Should someone make a 2D Platformer for Wii?
« on: June 23, 2007, 10:29:41 AM »
After seeing NSMB's great success (nearing 5 million in Japan, selling awesome-like elsewhere), and seeing the awesomeness that is Paper Mario...

Does anyone else think that a 2D-playing platformer would be a great idea on the Wii? It could, of course, do some things new to help give it shiny-ness, but it should also be relatively easy and cheap to develop, be accessible to a wide audience of both hardcore traditional and non-gaming casuals (just as NSMB on the DS is), and be a great fit for the Wii.

Also, 2D is not dead. Give it 3D graphics if you like, or give it 2D sprites, but a 2D platformer, with charm and straightforward fun, would be welcome, wouldn't ya think? (also, maybe budget priced!)

Yes, I do think they should make Super Paper Mario. You should go back in time and tell them that.

I don't want Super Paper Mario. Too much RPG fluff. I want New Super Mario Bros.

Little Big Planet, for all it's awesomeness, is a perfect example of how if they proposed Tetris today they'd need to bombard it with new and complex features. Is there no more room for straightforward and simple fun? Why did Super Paper Mario need to be an RPG?

Well, 2D games are inherently difficult to implement motion controls with. I guess you could make a platformer using the controller NES-style, but the thing is.. Nintendo is trying to make accessible games by using motion controls (see WiiSports). They already made accessible games by using a D-Pad and two buttons 20 years ago (see Super Mario Bros).

Maybe flicking the remote upwards could make Mario jump, and tilting it down would make him crouch? *shrug* Of course you don't get to use the full range of motions in a 2D game as you do in a 3D game, but I can see how it could work out. And maybe flicking to either side would make mario spit fireballs or hurl shells? Yeah, it could work.

Nintendo should label is"Super Mario Bros. 4", rather than "New Super Mario Bros. 2". I say the New franchise should stay on the DS, but the original line should stay on consoles, and it is long overdue for a sequel....

I'm sorry I don't want NSMB because I thought it was a step back for (2D portion of) the series.

Well, it was technically SUPPOSED to be a step back considering it was designed to be a modern version of Super Mario Brothers...

Nintendo could try a sequel on the Wii and it might sell much better considering the Wii is much more popular than its predecessor.

Actually it sold pretty good.  The last time I saw any sales data it was over 250,000 copies here in North America and somewhere over 160,000 copies in Japan.  I have no idea about Europe but even with America and Japan it sold over 400,000 so it's total wordwide would be something higher.  This means it's final sales are somewhere between 400,000 - 600,000 worldwide which would make Donkey Kong Jungle Beat one of the best selling 2d games from last gen.  Actually I think it was the 4th best selling 2d home console game behind only Smash Bros Melee, Paper Mario: TTYD and the first Viewtiful Joe.

So I'm sure Nintendo was quite happy with Jungle Beats total sales but since Tokyo EAD is busy with Mario Galaxy right now, we have to wait a while before any sequel comes out.

I'm not sure if Loco Roco is really considered a platformer but a similar game where you can twist the environment would work for the wii.  You could make it Mario but let you twist the world around with the remote as you jump through the level.

I read in a interview somewhere that the LocoRoco hates the motion sensing in Wii-remote and SIXAXIS, he said if he makes LocoRoco on PS3 it would use the triggers. When I read that I was shocked since loco would be the single most easiest game to implement  motion sensing.

That's ridiculous, because Loco Roco was initially planned WITH motion sensing for the PSP in mind!!!!

Of course! Capcom proved that they could do it with Viewtiful Joe on Gamecube, so I think its totally plausible/necessary.

3 reasons Nintendo shouldn't spend resources on 2D Wii Games:

1.) 2D games are already well covered on the DS. Nintendo may profit more by pumping out 3D games on the Wii instead of 2D

2.) 2D games are very well covered in 80s to mid-90s virtual console games.

3.) Motion sensing is not well precedented in 2D games and no one knows how well it could work out.

3 Reasons Nintendo Should spend resources on 2D Wii Games:

1.) 2D games are cheaper than 3D games.

2.) 2D games appeal nostalgically to Nintendo fanbois who grew up in the 80s to mid-90s.

3.) Motion sensing is not well precedented in 2D games, but Nintendo is well known for breaking new ground in video gaming innovations.

I'd think an ambitious up and coming, smaller third party developer/publisher could do it.
