Origins of your forum name?
« on: May 26, 2007, 05:00:19 PM »
Hey everybody... so, um, I've always been curious about how people choose their screen names in places like forums and all. So, this is a thread to discuss it! If you want to, you know, vanquish the fog of mystery, this is the place to do it.

So, I'll go first. Decoyman was a comic character with a big target on his chest that I used to draw in high school. He was a sort of accidental superhero, whose only power was to keep other characters (such as those from my other comics: Super Slug and Jan Snordan, the skiing Norwegian) from getting hurt. I think I dissolved him in acid, dropped anvils on him, and did all sorts of other nasty stuff to him. But since he was like made of jelly or something, he was never hurt too bad. His arch-nemesis was Dr. Fuzzball, who was evil, and had some sort of tragic past (he didn't used to be a fuzzball) that drove him to his evil ways. Their rivalry was never resolved because, well to be honest, I got too busy. But it was good (and weird) enough to be used as a screen name, and so, his odd legacy lives on to this day.

So how 'bout anybody else? I'm curious about lots of you guys, so I want to hear 'em all

If I need to explain my login name, then you haven't played enough fighting games.

Ironicly I don't play fighting games much as I use too.
I now play SF2 on the Wii, with some Guilty Gear on the side, that's about it.

ShyGuy actually started as my CB handle when I was a kid because I am antisocial. I didn't think of Super Mario 2 when I came up with it, but it may have been subconscious.

I wanted to be Smoke on XBand 'cause I liked the cybernetic ninjas in MK3 and thought Smoke was cool.  But it was taken, so the thing suggested Smoke39.

I never got to play with anyone on XBand. :/

Mine is self explanatory.

Really, I can't remember why I picked it.

The name just sort of hit me when I was outside a Taco Bell one day in High School though it started out as:

Ceric Tiegjunge von Traum

Then when I first used it in a CS match with the Comp Club I found it to be to long so it became:

Ceric

After that it actually went through an alternative because someone else in the world seems to like the name Ceric as well so for some things I'm:

CericME

Fun factoid is that the ME stand for Millenium Edition.  I'm the only one who liked the OS and had a rock solid experience with it.  The secret was to let something else do some of the memory management.

BlackNMild

Some think its because of the similarly named cigar Black and Mild's
but even though that may be partially true, I actually picked the name cause it actually describes me for the most part.
I am a black man who happens to be very mild tempered, with N being a much better and abbreviated way of saying "and", hence the BlackNMild

2k1, well thats the year I started using the name, and its also when I turned 21(I could finally be a legal alchoholic, YaY!)

UB, is Bill your uncle? Does he really go by the name Bob inreal life? Its ok, you can tell us, we're all family here.... No that doesn't mean we are all gonna touch you you too, as we can't all be your uncle. Besides he obviously called "dibs" already, and none of us would want to break that sacred rule of trust, it just wouldn't be right.

Ehh, I've used mine for email since some point in early high school.  I hated coming up with usernames, and I usually stick with this one.  I suppose I use it because I feel like I blend in a lot, unless I do something to stand out, and even then, I blend in amongst those who stand out.  It's a little off, but I like it.

My first name is Ian.  In high school my brothers and I were really into wrestling and liked to wrestle on the trampoline in our backyard.  Naturally we made up wrestling personas for ourselves and I was thinking of using a play on words that incorporated my first name.  Initially I came up with Ian Vader (invader) and Ian Credible (incredible) but thought it was too similar to the real wrestlers Vader and Justin Credible.  I was talking about it with my Dad and he suggested Ian Sane (insane).  It seems so obvious now I don't know why I didn't think of it myself.  Anyway I liked it enough to start using it as a common alias.  I was originally thinking of adapting it as my "professional name" as the guitarist for my band but then my brother joined and I figured it would be better to go by my real name to acknowledge our relation.

Coincidently my real last name starts with 'S' as well.

You pronounce Ian as "In"? or do you pronounce it as "E-an"? I though you would pronounce it as "I-an" and therefore "I-ansane" which would sound like "I am sane" or "I Insane" when said normally. But now that I think about it, I guess you pronounce it as Ean which would sound like "E-in" or "En" when said quickly. Making for En-Sane which now makes alot more sense.

I pronounce my first name "ee-en".  So "Ian Sane" is kind of like pronouncing "insane" with an extra syllable.  EE-EN-SANE

I like mantises a lot, really really a whole lot, I would even have them as pets but it sucks to see them in captivity, so I can't do it. The scientific name of the order mantidae got deformed for some reason in my head and it ended up the way it is now when I needed an account name ten years ago, when I was young and starting into this interweb thing, I don't use anything else since that time.

a couple of years ago I needed a nick to register here, and as I had just recently finished watching Gundam SEED, remembered how cool Athrun was, and voila! nick GET!

have been using it since, although since it's a pretty popular anime character availability varies, so if it's already taken, I use Atun (thanks to a friend who couldn't pronounce the nick... lots call me that now teh joys of the INTERNETZ....) or some other variant....

and just in case, Atun = Tuna in Spanish...
