World of Warcraft: Warth of the Lich King
« on: August 03, 2007, 06:26:32 AM »
So it's been confirmed that the new expansion is indeed "Wrath of the Lich King". And the new class "Death Knight" is also confirmed as well as a level raise of 10 (making it 80).

I haven't played WoW in about 2 months now, but the expansion has somewhat peeked my interest at the game once again.

All I need to hear is Pandaren as a new race and my subscription will be activated once again haha.

That isn't a rip off of Lord of the Rings or anything.

Lol. Seriously this game sounds like a parody of "Rise of the Witch King", Blizzard must be getting worried!

I'm sorta impressed that Blizzard is releasing their "big gun" expansions early. After all, they could have rested on their laurels with a couple of minor expansions like Undermine, or Gilneas, or Dalaran, or etc. but instead they really go for broke with Outland, and Northrend... and maybe Emerald Dream?

I think Emerald Dream will be the next expansion.

In a recent interview they had stated that while they had indeed been working on the Emerald Dream since the beginning of WoW that they had scraped most of it in favor of something even bigger and better (or something along those lines).

Which is kinda sad cause most of the emerald dream stuff looked so beautiful in the WoW exploration movies.

Speaking of Gilneas, apparently new models of the humanoid wolf guys (forgot their names) have appeared in the WoW data files. These have all the emotes and animations such as mounting that a normal playable class would have.

So many are speculating that this may have to do with Gilneas as it is thought that the place was over run with this werewolf like disease. Either that or it's a new horde playable race which has yet to be announced . . . which would so give me hopes for Pandaren!

I think Blizzard is worried about games like LOTR Online and other MMORPGs coming up in the near future, it would be stupid to lay back.

ARGH!!!

I'm HAPPY I quit WoW because I don't want to be there when Blizzard destroys its lore further. First they "prettify" the Draenei, then they're going to rip away Pandaren neutrality? BADHASDNAS

No but they should Pandaren = teh win.

Screw neutrality!

Also LoTR = WoW.

War Hammer = WoW.

Just different characters in a different fantasy world ripping off WoW. Can't even come up with their own UI. It's sad.

Wraith is from Scottish warth, probably originally "a guardian angel, hence a person's ghost seen -- as a warning or means of protection -- immediately before death, hence any apparition," from Old Norse vörthr, "watcher, guardian."

Except the part of WoW=LotR in story. LotR Onlines level design is based off the books (Except it is smaller in scale). Besides it isn't like WoW innovated much, in fact the whole MMORPG genre is pretty much the same besides some minor differences.  WoW was one of the first to get mostly everything right, but calling stuff a WoW clone is silly. So what if the UI is the same? There is more to games than LOTRO then the UI. WoW had a easy to use UI so why not include it?

Wait there is a one ring in World of Warcraft?

Also, WoW pretty much invented the whole quest friendly basis of MMOs that was see in LoTR and Warhammer.

So WoW invented quest friendly MMORPGs? All I know is that it had alot of grinding and so far LOTRO doesn't. Funny that you bring up the one ring, like that is the only lore in LOTR, heck most of the races are taken from LOTR! Even the title of the new expansion pack is a a poor attempt at copying the witch king. Heaven forbid that WoW may not be the be all end all of MMORPGs, there is no WAY that LOTRO or other MMORPGs can have many positive and unique elements to make them worthwhile.

I was just thinking today what I wanted to see in an MMO on my way back from an interview.  I realized that I don't like the point and click interface that much and I've only really been hooked to online text based games.  That got me thinking of the original Hero's Quest and AutoCad both have mouse and command line style input.  It is either or.  I think I really like that.

Lol I know but it has nothing to do with the lore (+1 to all stats is funny).

I never said WoW was the be all end all just that LoTR and Warhammer are pretty much WoW in a different universe.

Also you saying WoW stole from LoTRs ideas is pretty much saying every fantasy based well anything stole from LoTR.

And grinding in WoW? Only for the 40-50 range at some points the rest you can quest on through.

Must have been playing a different game then because I remember grinding like crazy in WoW, and if it wasn't that it was alot of "Kill 15 of X", LOTRO has those but it has a far better balance IMO between collection/killing and doing unique quests.

I'm getting in on this argument while the getting is good!

Both games suck cause MMORPGs need a drastic overhaul or the genre will stagnate worse than 2D fighters.

I agree the genre needs a nice change (see: shadowbane 2 please)

Oh but . . . LoTR has nothiing on Lich King lol:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uak094tunHA

Edit: and just asking, didn't LoTR have like the basis of (the online game) you "aiding" the fellowship? Like isn't that the whole "lore" of the game?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't that like, make the lore silly and non-sensical?

I'm against MMORPGs simply on the basis of the "pay-to-play" concept, which I hate. I loved Diablo II, one of my favorite games, and was very interested in World of Warcraft... until it became clear that playing online was going to cost extra.

Oh well, still very interested in Blizzard's games, and can't wait for Starcraft II.

I really dislike WoW, but only because it means the chances that Blizzard will ever do a WC4 in the future are very, very slim.

Starcraft 2 should be good, though. Really good.
