I need some RPG advice for my DS.
« on: February 26, 2007, 10:09:41 AM »
Ok, I've never been one for handheld gaming. The only experiences with the medium I've ever had have been with the Gameboy and I hated it. My mother bought me three of them in my lifetime (for some reason she thought I loved the thing). The first one broke and I didn't care. The second one I lost and didn't care to look for it. The third one (a gameboy color) I sold for 10 bucks and told my mother it fell out of my pocket on a roller coaster. I was just too in love with my SNES, handhelds just didn't seem to be technologically capable of delivering the same experiences. I skipped the Advance entirely, and I have so far had no motivation to purchase a DS.

Until now.

I have to admit, I am absolutely head over heels excited for FFXII: Revenant Wings. I adored its older console brother and with every new bit of information released for the game, my excitement doubles. The technology in handhelds seems to have gotten to the point where RPGs on them can provide truly engaging experiences similar to consoles, and I am absolutely purchasing a DS for Revenant Wings. But I don't know where to go from there.

I realize that I've missed out neglecting handhelds for so long, so I want to purchase some other games with my DS as well. Only I don't know where to start. I want RPGs specifically, and I know I could just look for reviews but a lot of them can be pretty misleading, so I'd rather ask around here.

I figure I'll buy 2-3 other games for my DS besides RV, so...if you could only have 3 RPGs for your DS, which would they be?

These RPG's are pretty good;

Magical Starsign's pretty underrated. The graphics are hardly even GBA standard most of the time, but it's a lot of fun. It doesn't take itself too seriously and the turn based battle system is actually pretty good for once. Contact's another amusing one, although it does kind of drag on and lose the humour after a while.

I can't even recommend a third. :] Probably Final Fantasy 3 I guess, dunno. Mario & Luigi 2 was a massive let down for me, but I seem to be in the minority there.

You sir, are an epitome of all that is evil, unwholesome and vile in this world. I take my glove off and challege you to a duel!

I haven't played Rocket slime, but I hear good things about it. Once I get some money coming it, that is my first stop. Although, if your looking for something more hardcore, then don't consider my recommendation.

Since the DS can play GBA games, you have a great selection from those. Unless you want DS-only games. I'd say definitely get Golden Sun (GBA), and also get Mario & Luigi / 2, and the GBA Pokemons obviously..

if turn based counts, Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.  I just got Final fantasy III but so far i love it.  Lastly Tales of Phantasia, but only if u like the series.

I also recently bought Yggdra Union so far so good.

Also SNK vs. Capcom Card Fighters DS is coming soon if u like Card RPG's,  Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja, if u like dungeon crawlers, and u can't forget Dragon Quest IX.

Overall though i guess i'd have to say my favs are FE, FFTA, and ToP.

Hey, any word on some non-anime RPGs coming out for the DS?  So far, my DS library is limited to a Wario Ware game and Animal Crossing, and I've been thinking about expanding my horizons.  With video games.

Get Contact, it's a love it or hate it kind of thing but I thought it was brilliant.  FFIII is good but it's hard to sustain enthusiasm for a grinding RPG for 40 hours (I got about 3/4ths through it before I got bored).  Those are, honestly, the only 2 RPG's worth getting on the system.

I agree with Infernal, Partners in Time is terribly overrated.

Well the guys behind Star Wars KOTR are supposed to be working on DS stuff.
