Disc Read Errors? On MY Wii?
« on: July 12, 2007, 09:12:33 PM »
It's more likely than you think.

I haven't played my Wii in a while, as in actually playing a disc game on it. Probably about a month or so. I went to play Wii sports today, and it said it couldn't read the disc. I swore loudly to myself, knowing what this probably meant, before ejecting the disc, checking for scratches/dust, etc. and reinserting it. Still no luck. I tried another Wii game. Same thing. Tried a Gamecube game. Same thing. Swore more loudly.

So now I'm going to call Nintendo tomorrow afternoon, see what I can do. At least I'm still under warranty. =/

Ouch that sucks...by any chance is it standing upright? I know my Wii sometimes gets read errors when its standing but never when it's flat.

Sounds like a problem, well from what I've experienced with NOA they are GREAT to work with and should get you fixed up in no time. Not sure how they will work it, but here are the options they give you.

1. Send you a new system and give you a box to return your old one in (Least likely if you have any vc games or have saves you want to keep, if you do have saves if you can try to back them up to a SD card)

2. They may ask you to send your system in so they can repair it or transfer your account to that Wii, this takes about a week (I got my DS Lite back in 4 days).

Good luck!

Yeah, I know how NOA's service is. I already had to replace my Wii once. =/ I had that bricking problem in the beginning.

It happens to me on occasions when I leave a game, go back to the Wii Menu, eject the disc then try and boot the game. It doesn't always happen but it can and it's kind of annoying.

With that said it only happens in its upright position and never when it is laid horizontally.

Same here, I have never had a read error, but with only one exception. That exception is the incompatible version of Gamecube Freeloader. I was all psyched to play some Naruto GNT4. Well, another friend had a compatible Freeloader, so we had some Naruto goodness.

My Wii froze on me just the other day after I had downloaded F-Zero X.  Blah, oh well.  All is fine it seems, though.

Pro: I lol'd.

But yeah. My Wii is just borked. Still does it when laid flat, clean discs, no scratches. I called Nintendo today, and I'm going to send it back to them for repair, just because I don't want to lose my save data. Should be back in plenty of time for me to play Mario Strikers Charged!

.... was Wii Connect 24 enabled?

I used to have that enabled on mine, but after someone warned me about it, and I hadn't played my Wii in a few weeks, I checked my console to find that it was very, very hot. Since then I have disabled it, and never plan to enable it again. Sadly, my Wii seems to dim the in-game brightness at random times now... probably once every five hours or so. Which didn't start happening until after I had left it off with Wii Connect 24 on for so long.

Dirk, do you have kids or something? i haven't heard of many wii problems, let alone two from the same person! did you try unplugging it, then plugging it back in, and changing if its verticle or horizontal? my wii has froze, but only during the winter! jk, i had to unplug a few times, but nothing of a disc error. have you dropped it?

If you had read his posts, you would have noticed that he tried many things including laying it flat and whatnot.  It's probably better that he sent it off for repair as it works great now according to him.

Hey Dirk, are you keeping the vents well ventilated?  Does the Wii have space?  I've heard stories of people packing their Wii into a tiny space and it gets damaged from too much heat.

Yeah, it's in an open area with plenty of ventilation. I'm hoping it was just a fluke.

Happens to me now and again...you can hear the disc drive going crazy and then the Wii turns off by itself.
