PREVIEWS: Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
« on: August 13, 2007, 02:47:00 PM »
What are the Auroras, and how do they relate to Mother Brain?
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/previewArt.cfm?artid=14222

 The Metroid Prime 3: Corruption preview channel has been updated with two new movies, one of which reveals some shocking details on what may be a major part of the game's story.  The "Spider Ball" video is a demonstration of a large magnetic rail, just like those seen in the first two Metroid Prime games.  Samus is first shown traveling between two floating platforms via Screw Attack; the environment appears to be the sky city level shown at E3 2007.  On the second platform, Samus goes into Morph Ball mode and begins traveling up a vertical Spider Ball rail.  The ability to jump between opposite rails with the Boost Ball, first seen in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, is used abundantly in this video.

The other video is much more startling for fans of the Metroid series.  It is entirely story-based, explaining the origin of the Auroras, organic supercomputers developed by the Federation twenty years before the events of the game.  These artificial beings were originally used for scientific purposes but eventually became common in the military and other applications.  The Auroras are linked to a massive network with access to a common database.  The end of the movie shows a blueprint-style view of Mother Brain's lair from the original Metroid game, labeled "Future Aurora Complex".  Mother Brain herself is in the tank on the far left, and we can now see that she looks very similar to the Auroras shown previously in the movie.

Nintendo's official web page for the game explains even more about the story.  "The Galactic Federation's network computer, Aurora Unit, is suddenly and completely corrupted with something like a virus. The Federation believes Space Pirates may be behind the problem and are soon attacked. Samus and other hunters leap to their defense only to find that the enemy they face is Dark Samus, armed with immense power that no one can withstand."

I always thought that Metroid Prime took place between Metroid and Metroid II: Return of Samus.

I guess also since Metroid: Zero Mission replaces Metroid (and "Zero" Mission imples 0th), well, Metroid Prime would still be after (since "Prime" imples 1st).  No one else I know considers the renumeration but at the same time it's still the same thing.

So Mother Brain was already in Metroid/Metroid: Zero Mission, so why are we concerned about the Aurora now?  Unless they're just doing this retcon of sorts to imply that the Mother Brain in Metroid/Metroid: Zero Mission is not the same one as in Super Metroid.  Which I guess it isn't, since it did die in Zero Mission.  Though I remember wondering in Zero Mission why the bosses still appeared to have died as opposed to escaped since we see them again in Super Metroid...

Spoilers?  It's right there in the video, plain as day.  If Nintendo is beaming spoilers into your Wii, you can't blame me for repeating them on the site.

A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

Yeah, but some were trying to avoid as many plot details as they could (myself)

I not raising fault to repeating the information, but a more appropriate subtitle like "New videos release interesting plot details."

However, it's not a big deal ... I was exaggerating in my post.  Chances are that this bit of info is going to be presented in the first 10 minutes of the game anyways from what it seems.

(Seems they plan on linking Phazon to the corruption of these Aurora units as well)

No no, the Alliance wanted a perfect society and out of that the Reavers were born. The Federation wanted a supercomputer and out of that, Mother Brain was born. It's entirely different.

Maybe it's a Dell(TM) Mother Brain(TM) and in Super Metroid they just bought another one?

You'd think Sony would've learned to not have exploding power sources in the future. Then again, Star Trek always seem to lack surge protection for their screen panels.
