Lair is this gen's Mario 64

Forget the negative reviews you’ve been reading about Lair, BRAINWASHING I KNEW IT this game is the real deal. Let me paint a picture for you, if I may be so bold… Picture controlling a dragon with the SIXAXIS motion controls along a beautiful backdrop fighting hundreds, no thousands of other enemies, pulling off combos (called Carnage), breathing fire on soldiers all while being taken through a very fleshed out, epic storyline and you have Factor 5’s best game yet: Lair. Let me also state that this game is not possible on any other system out right now as it makes full use of the Blu-ray player and the physics beast that is CELL. Free online leaderboards and the promise of Home compatibility round out this amazing package.

Lair is one of those odd games that comes out of nowhere and completely surprises you. It’s one of those rare gems that people will not appreciate at first, but grow to love over time.  Make no mistake, Lair could very well be this generation’s “Mario 64?. With greater use of motion control than any Wii game and better graphics than any 360 game  I think it’s safe to say we have a candidate for game of the year right here.

Now this all comes from the website Penny Arcade has been talking about for the past few days,

I would of originally posted this in the Lair thread or the Sony is in trouble thread but this really deserves its own thread.  I encourage everyone else to at least visit their site and lol at the posts they make and quote some of their quotes here.  Normally I don't hate on Sony this much, I am a buyer of some of their products but please I am glad Nintendo doesnt have a defense force, sounds like something Power Rangerish.

This is the same bullsh!t website that savaged BioShock and said 'wait for the [non-existent] PS3 version'.

Also, I like how Penny Arcade threw in a random MP3 reference in the middle of their Lair comic series. I was just playing that part of the game today.

Money quotes from all three of their reviews so far:

Sony have also come up trumps with providing dedicated servers for your Warhawk gaming pleasure with more servers coming up every day to meet the huge demand for the game...Warhawk is set to become the multiplayer game of this generation and has set a very high standard for future titles such as Halo3 and COD4 which may find themselves lacking in the diversity and sheer enjoyment that can be had with Warhawk.

Quote

I also wonder how much better the graphics would’ve been had they not been compressed to fit on a DVD...To conclude, let this game [Bioshock] cook in the oven just a little bit longer and wait for the superior PS3 version.

You can link to articles - linking directly to images which are not hosted by you (hotlinking) is against the rules.

If its something that you store in a personal website like a Photobucket or Imageshack account then you can link to that.

Penny Arcade found the site and just made fun of it but they feel that the site must be fake aka the PSP site just made to make fanboys yell.  It has yet to be proven as a fake site so until that comes true I am going to lol at the site.

I always saw them as kind of the Colbert Report of video game websites. Spoofing slated things like Fox News to the point where it's obviously a joke.

I mean, their reviews are pretty much always 10/10 for Playstation titles, while just look at how they reported the last NPD figures:

"The Sony Family showed very strong July sales with a total of 595,000 pieces of hardware sold. In comparison only 170,000 Xbox 360s were sold and the Sony platform even managed to outsell the much hyped Nintendo Wii which only reached a total of 425,000 sold. Here is the complete breakdown of U.S. game sales in July:

   PlayStation Platforms 595k
   Wii 425 k
   Nintendo DS 405 k
   Xbox 360 170k
   Game Boy Advance 87k"

They tend to be very anti-Microsoft in their reporting, and rarely pick on Nintendo in contrast though, for whatever reason.

Exactly, to me the site is an intentional joke site, leaning so far and biased to one side in order to be almost humorous (although without the general wit of something like the Colbert Report).

I'm trying to figure out who pays them to run the site.  If you follow a lot of their source links, it's good news for Microsoft or HD-DVD, or bad news for Sony.  They make MS a pivotal part of nearly every news story, I'd say that the website is MS sponsored, especially with the link to the Major Nelson page right up at the top right of the screen.  It's pretty funny, but MS is targeting the wrong company here.

Edit:  Nevermind, the whole thing has to be a Microsoft venture.  It just has to.  No matter what.

2x Edit:  WAITAMINUTE!  GP, did you start a anti-Sony joke site?

Lets not question the quality of Lair, because I haven't played it and can't attest to its successes or failures.

Instead I will just examine the Lair is this gen's Mario 64 and how moronic that statement is.

Mario 64

Mario 64 did not create the 3D platformer although it often times gets that recognition...it is because Mario 64 is the first that created 3D platforming successfully, and as such its standard is continued to be copied even today.  Mario 64 introduced the free roaming collecting based level design for 3D platforming, but it never fell into the annoying collection fests of later 3D platformers (Donkey Kong 64) because each Star was wrapped around a puzzle or specific object for that world.    Even its sequel Mario Sunshine was not able to live up to the greatness of 64 in terms of level design, creativity and the all important fun factor.  This is not the rambling of a fan boy for Mario 64 has found itself in the top 10 games of all times by several different publishers.  Next Generation Magazine scored it # 1 several years ago.  And I have never seen it listed below the top 20 games of all time.  Mario 64 also single handedly sold the Nintendo 64 to the world...launching pretty much the Nintendo 64 with a hand full of games didn't matter because everyone wanted to play Mario.  If that game had not been available at launch the Nintendo 64 may have never taken off, and Nintendo would have been in big trouble against Sega and Sony.  So quite literally Mario 64 alone fueled Nintendo's success in that generation.

So for Lair to be the Mario 64 of this generation it would have to:

1)Recreate the standard of an entire genre of games.
2)Single handedly sell the PS3 to gamers and launching the PS3 to success in the market.
3)Be award by gaming publications as one of the top games ever created in the history of gaming and take game of the year the year it came out.
4)Be imitated and copied by 3rd parties that can not create their own original formula for the same game genre.

Lair may a good game...it may be a horrible game.  But one thing is positive IT IS NOT THIS GEN'S MARIO 64.
