Smash Bros. Introduces Assist Trophies
« on: July 02, 2007, 04:27:24 AM »
They're like Pokeballs, except any Nintendo character could pop out.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=13740

Besides our roundups of the Smash Bros. Dojo updates every Friday, we promised our readers that we'd write specific news articles anytime the official Smash blog announced something really big, like a new feature or a previously unknown character.

Today, the Dojo ran two updates, both about Assist Trophies.  These items seem to function the same as Pokeballs, but they contain characters from all sorts of Nintendo games.  Basically, the collectible character trophies from Melee have been worked into Brawl's gameplay.  This means that a far wider variety of Nintendo characters will make appearances during battle, although like the randomly generated Pokemon, the trophy helpers are invincible and controlled automatically.

The three Assist Trophies revealed today are Hammer Bro (throws hammers), the giant Nintendog first shown at E3 2006 (blocks most of the screen), and Samurai Goroh (runs around and swings a sword).  The blog promises that some of the trophies will be quite obscure characters, although they may be less obscure after appearing in Brawl.

This sounds perfect for an Ouendan/Elite Beat Agents appearance.

I wonder if most of the SSBM trophies could become assist trophies.

I wonder if you'll have to collect the trophies to unlock them in the game.  That'd be pretty cool in my opinion.  Gives a little more purpose to the endless trophy hunt, and could make getting those last few (which I'm sure would be uber) all the more worth it.

Fixed.

This is interesting, and frankly, I'd prefer this to Pokeballs as those are relegated to Pokemon.

Though, this kinda blurs the lines between playable characters and assist characters. I would have thought Goro would have been the next obvious addition to the roster for F-Zero so I'm guessing that this will serve as somewhat of a disappointment as more assist characters are revealed which therefore aren't playable.

I suppose this is far better than not having those characters in the game at all.

Still, I wonder if it's possible to get a playable character from one of these, so long as no one is playing as that character at the time, like DK could come out and pound the stage a bunch or something.

I like that idea, only I don't think it should matter if the character is currently being played or not. I think it would be kinda funny to watch someone playing as DK and someone else summoning DK to fight against him.

What about if assist trophies for certain characters were only unlocked when you had a save file from certain games? Much like a Pikmin save unlocked a SSBM trophy, maybe a save for Mario & Sonic go to the Olympics will unlock some Sonic side character Assist trophy items?

Why stop there, why not have downloaded VC games unlock some of the other assist trophies? That would give people another reason to buy games for the VC. Of course they shouldn't be anything that you couldn't earn eventually, but it would be a nice reward for those that have spent lots of $$$ on VC games.

You can get the Pikmin Trophy without a Pikmin save. (I did.)

Yeah.  Put them in the lottery as well.

That would be really neat, personally I think the assist trophies are a good way to go instead of cramming tons of characters in the game who are either unbalanced or clones of another character.

That would be really annoying... I don't like to have to buy even more stuff to access everything in my own game.  Oh well, at least you'd be able to get them through hacking.

You should have a chance to get all of them vy the coin slot machine.  If its like Melee they'll add in more trophies later meaning that the people who originally bought the game may need it but the ones with a later revision won't.

I have a feeling that if MS or Sony required VC purchases to unlock trophies everyone would cry foul and b!tch about microtransactions ruining gaming.  I didn't mind the Pikmin trophy in SSBM because it was one trophy.  If a whole whack of them requires me to own tons of other games I would have felt ripped off.  Plus buying Pikmin was worth it anyway.  Not only was it a great game but it was also a brand new game.  VC titles are old games.  Some people may not want to buy that many because they already own them.

Though receiving a handful of "free" trophies when you first start a game because of VC purchases sounds okay.  Like they're all just routine trophies everyone else gets but if you have VC games you get a bunch of them unlocked right away.

Yeah, that's probably a better solution.

Actually, all these unlocked things should be regular trophies. It'd sorta suck having actual ITEMS (assist trophies) being locked until you made a $50 purchase like I suggested. *sigh*
