TV remote

Before the Wii came out I seem to recall reading that the remote could be used as a TV remote as well. I never heard anything since. Can it do that, or did that go down the tubes before release?

No, before the Wii came out in Japan Nintendo released exclusively to Club Nintendo Premium Members all it is a TV remote in the form factor of a Wii remote. Click here if you want to read about it.

I just scored one of these from an eBay auction (it was bundled with a DS Download Station I wanted).  It's neat, but not very useful.

You know maybe that is what I am thinking of. But, I could swear that around the time the wii-mote was revealed I saw something that it could be used to change channels and adjust volume. I knew about the fan club give away and I thought it was separate. Either I am wrong, or this was dumped. Or perhaps the wii-mote has an untapped potential.

Well LEW the Wii remote does NOT emit IR , the black strip on the front of the Wii remote is a IR camera that which converts it to a really accurate representation of where the on screen pointer should be.

Well, if your tv or cable/satellite box is bluetooth enabled, then you may be able to find a hack to get it to work with it.  Otherwise, it's not going to happen.

I have one of these.
I agree with UncleBob: neat collector's item but not that useful.
It's for the Nintendo fanboy inside you.

Yep, if you go to the Light Bar sensitivity adjustment setting you can basically see what the IR camera is trying to rationalize as the Sensor Bar's LEDs. Too many IR sources and the Wiimote thinks that there are LEDs all over your living room.
