Let's mock the staff!
« on: March 08, 2007, 01:26:18 AM »
I know we've done this before, but I want to take a moment to pick on the staff once again for the "The Wii will be easy to get" blunder.

Today's quote comes from Pale:

I guarantee that if you show up at a Wal-Mart around 7pm, you will get a system.  I did that for GameCube (which did have a lot of hype back in the day) and was 13th in line.  The Wal-Mart I went on to got 75 units in and people that walked in at midnight still got one.  I hear they actually sold out around 1am.

Nintendo is shipping significantly more Wiis than they did GameCubes.  Hell, worst case scenario is you don't get one at wal mart, so go get in line the next morning at circuit city, best buy, or toys r us.  They won't be pre ordering either.

The only reason I can see for pre ordering is so you don't have to camp out.  If you have to camp out for a pre order, its' just stupid.

This is extra funny because we're almost four months away from launch and I still get customers who call almost *everyday* to see if we got any Wiis in on the truck.

Hey, I was mocking the staff way before it became cool!

But yeah, I still want to visit the dimension they visited where the Wii was hot AND was easy to find...

I spent my launch sitting inside a warm Wal-Mart on a beanbag chair, playing FF3 DS, talking with fellow Nintendo fans and chatting up MILFs about what kind of accessories they'd need to buy in addition to the Wiis themselves. I got there 8 hours early, though.

After getting the Wii, I went home and played Redsteel with my teenage friend, Devin, until 6 AM or so. I still remember the ear to ear grin that crossed my face the first time I beat a guy in a swordfight.

That was also the same night one of my roommates came home so drunk off his ass that he collapsed in the bathroom and I hoisted him on my back and carried him to his room. I can lift 175 lbs. without much issue, but it's so much more awkward to move a human where the weight is all over the place. Sam Fisher makes that sh*t look deceptively easy.

I had a 2nd Wii reserved at Gamestop which I sold to my brother. On Dec. 21st, I got lucky and called a Wal-Mart around noon which had 4 Wiis fresh off the truck, flew down and got one for my GF. Cap didn't make it there in time to get one for his sister, sadly.

On Jan 21st, I lined up outside Bestbuy in sub-freezing temperatures with Cap and my teenage friend (both of whom I had given $$$ beforehand) and we scored three Wiis. One went to Pap, the other to a coworker who had wanted one since he tried mine at our company Christmas party and the last one was bought by Devin.

That's a total of 6 Wii's I've personally purchased, and every single time I've basically fought tooth and nail to get one, even into January.

I'm sure the NWR staff realizes their error, but I'm not mad at them or anything (I would have been if I listened to them about the Wii situation, though...).

I resigned from the podcast because of the error, so don't think it went unnoticed in our ranks. We feel bad, but it should be noted that Nintendo underdelivered. Even so, it was a hot item that flew off shelves. I almost didn't get one.

Edit: the comment about resigning from the podcast was a joke, but upon re-reading it wasn't very funny. As a countermeasure to making me look dumb, here's a link to my blog!

Is that the reason you haven't done a podcast in a while?  That's a stupid reason.  If someone has to pay, fire Karl.

I miss the talks of Super Paper Mario.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Yeah, that is a pretty dumb reason.

For as much as I championed preordering, I even admitted that I didn't expect Wii sales to be this incredible.

If people would quit because they were proven wrong about something, then half the industry would quit because MANY predicted the Wii would fail because the name is stupid as hell. S_B, myself, capamerica and MANY others would have to disappear since we all dismissed the name as being a potential killer.

I thought the joke evolved into adding the name Wii into everything, like Wiimote, Wiiner, Wii are happy, oh wiily?/Ya wiily, Wiimake and such.

After what happened with the lady, though, I doubt anyone would dare to turn a Wii joke into a LITERAL joke...

Look at what this idiot said:

Quote

This is silliness. I think I may stop at an EBGames tonight just for LOLs. But I have to agree with Pale: I had absolutely no problem getting my GameCube at Wal-Mart, in fact both Xbox and GameCube were available at my local Toys R Us almost straight through the 2001 holiday season.
.

I changed my mind when I saw the lineups on Saturday night.  I still could have shown up at opening time and got one, but I'm glad I lined up, because I got four controllers on day 1.
That's my opinion, not yours.

Just a kindly bump since I bump old posts and since I got four different phone calls today asking if we had Wiis in and, of course, we don't.

Seriously, I wonder if Wii could have outsold the XBox 360 by now if Nintendo could make more...
