Rygar on Wii
« on: May 11, 2007, 03:35:38 AM »
Tecmo is bringing the love...

DS got the return of Ninja Gaiden...

and the Wii is getting Rygar.  The character art looks beautiful though.  Rygar was one of my favorite games growing up.  It was my Strider before Strider came out.

taken from ign-wii:

"Based on the classic NES/Arcade game (which also made a glorious stop on PS2), this game starts the franchise anew with new characters and settings. Kikuchi wants to make a game that people can easily get into through the Wiimote, and the Wiimote will be your main control device for Rygar's Diskarmor. He hopes to be able to show more of Rygar some time this year."

Yes, more third party announcements to get excited about.

I liked the Rygar games, but I'm glad that Tecmo is going to try and take it in a different direction, as Rygar's place is currently held by God of War. Sure, GoW ripped off just about all its concepts from Rygar--right down to the "bladed weapon attached to chain" shtick, but it did so superbly, so I think it's smart that they aren't going to try to take it on directly and are instead trying a different approach.

Actually, now that I think about it...I wonder just HOW they're going to make a Rygar game without it being too much like God of War, the games are so similar in concept (well, other than the Rygar = good guy, Kratos = not-so-good guy). Oh well, I'm still really excited. The idea of controlling the diskarmor with the wiimote is actually....well, pretty awesome. The two actually could go very well together. The wiimote can handle throwing motions pretty accurately, and since the diskarmor is, well, a disk...the collision problems that would plague sword-play with the wiimote most likely wouldn't factor in as much.

rygar wii will live or die on the wiimote controls.
I found the early level designs and boss battle in rygar- especially the catacombs to be dreadful. Good to see games built from the ground up for wii.

I don't know. I wouldn't call God of War a rip-off of Rygar. That's almost like saying Zelda is a rip-off of Adventure (Atari 2600).

Still, if God of War borrowed from the old Rygar games, maybe this new Rygar should borrow from God of War, because the PS2 version of Rygar, despite fairly good reviews, sucked while God of War was awesome. God of War is a perfect game to draw influences from.

And this is just personal preference, but I hope new Rygar doesn't bastardize Greek and Roman mythology as badly this time. For comparison's sake, God of War changed Greek mythology yet stayed fairly accurate and it worked. Rygar, on the other hand, had Icarus as a Titan for example. Again, personal preference. I just thought the story was generally poor in Rygar and taking so many liberties made it worse. On the other hand, Valkyrie Profile wrecked Norse mythology, but I liked the storyline. I guess it just comes down to execution and quality of writing.

But hey, this is great news. Wii is finally getting exclusives, which is better than ports or no exclusives at all. Like Soul Calibur Legends, I'll be looking out for this one.

That's basically what I was getting at. God of War didn't rip off the entirety of the Rygar series, but it basically took everything the PS2 version of Rygar tried to do before it and did it....well, right.

God of War had a whole heap of PS2 action games to build off of.  The objective was to avoid all their mistakes.

Rygar Arcade looks better than Rygar PS2.

For some reason back in the day I remember Rygar nes being compared to Ninja Gaiden and people were supported on or the other.

This is a little off-topic, but after looking at a close-up of the art, I hate that crustache Rygar has. I thought only guys on the Style network had facial hair like that.

Rygar is a great NES game.

I hope Tecmo's Wii incarnation of Rygar kicks ass and takes names.

I never thought I'd hear God of War comparisons to the PS2 version of the game.  I hope they put some time to develop a storyline for the game.  I'm not expecting Silicon Knights territory with the story development, but a nice solid one...comparable to Metal Gear.

They bothered, but not much.

Disappointment for fanbois? Is this just a wiimake?

Project Rygar is, according to the latest issue of Famitsu, just an updated version of the PlayStation 2 Rygar game.

Of course, Tecmo is adding some updates to the game.

Booo thank you for spoiling everything! Well maybe it will be polished up and have great Wiimote controls to where it seems fresh again. I'd love to see Rygar get another chance, the series is great (well except for the arcade one which I found to be terrible).

What the hell is the point of that? I can see using the franchise, but why remake a game that wasn't that popularor even good? That's seriously like if Nintendo remade Yoshi's Safari.
