More co-op!
« on: March 01, 2007, 09:38:21 PM »
Recently I have seen a lot of people bring up old co-op games as some of their favorites that they want on the vc and I realized that they don't make nearly enough of these types of games.

In the past 2d systems it seems like co-op was the main form of multiplayer in games.  Whenever I played games with a friend rarely would we play a competitive multiplayer game.  In the switch to 3d and especially the growing popularity of fps the multiplayer focus switched a lot to competitive games.  At first I think power was a big problem when the system dealt with two 3d main characters but now it seems to be gone.

Recently co-op seems to be on the rise with the popularity of Halo and the more recent xbox games that support it.  My problem with this is that while I really enjoyed co-op Halo they seem to stuck in the same fps genre.  What happened to good old two people on one screen?  I don't want to be forced to split up the already small screen or be forced to only play it online.  This is probably the reason why I loved the games Cannon Spike and Hunter the Reckoning.  Hunter, especially, was nothing fantastic but when its the only game on the block I'll take it.

I think we started to see a huge decline in co-op when games like Quake 3 and Counter-Strike came out, and did really well. Sadly, there has been a lack of co-op in many games, and I really do sit there and ask myself why they don't put this option for multiplayer more often. I do, however, notice a huge incline in upcoming games that are noted to have this option. I think we are going to start noticing a lot more games in the near future that deal more on this aspect, than some sort of deathmatch. A lot of companies wanted to go with having a "team against team" type of multiplayer in the past few years, and have been to worried about making it new and fresh.. Like making new styles, examples like Capture the Flag and King of the Hill. It's always nice to see they add on and create new styles, but I think it has been a shame they left the 2-4 player co-op out lately.

Back then coop was more common because lots of games were based on arcade games and arcade games had coop so they could eat 2-4 coins at once instead of having to give each player his own playtime. Nowadays games aren't just not balanced for more than one player, they often rely on heavily scripted scenes that might not work with two players.

I am the man who is, self-declaredly, on a quest to find the ultimate co-op game.

I did like Hunter, but it was a bit lacking because it was too similar to Gauntlet in the "mow down all the enemies you can" factor. I think the ultimate co-op game would be one where players solve puzzles together.

Have you checked out the Splinter Cell co-op?  I've heard pretty good things about it.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Yeah, I liked it, but it's only two player and the puzzles tended to be pretty basic.

Still, a good effort.

what about Castlevania Portrait of Ruin? Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles? Zelda Four Swords?  I would have also said Elebits since it uses one screen but its competitive not co-op.  Personally I liked Perfect Dark (N64), the co-op was decent and it even offered counter-op.

hmm I can't really think of any other games.......

...crap now I've just reminded myself that the next TMNT game isnt multiplayer.  I'd love to see someone try another side-scrolling beat em up with co-op.  X-Men Legends was close but it was 3D and the graphics were complete @ss.

Could anyone imagine a 3D platformer co-op game? Me neither, but after replaying Donkey Kong Country again some type tag team effort doesn't seem to bad. The leading character does the main traveling and hoping around while the rear character could... attack as well? I don't know. You could do certain super jumps together with perfectly timed but presses or something.

I wan't something like that, with out guns.

Portrait of Ruin is limited to just Boss rush mode.

I was expecting a TRUE co-op where you could join a current main game and help that player with the bosses, puzzles and defeating the stages. But the co-op is just boss rush mode which is just three levels.

So yeah, its FAR from the best co-op ever.

With online gaming getting more and more popular, I expect to see many more co-op games popping up. Personally, I'd kill for a re-worked co-op version of Half-Life 2.

I just found this:

Army of Two

As long as it's not a piece of EA's usual crap, it looks good. Seems like a Gears of War ripoff with better co-op.

Not that it's the greatest example, but Sonic Adventure had a weak attempt at this when Tails is following Sonic.  It was more of an easter egg than anything practical, but I would love to see something like that fleshed out

I think it would be awesome if a SplinterCell type Ninja game came out with Co-op.

Like, both players most protect each other while using the cooperation between them to infiltrate places and assassinate people. For example, you use a grappling hook to climb up a wall. The rope is only strong enough for one, so the other must wait until the first person climbs to the top. While at the top, the player who went first must protect his fellow Ninja as he attempts to climb up. If he fails to, the enemy will sever the rope and kill his partner.

Earth defence Force 2017 has coop. If you don't have EDF2 that may be worth picking up.

If you have a 360, check out the demo of Monster Madness.  I don't know all that's in the demo, but the game will have 4-player co-op.

Earth Defense Force for the PS2 and Xbox 360 are excellent Co-op games.

It is one of the Best "mindless" shooters I have played.  The action is always intense.  The weapon variety, and the weapons in general are great fun to use.

And the game may have the Best Sniper Rifles of any game I have played.
