it was a firmware update because many of the channels have been accompanied by firmware updates.

There definitely have been a lot of assumptions about what Reggie meant.  But there is a chance we already got the news and didn't really know that was what Reggie was referring to.

1)It could have been Neo Geo Virtual Console specific, and perhaps it was originally slated for the first Neo Geo games to have been released already.
2)It could have been the announcement of Turbo Graphics 16 CD games coming to the virtual console.

Both of those are channel specific.

But other rumors just make sense why they emerged.

1)It was believed that  perhaps with a Check My Mii upate we actually might get an upgrade to the Mii channel.  And I am still hoping that may be true.

no updates huh?

as much as i would love a really cool announcement, with every passing day i get the feeling we're going to get something lame like the check Mii out channel. not that its that bad but an HDD firmware update would be best.

(see what i did there? going the route people took with online in SSBB)

I don't think that was the surprise, however I bet we'll see someone at Nintendo spin this VC update into the "surprise".

Personally, I think the surprise is something that will affect the Wii on a number of levels...
1. The addition of new systems to the Virtual Console (NeoGeo, TurboCD, etc.)
2. Enabling the SD card slots to store and play VC games and other channels
3. New channels ("Check Mii out", Wii & DS Demos, Music/MP3 etc.)
4. Classic Controller support for Game Cube games
5. USB Hard/Flash drive support.

This isn't possible.

When you boot a Gamecube game, the Wii - for all intents and purposes - becomes a Gamecube.  In other words, it is no longer aware of things like the Wiimote, internal memory, wifi adapter, etc.

Since the GC's innards are built directly into the Wii, it's using pure hardware emulation to run games (in a sense, not really emulation at all, since again it is the same stuff).  There's no software layer, and thus there's no way to inject Wii components into a GC game session.  Further, the Wii doesn't have the processing power to emulate GC games.  It takes a huge amount of power to emulate via software, and the Wii just won't cut it.  Since the OS isn't running, the hardware can't be recognized, which means the CC can't be used with GC games.

The only way the CC could be used would be if you could plug it directly into the system, which would require a special cord and a hacker fooling around with it a bit.

I'm still hoping there's a way to get the CC to be used without the Wiimote (like some kind of transmitter or something), but eh.

I want the ability to use the home button or at least the power button while playing GameCube games but I'm afraid that's probably something they'd have to have built in to the hardware.

Is there any way, Nintendo could create an emulator that can access the Gamecube components of the Wii, to be able to play Gamecube games within the Wii OS.

If this is technically possible, then Nintendo can do a Firmware Update and provide everything we woud like with our Gamecube games.

1)Classic Controller Support.
2)Wii Menu button Support.

And whatever else Nintendo could decide to toy with.

Wii doesn't have the raw power to emulate the GC.  It's really that simple.

What I want is to use the Gamecube controllers to be able to be used in the wii menu and able to turn on the system in standby! Before anyone say something like the wii wasn't made to blah blah blah, plug in a wavebird, push a button in the menu and look at the receiver, then try it again in standby mode....Why must you mock us Nintendo!
