The State of NEBRASKA (all NE discussion goes here!)
« on: July 07, 2007, 12:44:42 PM »
Hello everyone.

As of earlier this week, my wife and I have finished our cross-country move back to my homeland: NEBRASKA. Coming from the well-known tourist destination of Monterey, California, the question on most peoples' minds is: WHY?? Well, this topic has been engineered to answer that question, and more. So, if you have any questions about Nebraska, ask here and I'll do my best to answer promptly.

Oh, and if there are no questions about Nebraska, I may just fill this thread with my own meandering thoughts on this fine state. And if you are wondering, I AM PERFECTLY CAPABLE OF SUPPLYING THESE MEANDERING THOUGHTS IN GENEROUS, EVEN OVERWHELMING, SUPPLY.

So, my first point of discussion: "Nebraska: YAY!"

Nebraska is worthy of a fully-capped "YAY" because my family is here. It is also pretty inexpensive to live here too. The people here are very friendly and down-to-earth (sometimes I talk with people on the street – "Hey, Happy 4th of July, guy I don't know!" – and also in the grocery store – "Hmm, have you ever tried pickled beets?"). I also like Nebraska  because there are four real seasons (this alone could—and may well should—be expanded into a whole topic of its own: "How the existence of four "real" seasons (winter spring summer fall) promotes awareness of one's own life cycle, thus affecting the dispositions/outlooks of people who reside in such a location as Nebraska"). Lincoln, NE, is one of my favorite towns because it's a university town which draws people from all over the world. I also like that even the big cities in NE have the small-town vibe, while retaining big-city amenities (like malls, theater, indie film venues, local music scene, cool coffee shops, authentic foreign restaurants, oh, I could go on and on).

Ok! That should do it. What do YOU think of Nebraska? Have you been to Nebraska (driving through does not count! ). Or is there anything you want to know about Nebraska? I'll help!

P.S. – If you have any negative things to say about Nebraska, you are wrong, so kindly take your ideas elsewhere

Why does all the corn in Kansas lean north?
Because Nebraska sucks

Haha just kidding, never been there but have driven past once or twice. I hear Omaha is a nice town.

I drove through Nebraska once; it was the longest eight hours of my life.  Seriously, this damn state is too long.  It's worth than driving north/south through Illinois.  However, I won a blue-assed baboon at a crane game at a Pizza Hut; so I guess the state's not all bad.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Whoa whoa whoa, take it outside there, fella. This isn't the "Midwestern States and Their Many Jokes About Each Other" thread, this is the regular ol' "State of NE" thread. Though I could name off plenty of those jokes if I were so inclined...

But you're right about Omaha being a nice town

My girlfriend is from Omaha.  I like how you have to briefly drive outside of the state to get from the airport to the city.

And it sounds like vudu needs to take a drive through west Texas - take the 20 from Ft. Worth to El Paso.  Then tell me what you think of Nebraska.

I fly to Texas, thank you very much.  I don't want to touch the ground of any part of that state that isn't Austin.

Ah, yes, it's true: Carter Lake, IA. Let me explain, Bloodworth... see, Nebraskans enjoy the act of sharing, and that extends to sharing our visitors with other states. Sometimes bizzarely-drawn state boundaries can be a positive thing.

It looks like I'll be going to Omaha, Nebraska in Aug.  Will decoyman meet me at the border with cake and pie?  Stay tuned to find out...

All you Americans with your "driving across this state sucks" talk need to drive across Canada.  There's only like six cities in the entire country with a population over a million and the physical country is bigger than the US.

4 Seasons suck, I'd rather be back in Tampa Bay, Florida where there are two seasons a year; Summer and Summer*2.

Should we make a thread for all of the states? Because OHIO also has four (4) seasons. Plus, we're the heart of America. "The Heartland" Also known as The North Coast. Or The Buckeye State. The Dog Pound is reserved for Cleveland.

YAY Ohio!

And ever since we need a passport to cross into Canada, they have been kicked out of the North America club. Same for Mexico.

I don't think you *technically* need a passport to get into Canada - I thought you just needed one to get back into the US...

IceCold....I wish I could see that.

I've never been to Vancouver, but it seems like my type of place. Jazz bars everywhere; the ability to do whatever you want pretty much whenever you want, be it snowboarding or going on a cruise; delicious smokable......plants; beer served in a bigger glass; casinos; a country where football (the real football) is played more frequently than baseball, and nature in general. I was thinking if I had to live anywhere in the world, it would be in the mountains right next to the ocean/sea. And BC pretty much fits the bill.

What other places fit the bill? Greece, I guess. Lebanon. Peru. Japan. Hawaii. Um....I'm all out.....

In any case, it's better than Oregon.

I'm leaving very soon.  It's a nine hour and one min drive (via MapQuest).  We'll probably stop a couple of times, but you'd better be ready!

Omaha ain't ready for me.
