Oblivion Engine Optimized, Ported to Wii

A Wii version of the Gamebryo engine -- the same engine that powers Xbox 360's Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion -- joins the list of middleware tools available to developers of Nintendo's console.

"We are delighted to announce the Wii port of our Gamebryo engine," Emergent Game Technologies CEO Geoffrey Selzer said in a press release. Emergent is the developer of Gamebryo. "With the success of Nintendo's Wii console catching much of the industry off guard and offering fresh interactive features, developers need new tools to be able to develop for multiple platforms that offer vastly different capabilities and require different programming techniques."

While the port of Gamebryo won't get Wii games to as look quite as pretty as Oblivion given the different tech specs between Nintendo's console and Xbox 360, the middleware will allow developers to utilize development features that standard Wii development kits don't always include.

There is no word yet as to what the first Gamebryo-powered Wii title will be. More as it becomes available.

Here is hoping for some good games, not to mention the fact that it shows that it is possible to downscale engines for Wii.

I saw this and it is good news. Here's hoping Gamebryo runs better on Wii than Civilization 4: Beyond the Sword runs on my machine.

Hooray! More crappy third party games! Porting has never been easier!

Just kidding, but considering that developers are working hard on making advanced game engines on the Wii it would be annoying if third parties didn't use them.

In other words, no excuses for bringing/porting/designing bigger scale games. The only excuse is if they're either A) Lazy %#@^ or B)Hate Nintendo and/or money.

Just because this is the Gamebryo Engine doesn't mean it is super powerful.  I want to know how much "optimization" took place.  My guess is we wont know this till the first titles hit the system.

I dont get it...

If it the engine could be used to make Xbox and PS2 games, that what needed to be changed to make Wii games? Just adding the waggle controls to it? Perhaps the "optimization" uses a different process to make the graphically inferior games so that they look better on the Wii? What is it?
