I'm pretty sure you can only use Gamecube controllers for Gamecube games on the Wii.

If you are referring to the Hori Gameboy Player Pad, I doubt you could use that either because it does not have an analog stick, and I'm pretty sure you can't set up Smash to use the D-pad.

Mr. Jack is indeed correct. The instant you select to play a Gamecube title the system essentially becomes a Gamecube and cannot recognize Wii controllers or the classic controllers.

Yeah...you can't even turn it off with the Wiimote. It transforms (see how I just included that Transformers reference) itself into a Cube the moment you click start.

is there any way to get back to the Wii menu from playing a Gamecube game without turning off the Wii?

I don't think so. If you take out the GCN disc while the game is running, it'll ask you to 'close the disc cover' or something equally nonsensical.

I was actually hoping that the last week's FirmWare update to 3.0u would have added Classic Controller and "Home" button support to the GameCube mode, but no such luck. Not that I mind using my WaveBird, but it would be nice for Wii owners who never had a GameCube but want to play some GameCube games and can't find any 'Cube controllers in stores.

Yes, eject the GameCube disk and then hit the reset button

if not on all GameCube games it should work on most

That counts as turning the system off.

If that counts, then the answer is no.
