Smash Site Icon Discovery...
« on: August 22, 2007, 06:36:25 AM »
This is taken from Smashboards.com so I won't claim credit for it, but has anyone noticed this?

Enter this address into your browser: http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/images/icon/world_b_01.gif  It's the SSB icon.

Now change the number "01.gif" to 02, 03, etc.

These are the icons of the SSB franchises which are being represented with at least a level. You'll cycle through all of the existing franchises from 1 through 12, but 13 and 14 have no icon (yet), but 15 is the Animal Crossing icon, 17 is also missing, but 18 is the Kid Icarus icon.

Since there's no rhyme or reason to have missing numbers on the list from 1-18, we can safely assume that 13, 14 and 17 all represent franchises which have yet to be revealed but will be at some point in the future, a fact which is corroborated by the Franklin Badge update which placed the Earthbound logo at 07 where there was previously nothing to load.

We don't know if it goes any higher than 18, but we know that these three empty spaces will be filled with something. If two of these will be Ice Climbers and G&W (Dr. Mario was represented by a mushroom logo), then that leaves MGS, but if either ICs or G&W don't return, there will be at least one more franchise on the roster which has yet to be revealed.

I'm personally hoping the numbers will hit at least 25.

Yeah I've known this for a while.

Also useless note: They've changed the logos a couple times. The Pokeball icon changed from both halves being dark to just one, and the mushroom icon went from being a plain mushroom to the spotted super/1up mushroom.

I hadn't seen those changes.

Interesting...

Well let's start breaking down potential franchises left...

Advance Wars (Sami)
Pikmin (Olimar)
Balloon Fighter
Punch-Out (Little Mac)
Custom Robo (Ray MK-II)
Drill Dozer (Jill)

Those are the franchises that make the most sense to me to include characters from...Anything else?

Where did you find that out? I know that a FE stage as well as Pokemon Ditto were supposed to be in Melee, but I heard nothing about Balloon Fighter.

Maybe the alternate music in the Ice climbers stage was a hint?

Actually Ballon Fighter wasn't supposed being in the game, but he was a character they considered.  If you read a translation of the Ice Climbers profile on the offical Melee website, Sakurai talked about how they wanted to have a character from an old Nintendo series that wasn't well known.  He then listed the different characters they thought about using which included Ballon Fighter and why they decided not to use them.  The reasons the Ice Climbers were choosen was because they were the classic character they felt would work the best as a playable character.

But this was over 6 years ago and maybe by now Sakurai has thought of a way to make Ballon Fighter a playable character.  But I wouldn't go betting anything yet since he was only considered for Melee, not planned.

Are you sure?  I could swear I've read a long while back that Balloon Fighter was actually in a beta of the game before ultimately being replaced by Ice Climbers, not just an idea thrown around...

Well, Brawl could indeed be the game Melee was supposed to be so I wouldn't be surprised if they finally integrate the Balloon Fighter into the roster.

Balloon Fighter has been used a lot by Nintendo lately. The original game was featured on Animal Crossing, was released on the e-cards thing, as a GBA title and is now available on the Virtual Console. Balloon Fighter was also heavily featured in the Wario ware games, especially Smooth Moves (which featured a pseudo 3D sequel to Balloon Fighter). So once again, it wouldn't surprise me if he was finally featured in SSB.

1 is the Smash Bros icon, 2-12 are all returning franchises, so is 14, 15 and above are new franchises.

Logically that would mean 13 is also a returning franchise. And Game & Watch is the only SSB/SSBM franchise which is yet to have an icon.

You heard it here first, Mr. Game & Watch returns!

*Unless the numbers mean nothing and it is just an extremely unlikely coincidence that all the new franchises and old franchises are not mixed together*

Did we really expect the Ice Climbers not to return, though? It's not like that franchise has progressed with new characters, making them outdated within their own franchise, and they were starters in Melee. If there are cuts, the clones seem most likely, followed by anyone who was unlockable.

I'm hoping it's just the clones (sans Ganondorf, of course) that aren't coming back, though.

Sorry to bump this back up but I was checking out Go Nintendo when I found this. Destructoid discovered the secret of the icons and even put their spin on it. You can read the article here.

Also, we can scratch Drill Dozer and Punch out as possible franchises since the characters are now assist trophies.

The part about the alphabetical order is interesting, but it could be just a coincidence as well.  Of course if it is true I'm hoping with all my being that it's Rockman in the number 19 spot then.

All this game needs is Megaman and the lineup will be perfect for me.  The combination of Mario, Sonic and Megaman together in one game would make Brawl the Holy Trinity of Gaming.

Problem is, he's translating the titles from Japanese into english and using that as his example...

All it "shatters" is the alphabetical one, which was a huge reach to begin with.

The 13= G&W and 19 = some other new franchise idea is still accurate.

I think that there is merit to the system, but I also think that this system can be easily added to.  Remember this system was formed before the delay, and therefore if the delay brings about another character or two it may not fit into the system.

I find it hard to believe that there will only be one more franchise introduced that has playable characters...So that one is silly, in my opinion... =)

(And I doubt the game was delayed to add characters, not to mention the fact that Sakurai most likely knew about the delay months ago...)
