Hanging Wiis
« on: May 07, 2007, 05:57:07 AM »
So, something has been bothering me for a while and I wanted to hear if everyone is having the same problem or not.  For a while I've just been assuming it's a global issue that would eventually be fixed in an update, but now I'm not so sure.

Basically, the first thing I do on my Wii when I turn it on, regardless of what it is, hangs on a black screen for upwards of 3-5 minutes before actually loading.  Memory management, virtual console game, everybody votes channel, an actual wii game... it's all the same.  After I sit through the one long black screen, everything will load almost instantly from that point on.

It's very strange.  It's like the Wii is taking a deep breath before it actually starts doing anything.  Does everyone experience something similar?  Do you think I'm crazy.

I do have WiiConnect24 on all the time.  I'm not sure if that matters.

I've had that happen maybe a half-dozen times since launch...Kinda odd that you get it so frequently...

I get it about once a week.  I think it has to do with resetting the system and probably the type of storage memory the Wii uses.

I still expect a really good Wii System upgrade that will fix many of the complaints we have about the Wii.

I am so hopefully of this I am still holding my breath that Nintendo will figure a way to make Virtual Console Controllers compatible with Game Cube games.  (It is the reason I haven't bought new Game Cube Controllers.)

I have had this happen a few times, I don't believe I have seen it since the browser update.

Hmm.. do you guys use SD cards?  I wonder if the Wii does something to 'initialize' the SD card every time and that what takes time.... cause I have one in there all the time.

Happens to me and my best friend, too.

We've both noticed that it only happens when you first boot the Wii after it hasn't been turned on for 2 days or longer and only affects the Wii Shop Channel, Mii Channel and the initial loading sequence of disc-based games. It never hangs for me if I use my Wii daily.

I get a little delay at the start but what really gets me is a get a pretty long black screen when I start a channel.  I don't really understand this.  Shouldn't it bring up the splash screen and then load things...

I get that once in a while, usually when loading up a new game.

I have an SD Card in my Wii all the time, and I would say it happens to me more often then the other people reporting it here.

So perhaps that could be a reason.

I've never had that issue, and I have an sd card I leave in the wii all the time, as well as the connect24 set to on.

I have an SD card, and my Wii is also set to connect24. BTW, shouldn't this be in the technical discussion forum?

You know I stopped keeping Connect24 on all the time, because I didn't like how hot my system got on standby mode.  Until there is a real definitive use for that service I am leaving it off...because as of now it doesn't automatically update, or anything...it just sends me messages to go and get that update.

I can find when new updates are available online...and not risk overheating my Wii.

Yeah, My Wii gets hotter in standby then it would when playing Sonic or most other games.  I have another fan in the stand I could leave on but that would annoy the Chinchillas at night.

This used to happen to me quite frequently.  It once took ten minutes to load up Super Mario Bros.  I turned off WiiConnect24 and I haven't really experienced the problem since.

I've encountered it about twice.  Both times, it was during a session after having the machine completely turned off for several days (red-light or zero power).

Mii Channel would take forever to start.

Seems like it was re-testing its interweb connection.

I haven't seen it last near 3-5 minutes, but I have noticed a bit of a load time between choosing channels.  Closer to 30 seconds to me.

Is that all there is to it, and it happens any time you load any channel, basically?

In that case, I've never heard that complaint except for in this thread.  I'd email Nintendo, and see if they have anything to say about it.

Happens to me quite a bit. WiiConnect24 has always been on, but I've only had an SD card for a couple months. I haven't noticed a difference in how long the wait is based on SD card usage (then again, I haven't played the Wii much lately -- still need to get Super Paper Mario).

I really hope they fix it. I have had 5-minute delays. They're not fun.
Thanks for listening.

I have an SD card and WiiConnect24 on, but it's only happened once to me - took a minute to load Gunstar Heroes.

The 3-5 minutes thing is not an exaggeration.  I literally load up the game I want to play, switch back and watch tv for a bit, then go back to the Wii.

I do often go a couple days without turning it on.  I wonder if that is in fact the problem.  I'll try and do more experiments.

I go several days without turning mine on, and I still haven't run into it.  Pale (and others), do you mind if I email Nintendo about this and cite this thread?  I'd really like to get to the bottom of this to fix all of your Wii's, and to keep this from happening to mine.  Maybe they've seen it before, and already diagnosed the problem and found a solution.  Is everyone ok with that?

Ok, I submitted an email to their online troubleshooting thing.  It said:

I recently was notified of an issue with the Wii when selecting various channels or the operation menu.  Essentially, the Wii displays a black screen on the television from about three to five minutes before accessing the option the user selecting.  Though I am not personally experiencing the problem, there were quite a few forum members that are, and in order to protect my Wii, and help fix theirs, I volunteered to email your tech support about the issue.

From what I understand, there does not seem to be any common ground between people who have experienced or are experiencing this problem.  Some of them use an SD memory card, some of them are accessing Virtual Console games.  Some people experienced it every time the try to do anything at all.  Not everyone who has reported experiencing the problem has regularly performed all system updates, but others have completed all available updates.  Not everyone has Wii Connect 24 active either.

The thread of the forum where this is discussed can be found at:
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/messageview.cfm?catid=9&threadid=20706
If there is a way to prevent or fix this problem, please let me know, and I shall let the other forum members know as well.

Thank you,
[My name here]
