Flea market buying guide? (SNES/GB/GBC games worth it?)
« on: September 16, 2007, 02:06:37 AM »
I just went across a fleamarket and saw tons of GB, GBC and SNES games but I didn't know which ones would be worth it. I think it'd be good to get a "these are worth it if you see them" list together. Please don't mention the obvious Nintendo games, they'll just clutter up the list and everyone knows them anyway. NES games weren't sold at all, only SNES, GB, GBC, N64 and modern consoles.

Out of my old games (at least the ones I can find and/or remember) I'd say these would be worth buying on a fleamarket:
GB:
Nemesis 1 and 2
Parodius
R-Type 1 and 2
Megaman (but beware, it's effing hard compared to the console games)
Gargoyle's Quest (probably, haven't played it very far but looks good so far)

SNES:
Tiny Toons: Buster Busts Loose
Megaman X
Super Bomberman 2

I've seen some games quite often on the market and wondered if they're any good:
Axelay (SNES)
Spectre (SNES)
Exkaliber 2sumthing (SNES)
Shaq-Fu just kidding, I know about that one
Dropzone and Super Dropzone (GB and SNES, respectively) (Is that the game where you're playing an astronaut-looking dude who can use grappling hooks and a gun in a sidescrolling jump and run?)

Oh wow, Spectre. Used to play the Mac version of that a lot, and loved it. Doubt it'd hold up today though. It's pretty much a Battlezone clone, first person view in a weak (yet very trippy) 3D arena, shooting at other tanks and collecting flags. Super Dropzone's probably worth it, very nice Defender type game. Dunno what game you're thinking of there, Rad Gravity maybe? =x

The game I was talking about was a GB game that I saw on some pirate multicart. Seems to be a different game though.

Tiny Toons Adventure for the NES is an awesome platformer
Tiny Toons Cartoon Workshop was in my opinion revolutionary for its time, it offered a sort of creative outlet to make short cartoons sort of like Mario Paint.

Shaq-Fu might be worthy as a collector's item. No point in ever actually playing it, though. :P

I think even popular third party titles would need a listing since many were forgotten over time. Well, okay, Megaman is probably still popular enough (even though they've attached "known from the TV series" stickers to Megaman games lately...).

Well, I'd add in Uniracers on the SNES..

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the Koei SNES games... well, if you're into those genres, anyway. Uncharted Waters happens to have a cult following.

Axelay is my favourite SHMUP.  The Mode 7 effects were very cool at the time (and yet still tolerable today, I think).  There's quite a bit of slowdown in some areas but even so, I'd recommend it.

I remember the Exkalibur game, kind of a poor man's Ninja Gaiden if I remember correctly. It was average.

Recommends:
Plok (SNES)...it really needed a save feature, but otherwise it's a really fun and unique platformer.
Solar Jetman (NES) - interesting gravity-based spaceship sim/shmup(?) where you salvage stuff more than you shoot.  Only complaint is that the final level takes forever and then ends in a hard boss fight.
Rocko's Modern Life (SNES) - I admit, I haven't played it in a long time, but this game built around the "babysit the idiot" mechanic actually seemed pretty fun 10 years ago.

Avoid:
Total Recall (NES)
Tag Team Pro Wrestling (NES) - although it's almost worth it just for the comedy value.
That's my opinion, not yours.
Now Playing: The Adventures of Link, Super Street Fighter 4, Dragon Quest IX

I have Axelay.  It's a shmup made by Konami and the rumour is that it's from the Treasure guys before they left Konami.  It uses this nifty mode 7 effect to create depth though it looks kind of dated.  In the game you have a couple of weapons and are expected to switch between them as you go with certain situations damn near requiring them to survive.  The problem is that the weapons act as your hit points and disappear if get hit while using them.  So the problem is if I've already lost weapon B and the next formation of enemies clearly needs weapon B to kill I'm f*cked.  I think that's how it works.  I haven't played it that often.  If you like shmups you'll probably like it but I felt the weapon system was a little too complicated.  In a shmup I prefer to just shoot and dodge.

But on the SNES the general rule is that if it's made by Nintendo, Square, Capcom or Konami odds are it's worth buying.  At worst you'll encounter a good game that just isn't really for you (like me with Axelay).

And though this is obviously illegal I think trying old games out on an emulator is a good way to figure out what's worth buying.  As a used SNES game collector that's been very helpful.  I don't really like playing SNES games on my PC so I don't play them that much.  Just enough to get a feel for whether or not I'll like the game.  I don't see anything wrong with it.  I'm pretty much renting games that Blockbuster no longer carries.  I play it for a little while, decide if I like it, and if I do I add it to a list in my head of titles to watch out for and I never play the rom again.

Any of the Capcom Disney games for the NES are worth getting.  These include (but are not limited to) Duck Tales, Chip N Dale, Darkwing Duck, Aladdin, and Lion King).  They're especially worth it because their future on the VC is questionable due to licensing issues.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Just got Secret of Evermore for 10€. The cart booted and had saved games with level 50+ suggesting that the battery save hasn't died yet. The price happened because the seller insisted that I name a price and my mother commented "what are games worth, 10€?" and well, the seller said yes to that offer. Or should I have taken the Zelda: Oracle of Ages cart for 12€ instead?

speaking of flea markets, i bought a virtual boy at the flea market last week! For $5, well $10 actually, he originally offered it to me for $10 then we realized no ac adapter, then he knocked it down to $5, but i didnt have a 5, i just had a 20 and he didnt have any change to get me my 15, so I took it for $10. It would have been 5 though damn. So, i did some research and it uses a snes 2 ac adapter, and all i need now is some games.

I haven't had any luck at flea markets for months, and I can't even be arsed going to garage sales anymore, precious sleep time! Pawn shops are where it's at. <3

Got this lot two weeks ago, $18 in total.

Mystic Quest was an awesome game. I don't know if it was just me, but I had a problem with the game freezing up, though. It was the only SNES game that ever did that to me.

Ah, okay, looking it up on ebay shows that 10€ is the lower end of the regular pricerange for SoE. Well, at least I saved shipping...
