I don't really get why nintendo's hands were tied at GDC because of the stock sale. What's the problem??
It's called front running.

Let's say Nintendo itself, or an executive, wants to sell some stock. In either case, you would want to sell your stock for as high a price as possible. So Nintendo or the executive in order to manipulate the stock price, could just say some really rosey stuff or release really rosey information so that people will buy more stock and raise the price. Then sell their stock after words. Of course, this wouldn't be announced ahead of time, so it would appear to a lay person to just be a good time to sell.

But, even though this situation is announced, there is the chance for insider information or manipulation. So until the deal is settled Nintendo has to be mum, otherwise they could be aleged in a stock manipulation scam.

Close enough to see Nintendo’s resident BMOC, Reggie Fils-Aime at the front of the crowd, working it with his trademark smile and good will. He poses for pictures, he signs Wiimotes, he presses the flesh with a good natured ease that would make even the most seasoned politician weep with envy.

“Kick his ass and take his name!” someone shouted from a few rows behind me.

“Who?” answered Reggie in mid-autograph.

“Phil Harrison, front row!” Sure enough, there was Phil Harrison, seated dead center, front row. Looks like he could show up on time for Nintendo’s keynote, but not Sony’s.

With a grin and a chuckle, Reggie replies, “Some would say we’ve already done that.”

Touchdown. The crowd goes wild.

Oh yes, let us circumvent the law for the fanboys. Forget the fact that we'll post videos on the intertubes as soon as possible, its just that government law dictated that we're not allowed to talk out of our arse for this period of time.

Oh please.

Here's my issue with that. If Miyamoto hadn't announced/shown ANYTHING, I wouldn't have thought they were stretching the excuse. But that's not the case. There was a new Galaxy trailer shown as well as a new channel announced. If it were entirely true that Nintendo couldn't, by law, announce anything due to their stock trade, why were they allowed to announce the little that they did? The fact that there was a new Galaxy trailer shown tells me that they were probably allowed to talk about projects that the public by and large already knew about, or announcements that were very minor (Mii Popularity channel). And if that's the case, where was Brawl footage? Metroid? Mario Party? Disaster? There were a ton of things that Nintendo could have introduced at the conference that would have made the crowd and press go absolutely bonkers without having to reveal new projects.

Now, if there was some sort of compromise with the Japanese government allowing them to show the little they did, that's one thing. But there's no confirmation this way or that way.

Geez, you expect Nintendo release tons of info like that?  Where've you been the past 10 years?

It's a conference for game developers, not retailers and swag-hunting-fake-press, and always has been.  It's not the old media extravaganza that E3 was.  Tho it's understandable that companies strut their stuff this time around considering THEY MISERABLY FAILED AT THE LAST E3.  Who are they trying to show off to ("hey, look at OUR game stuff")?  The people who make games, or the people they want buying their games?

Sony had new things to show?  That's perfectly digestable.  I just demote it to "big whoop" status since these exciting developments seem to be, oh, 10 months late?

What did Nintendo do last GDC?  -- I don't remember, so it must not have been much.  What happened in GDC 2005?  -- Just another beta version of Twilight Princess, that's all.  And at the same time, I guess Sony and MS were using their usual hype tricks and promises, which gets them justified attention, as usual.  But that didn't help them a whole lot in the immediate months following, did it?

"Of course, we already knew not to expect too much, but this was still a huge letdown"

They "knew" not to expect too much.  Geez, these guys fail at NOT EXPECTING.  It's their fault for expecting.

Maybe press should be barred from GDC events.  They don't make games, they don't share development experience, they just report and playtest.

I'm curious if there's individually more press than developers in each of these events.  If a dev/pub decides to have separate press events outside the festivities, then that's fine, cuz it's not GDC.

It wasn't really much of a slam... If Reggie had responded with "Oh, him?  Don't mind him, He's just here to figure out what Sony's next big project is going to be." then *that* would have been a slam.
Just some random guy on the internet who has a different opinion of games than you.

It was a nice joke on Reggie's part, but it didn't reflect the realities of the GDC, where Sony--unfortunately--shined the brightest.

He was talking about Wii vs the PS3 sales worldwide, not the gdc event itself.  That is fairly obvious.

Calm down. While its true you have to limit what you are saying during a stock sale or stock buyback, you don't have to be a fuçking hermit and completely seclude yourself. You're generally allowed to talk about products already announced or on the market. Even make small new announcements, like a new Mii Channel.

A lot of stuff falls into grey areas, so if you're unsure it's best not to talk. But generally, no forward looking statements, no major product announcements, and no large amounts of self-hyping.

The rest, talking about Brawl, Metroid, Disaster, Mario Party, whatever, well that's up to Nintendo. If Nintendo doesn't want to talk they don't have to. And, historically, won't until they are ready. Besides, part of being the humble and dignified company you want Nintendo to be is allowing your opponent his moment of glory, if he bests you.
