Nintendo vs. Sony: Final Fantasy
« on: May 22, 2007, 09:24:33 AM »
The "Final Fantasy" series have been split through the middle with Nintendo and Sony...
...Square Soft (current Square Enix) created the series, and Sony is more up-to-date; however, Nintendo helped Square Soft develope, fund, and sell/suply the beginning of the series.
Who should own copyright to the name?

Well, of course it would go to Square Enix; but who actually began the "Final Fantasy" series?
...Or, who boosted Square Enix' productions of Final Fantasy; what company grew it to be able to be so popular?

I thought it would be Nintendo...
...Sony and Nintendo should stop making remakes of these games...
...however, I think Sony should not make remakes of games Nintendo has made!

Neither Sony nor Nintendo has jack s### to do with Final Fantasy. The only company responsible for it is Square and now Square-Enix. Sony or Nintendo deserve no credit for the archievements of a third party.

Neither Nintendo nor Sony made the Final Fantasy games so how can they own the copyrights to it?  I mean, if a movie company releases a movie that plays on your dvd player does that mean the company that makes the DVD player owns the copyright to it? Does Microsoft own the copyrights to Itunes or Firefox if it runs on their Operating System? Does a company that makes paper own the copyrights to books printed on their product? Geez, give me a break.

I think the only Square-Enix games Nintendo has any copyrights on are the ones they co-produced, which would be Super Mario RPG and perhaps Crystal Chronicles and some others... Anyway, speaking of which, the two companies need to team up again to make Super Mario RPG 2.

Well, Sony and Nintendo both boosted the series at one time or another - Square's NES games never even would have appeared in North America if it weren't for Nintendo - but KDR is basically right, Square deserves 95% of the credit.

Determining which half of the series is more important is also hard.  Most people here will pick the first half, being Nintendo fans and prefering gameplay over movies.  I think the sales numbers support the second half, though, especially Final Fantasy VII.

I'd kind of like to see a Super Mario RPG 2 as well.  I used to shoot that request down because I'm perfectly happy with Nintendo's Mario RPGs, but with Paper Mario and Mario and Luigi reaching five games in total, it could be an interesting change of pace.
That's my opinion, not yours.

I'll admit that I haven't played the Paper Mario games yet (I will eventually), but I really love the Mario and Luigi series, especially the first one. However, they don't seem as good to me as Super Mario RPG for SNES did. They didn't have as good of a story or as interesting characters I thought, plus the DS one was disappointingly short and just seemed rushed compared to the first one.

Nintendo is good at many things, but I think in the RPG genre Square-Enix is the king and they both should be working together to make the best Mario RPG games.

It was such a shame they split... If the N64 had been CD based it probably would never have happened and video game history would be very different today. I bet EVERY FF game would have been exclusively on Nintendo systems if that had been the case.

No one would, Square would be bankrupt.  Final Fantasy was to be Squares's last hurrah in the gaming sector.  It sold well enough to save their company, hence they decided to turn it into a franchise.

Would this mean we'd have to give Crash Bandicoot back? And Guitar Hero? And DDR? And RE?

I think things are pretty okay the way they're turning out you know...

Square just stayed were the money was, with the mistake of supporting wonderswan

But I do think nintendo did alot more then sony, since it localized the games and published them in the west

All sony did was give them lots of money to stay exclusive and buy stock

Did you know that in Japan, Rad Racer released as Highway Star?

I guess Rad Racer does sound like a not-first-choice name...

Depends on the market situation. If MS took 80% of the market FF would've been on the XBox.
