Mario Party 8 delayed till Summer? Interesting...
« on: March 12, 2007, 04:11:54 PM »
...a game that was damn near ready to ship has been delayed until a little after the 1st online Wii game is released. Kind of reminds me of a similar situation on the DS, with Metroid Prime Hunters. Draw your own conclusions, I've already drawn mine.

You are a tad late. The game has been announced for a May 29th release.

I doubt they were able to add a fully working online mode in just 3 months...Unless they were working with online since the beginning of the development and have been quiet about it.

Just don't get your hopes up. Chances are MP 8 will not have online.

Mario Party just isn't the kind of game that works online.  All of the fun of the series is derived from joking and laughing with friends.  Besides, there'd be no ass-kicking of friends after I win every game!

I really hope something great is added, because I've been really anticipating the game! The Mario Party series has always been fun with family and I have no doubt this version will be alot of fun utilizing the Wiimote! So boooo on Nintendo.

Mario Party needs to be online people.  Any multiplayer game needs to be online.  If you don't think it would be fun playing online....then don't play it online, simple as that.  This whole, "it wouldn't be great for online" is the stupidest thing i've heard.  It would enable someone who wants to play online to be able to hook up with someone else that wants to play online.

Really?....do you want to decide what games you want to play online or do you want someone else to decide for you.

Yeah.  I was hoping Mario Party was adding online too, but it doesn't look to be the case.  Battle Revolution is still being advertised as the first online Wii game and that doesn't come out until June 25th.

Unless of course Mario Party 8 will be the first game to make use of the Wii24Connect service to implement online features.

Hmm, I never read it was officially set for May, I read it would be out by the end of August....guess I read the wrong information. It could also be possible they're implementing online into the game, but you won't be able to play online until after Pokemon is released.

LOL, I think this should teach people not to rely on GameStop's release dates.  A lot of people thought that Mario Party was delayed at the last second because GameStop didn't update their database when Nintendo announced the delay.   In fact, I think they waited until the false release date passed before they bothered to change it.

I don't know where anyone said August, but Nintendo announced that it will come out on May 29th last week.  As for online, you can just wait until Mario Party 9 hits next spring. (c'mon you know it will)

I completely agree, and not just on this game, but any other case where people feel they have the prerogative to decide how other people should play games - like when people say Link shouldn't talk.  Then turn off voice acting when they implement it!  I wanna hear some goddamn dialogue!

Ugh, you do realize that if Link spoke and there was the option to turn off the dialogue, WE'D STILL SEE THE TEXT, RIGHT?  Link will NEVER speak, and that's a pure stylistic choice on the part of the developer...

even so, adding online to Mario Party is PERFECT and NEEDS to happen. Just cuz it goes online doenst mean you can't play it offline. I won't get my hopes up because Nintendo seams to like me as ar as online games go.

I don't see why Nintendo wouldn't add online to this. It wouldn't detract at all from the offline mode, so people could still play with friends.

Besides, Nintendo is notorious for their long development times and delays. Considering that, you would think they'd be gung-ho for adding online to their titles, you know added longevity and all that.

Though, I'm still not getting my hopes up.

Is this hypothetical online with or without voice chat?

Cuz playing Mario Party without the excited voices of others is just a one-person show in what is a fairly slow game; in other words, sad.

And my money's still on this game not being online. I haven't heard any truth to this rumour, and I think Nintendo would be advertising this as the first real online game if they were actually putting online into it.

But everyone besides Link could speak.  Of course that raises issues of how weird it may sound when a discussion occurs and he just sits there saying nothing.  Whatev.

You forget that Link = the Player, so you should be the one talking to your TV when conversing with other characters.

If you're not going to talk, then Link shouldn't talk, since Link's a push-over YES-MAN of a hero who gets told to do everthing without thinking for himself (or is it yourself?).  "link let's do this" "link what's that over there" "link we've got to save her" "link please help me solve my problems" "link i'm dying and you're they're only hope"

you're not going to get Link to say "you know what, i'm going to the pub to get drunk off my ass and sleep in a pile of peanuts and hylian beer vomit.  find a real hero cuz everyone expects me to do something and hardly cares about what I think (cuz i don't think, that's the player's job, and i shouldn't speak, cuz if i speak it should be what i'm thinking and therefore should be what the player's thinking, but it's too difficult to make Link say what the player will say cuz the Wii is too underpowered to make such a gameplay gimmick a reality) until i kick the final bosses' ass then people realize there's no more danger and finally ask me 'R U ok? i'm sorry i lead you on a 30 hour adventure with no thanks.'  If you'll excuse me, i'm going to kidnap Agitha and lock her in my treehouse basement."

dammit Pro you beat me to it, I just read the thread and was about to respond the exact point.  Hello think about it Link always starts out as a normal run of the mill kinda guy (you) and everything makes sense that they want you to feel like you are Link, or atleast you can relate to him.

If you want something like Mass Effect be my guest, but I think Zelda games have their thing down and if they were to add anything I'd only want the other characters to actually say stuff, then again I feel spoken lines in games seem to slow down gameplay more than text.

As for Mario Party I can't wait for it and don't really care about online one way or the other, I could take it or leave it.  I mean I can see the positive of being able to play online against random ppl when nobody is around, but at the same time I think playing it online would take too long and doesn't add anything really different to the overall game.

Yeah, imagine Mario Party 8 and playing online with say, ME, and i decide to be an asshat and DO ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WHILE IT'S MY TURN for at least 10 minutes.  You'd want to kick my ass or deactivate my controller or something, but you can't cuz we're online.  And someone will have to close/restart the current game to get everything moving again.

I think not having Link speak so that the character can "relate to him"  is a piss-poor excuse. That's like saying it's easier to "relate" to those da*n "Choose Your Own Adventure!"  Goosebumps novels better than classic, well-written literature.

Obviously, I'm in the "Link needs to start speaking" camp, or the "Zelda games need voice acting for the other characters, at least" camp. If it was handled well, with believable dialogue, it wouldn't detract from Link's appeal at all. I mean, because though he may not be speaking we all know what his voice sounds like. And how many of you are really "relating" to a mute guy with long blond hair, pointy ears and tights who must save a world full of other elf-like people, humans, and alien-like creatures by collecting items from a bunch of random temples? As a black guy from Los Angeles I know I'm not "relating" to him: I'm just controlling a character (in 3rd person, no less) that develops in every other way that establishes him as an individual character BUT speaking. I would be relating to him more if he were a more complete character, that did speak, who made me relate to him through the value of his own opinions and voice.

Pro:
Obviously, Mario Party would have to have a different mode for online. Something similar to the rapid back-to-back format of WarioWare. If they did that, Mario Party would work pretty well online.
