Not really, since we know nothing about how the character plays (save swapping and the stamina angle). The only thing that really connects them is that they appear to be able to change playstyles mid-match with Down + B... and comparing them based on that would be like saying that Samus and DK are similar as both have "Charge" moves.

The Pokemon Trainer still manages to be an unique character:

- Pokemon Trainer is always present while the Pokemon do the fighting
- 3 characters instead of one
- Constant use of one Pokemon affects gameplay, as well as constant change of the Pokemon

By playstyle, I meant  the character's gimmick, so for Zelda/Sheik, it would be the transformation, which is kind of like what the Pokemon Trainer is doing, only the stamina stat is in play, and there are three "transformations".

Like, if you can use Squirtle to get the Smash ball and use Charizard's FSA. Speaking of those, what could they be? Hydro Pump, Solarbeam and Fire Blast seem probable.

Maybe they will give them their ultimate attacks like in the games? (Although the moves can only be trained to the fully evolved pokemon in the game).

Charizard = Blast Burn
Ivysaur = Frenzy Plant
Squirtle = Hydro Blast

So we have small pokemon, one medium pokemon and one large pokemon.  Is this a small, medium and large character in one?  Could Charizard not flinch when hit like Ike but the other two do flinch? Are we getting three different styles along with three different attacks as well?

If it was Pokémon specific, it would be neat if Squirtle evolved with his Final Smash.

I just would like to say, before a big argument breaks out that I was only saying that the Pokemon Trainer's main mechanic is a modification of the Zelda/Sheik mechanic, they are in no way going to play like each other, and the stamina addition will surely make them even more different.

Well why not move Mewtwo from playable to this new character's Final Smash? These are the starter Pokemon from Red/Green/Blue, so why not the most powerful Pokemon from those games?

So it would be kind of like Samus where after her final smash she changes to the zero suit?  That makes sense.

Because Mewtwo, as a playable character, had a lot of potential... they just need to balance him better. If we are pulling from the first generation of the game, why not have him summon the three legendary birds for his Final Smash? Either one at random or all three. Mew would also be another option, picking from the R/B/G/Y gen of legendaries.

Here's another thought: what if you actually only control the trainer in the background and do certain moves as commands and the pokemon actually attack on their own based on what commands you give them.  It would be a type of managerial style rather than direct combat.  Weird but would definitely make it different from the Zelda/Sheik mechanic of transformation.

Nah, I think the Final Smash will involve the trainer as the main source of attack in this one.  Or maybe, all three will attack at once, and he'll use a potion, too, so stamina goes to full after the attack, and about 20% damage is healed, too.

Yeah, that's my guess, the trio attacks, followed by at least a stamina refresher.

What is it that all Pokemon have?

Four Attacks, potently anyway.

since down B is being used to switch them out, maybe their most powerful move is their FSA?

It is either that or they all preform Struggle.

Actually counting Sheik and Zero Suit Samus as seperate characters makes 22 characters.  Of course since Pokemon Trainer is really three different characters for the price of one that'd make it 24 characters then.

Returning characters

Mario
Link
Kirby
Pikachu
Samus
Fox
Zelda
Sheik
Bowser
Donkey Kong
Peach
Yoshi
Caption Falcon His icons on Samurai Goro's page
Ness His icons on the Franklin Badge page

New Characters

Wario
Pit
Meta Knight
Zero Suit Samus
Ike
Pokemon Trainer (It's really just Squirtle, Ivysaur and Charizard as one character)
Solid Snake
Animal Crossing Character Animal Crossing Item and Animal Crossing Stage each with an Animal Crossing icon, which means there's a playable character from that series.

I don't doubt that Captain Falcon, Ness, Luigi and probably Jigglypuff will be back. But really, none of them have been confirmed, in the true sense, yet... also, anyone else find it interesting that it's the four original secret characters from the first game that are still "unknown"?

I wouldn't jump to that conclusion yet. If we see a new stage from an existing series added, without its own icon, then I would be willing to bet you are correct.

I don't think there HAS to be an animal crossing character. There might be more items from the series or even assist trophies, but there doesn't have to be a character.

You know, I have not even thought about that, but your right. It is odd considering that both Ness and Captain Falcon were starters in Melee. I know they will be back but it is kind of disconcerting.

The only thing suggesting that a logo equates to a character (or better yet the converse of that statement) is that Dr. Wright from Sim City 2000 has a the Smash logo as his icon.

What if one of these Pokemon were to use a pokeball? Yeah, I know that Pikachu can do it, as well as any other playable Pokemon, but would it not be a little weird for Pokemon that are already being used from a Pokeball to use one themselves to summon another Pokemon?

What if Charizard summoned himself?!? O_o

EDIT: Come to think of it, how the heck does Ivysaur use items? He doesn't have any hands!!

Heres the proof, Dr. Wright.  Since he and nobody from Sim City will be playable, he only has the Smash Bros icon next to him.  If they were going make an Animal Crossing icon for an item and stage, but not have a playable character, then why not give Dr. Wright a Sim City icon as well?  This shows that things from series that aren't playable will have the Smash Bros icon next to them while things connected to playable character will have that series icon next to it.
