Actually playing the game won't be the first thing you do when you put the disc in your Wii.

There are probably plenty of people out there putting Metroid Prime 3: Corruption into their Wii for the first time and noticing a strange message. The first time you go to the disc channel a message will come up asking you to install a system update directly from the disc before playing. Thankfully this update happens very quickly so it won't delay the experience too much.

It's currently unclear what the update does exactly. There could be new Prime specific features or this could just be a way of getting already released system updates out to the people that don't have their Wii connected to the internet. We'll bring you any new details that come up as we become aware of them.

It's meant to CORRUPT your Wii.

Hypermode allows it to toast bread. Try it.

What's worrisome is that mine said "Wii update failed" until I tried it a second time. If this update is stored on the disk, there should be no room for errors. My Wii was fully up to date prior to this as well.

That doesn't necessarily prove this is Prime-specific... It might have just checked, saw your system was up to date, and quit.

It seems highly, highly likely that the update, which is only necessary for Wiis that play Metroid, is to enable the achievement tokens to be passed around through the message centre. (Read up on your Metroid previews if you have no idea what I'm talking about).

Since Metroid fans are the only one getting it, I'm assuming it's for Prime only online features, right?

Oh, and Super Paper Mario, which is famous for having an update on it, doesn't run an update screen if your Wii is up to date - so Metroid didn't just 'check' - it's for Metroid specifically. Unless Nintendo is going backwards with their system updates.

Confirmed: Only fans of Metroid are getting the update, if you are not a fan and bought the game you will not get this update.

So I missed a plane I was taking to Georgia, but my luggage with my Wii did get on the plane. Which means that, even assuming I could find a copy of it (having forgotten to preorder), I can't play it because my Wii is 2000 miles away.

It's pretty obvious that this update makes us compatible with Robot-1X.

maybe it's something deeper...

maybe it's a way for all wii's connected to the internet to send a message to nintendo saying that Wii bought metroid prime 3.

Using this and the total sales of copies sold. nintendo can determain the ratio of non-internet connected copies sold as compaired to internet connected copies sold.

Perhaps to determain how much of an impact their metroid preview channel had.

It has to do with the achievement tokens, there's nothing else it could be for really. You'll have to update the system if you rent or borrow it as well, or just play it on your console once, so it would be incredibly inaccurate to use for counting sales.

This is true, but even a rent means you were interested in the game. If it were to show 75% of sales were to people that had their wii's connected to the internet. Nintendo I think would be real interested in doing more game preview channels then
