Wii Brain Academy uses the Wii Console Friend Code
« on: May 24, 2007, 05:13:13 PM »
ORIGINAL POST:

Unlike Wii Sports, the title also automatically imports all the friend codes stored on your Wii console, which is an extremely positive sign step toward the eradication of individual software-based friend codes. What this means is that you won't need to re-enter any friend codes if you've already added your friend's Wii system number to your console.

Huzzah? Seems like Nintneod hasn't made up their mind! ARGH! Both this and Elebits use the console's unified friend code, while Strikers will require a seperate individual friendcode different from the console one. Any guesses as to why?

AHAH! NEW INFO??!?!?!?!?

Apparently, Mario Strikers Charged and all future online games will/can use CONSISTENT friend codes that are attached to MIIS, instead of being attached to games or consoles?!?!?

Quote

Translated from French:

G:
And the Mii code, how's that work?
NLG:
Each Mii generates a Mii code that remains constant. This code will be used for all online titles in the future.

If so that seems a splendid compromise, and a way to get a friend's code, and only have to enter it once for all the games you wish to play together!!! (of course, this also means that Nintendo will have bumbled through a total of THREE different Wii online console-to-console pass systems) Hopefully this means that Nintendo will be able to have a standardized online system up, and that third parties can start adding online play to their titles as early as... this fall? (Oh let a fanboi dream won'cha?)

I just spoke to Justin Dowdeswell on the phone and he clarified that his comments about Mii-specific codes related only to his game. He said that he never intended to comment on any other titles, nor would he know about how they implemented online features.

My guess is that Nintneod deemed Friend Codes "safer" even if the alternative makes far more sense. I always figured that the Wii Console Number could be used, but Nintendo couldn't decide if they should use it or rely on Friend Codes again.

Sorry.

I'm personally guessing that Nintendo deems the Console code safe if people are exchanging benign scores or levels they made... but that if they're actually going to PLAY together, they might have to jump through that specific friend code layer of security?

The point isn't that its only for an online leader board.

The point is that its possible.  The technology is there not to force us to imput friend codes in all the time.

We should bombard Nintendo with requests to change the friend code system.  I think a simple compromise would be for Nintendo to do a system upgrade that would allow parents with the parental code to select if they want games to force input of friend codes, or if it will input our list from our Wii friend list.

E3 is coming up soon, and if we can ask the reporters from our favorite game sites to all tell Reggie and everyone they interview our feelings on this perhaps we will get a change.

I think Strikers went with unique friend codes because not all your Wii friends have the game.

IDK, just a guess.

Requim:  That doesn't make sense, because not everyone would have Elebits or Big Brain Academy.

It would not be a hassle for the game to input the Wii console friend codes, and if they don't have the game allow the user to delete them.

Personally, I would love a system that brings up an import menu that you can check list the Wii friends you want to import into a game.

Maybe " hardcore"  games will use the individual friend codes while simple, casual games like Big Brain Academy will use the console's friend code?

The question for Nintendo now...

Seriously, they need to get their sh*t together on this one.

True.  There really is no excuse not to give us gamers a choice.  Nintendo we understand your desire and goodwill in creating the system you have...but it sucks, and prevents gamers from easily enjoying online play.

Well Requiem I have read somewhere on the internet that it said in the European Strikers manual that users will experience high lag if playing a player not from Europe or UK. If I recall correctly Europe is getting its own server for the game so my assumption is that the game has regional servers, so I'll go out on a limb and say that the only reason this game has its own friend code is that because the game doesn't have a global unified server for this game except regional servers.

Interesting. I hope it's true. It really seems too obvious to have not been implemented already.

I have the game, and i can confirm that there is friend codes that are on top (or aside, how you look at it!) of the Wii system code and different miis are assigned different friend codes.

So can you.. just use the Mii friend code and not the game friend code?

Guys, we're misinterpreting this. A friend code attached to a Mii is still a friend code, and it's only attached to the Mii in that specific game. What he's saying is that multiple people can play on the same Wii, and have multiple "accounts" through use of Miis.

I'll test 2x2 and 2x1 with friends later and see how it goes. When you play for the first time it sets up WFC data and saves it to the console (which cant be ported or moved to the SD card) so it is most likely a universal friend code attached to a mii.

I checked and each different mii gets a different friend code.

So when is this update which uses Mii friend codes coming?

This sounds too good to be true. Are we sure the guy wasn't suggesting that using Miis as gamer accounts would make more sense than the current system?

After all, the current friend code system doesn't take into account the fact that the Wii is a family console and as such older gamers can swap friend codes and then a younger gamer could be lured away by some pedo when little Billy logs in and starts talking to people he doesn't know but recognize that the person talking is clearly young enough to be impressionable.

We should've all expected that and I think, deep down, we all did anyway. Nintendo has to fail miserably in order to change so really, if we want Friend Codes to change, we'd all need to boycott it which likely would never happen. Nintendo said free, dammit, and I don't know about you guys but I'll take almost anything that's free.
