Exactly, with all the modes and content that's being added to the game, creating around 40 unique break the target stages would just be a huge waste of time that could be spent on more important things.  If that's what they had to sacrifice in order to get more characters, stages, a full fledged adventure mode and 4-PLAYER ONLINE in the game, I'd say that's a very good trade off in the end.

They have like a billion people making this game, there is no excuse. Especially since break the targets was one of the best single player modes in Melee.

And there most certainly is an excuse when there is a considerably good chance that there are new modes to conquer in Brawl...

No, not really any excuse. All the effort in making break the targets stages is in brainstorming the layouts. The actual construction of the levels probably would take them all of 30 minutes each.

The whole "they have to make this crappier to have this!" mentality doesn't make sense. Just people justifying a downgrade.

Even though these guys are good, they're not that good.  Trying to create over 35 unique stages for each characters Break the Target is going to take A LOT longer then 30 minutes each.  In Melee when the Adventure Mode was just a half assed 15 minute things, then yes they had plenty of time to make 25 unique stages for Break the Target.  But in Brawl when the Adventure Mode is now a full fledge experience, they don't have as much time to devote to something like Break the Target.

Not to mention, what if Board the Platform returns?  If they were to create unique stages for every characters Break the Target then they'd have to create a unique stage for everyone's Board the Platform.  That end's up being around 70 unique stages when you combine the two, which would take a huge amount of time.  Time that they'd rather spend on making The Subspace Emissary as polished as possible and be able to work on any other new modes like Bill said.

Try reading what I said. Of course coming up with the layout could take a decent amount of time. Which is exactly what I said.

They can do it for 28 or whatever the number of characters were in melee, they can do it with 32-40. It isn't a huge leap. Total bullshit that people would think a shrinkage from almost 30 to 5 (If that is indeed the case) is in any way justifiable.

Board the Platforms has nothing to do with this as it is totally hypothetical at this point. And so what if it is? They could have been able to do 500 of these minilevels in the time they've had. The games been delayed like a year, I'm sorry if I expect it to exceed the previous title in the franchise in every way. I know that's just crazy thinking!

Ummmm, they could just change the positioning of the targets on the level to tailor to a particular character.  (ie: Pikachu has a two targets atop each other that is easily hit by lightning, but that is not the orientation for a different character...)

The stage's overall layout could be pretty generic.... and each character's starting position on that stage does not have to be the same.  For example, there could be a wall jumping U in the stage and a good wall jumping character might actually start off in that U (Think young link in SSBM).  Now pikachu might not start off in that U but there might still be a target in it (which one would think is best hit with lightning).

That'd still be a considerable downgrade. Not as bad as there only being 5 different ones total, but still worse.

It's mostly a wait and see kind of thing though, thanks to the weird way SmashDojo updates are written.

I don't know why we are arguing this point.  It is unknown what was meant by the earlier quote and these 5 stages could just 5 individual stages or 5 single stages for all characters...or 5 single stages for all characters with different layouts...it doesn't matter.

However, I am kinda getting more excited about the idea of 5 single levels, and you have to learn how to use the characters to find shortcuts in each.  And although it is a down grade in a way of just 5 levels...it is an upgrade in that each character gets 3 more stages of hit the target than it had in Melee (even if they are generic.)

I was confused over how it was phrased as well though I read it as each character has 5 different maps of varying difficulty and that the backgrounds represented the different difficulty setting. Either way... I liked Break the Targets, Board the Platforms, and Race to the Finish but they weren't that important to me. They were fun distractions that I would revisit every couple months or so, but the only reason I completed them was to unlock X or Y. After that, I was too busy fiddling around with whatever I just unlocked.

Um... There was only one Break-the-Target stage for each character in SSBM.

Just thought that needed to be thrown out there.

Knew this was coming. He had 5 friggin' votes on Sakurai's list, more than any other character.

More heavies = good news, though.

But will he talk like Boss Hog, like from the cartoon?

He also plays into my theory that DK and Bowser were made larger because of the range of character sizes which needed to be encompassed this time around.

Awesome, I was worried that King Dedede would end up being an AT.

I wonder if that first scene is how he enters the stage?

EDIT: It appears that on the Japanese version of the site he gets his own "Warning! Character Approaching!" image that looks like it says something to the effect of "Dedede is Approaching!!" or "Warning Dedede is Approaching!!". Just thought you all would like to know.

You were?  He was THE most requested character in Sakurai's poll...

And starting now I'm worried they are showing off secret characters, because it seems odd for them to go from 1 starting Kirby character to 3...Dedede seems so perfect for an unlockable...

They are showing secret characters. And at this rate, a lot will be spoiled before the February release.

Maybe I should take up a media blackout on Brawl too.

Why is everyone putting so much stock in that poll? Ike, Dedede, and Diddy may have been heavily requested... but they're obvious choices. Besides, wasn't Sonic not on the list at all?

Edit: not on the list...

I was worried because I thought that Metaknight was the "villain" representing the Kirby series, although now that Dedede is in I assume that Metaknight will in fact be a "good" guy in adventure mode.

How are you so sure that they are, for a fact, showing hidden characters? Where have you gotten this information?
