Anyone else catch Michael Mann's horrific tribute to American Cinema (or whatever that cheesy montage was meant to be) towards the end of the Academy Awards?

From the trite cut of Superman in space to the tired (not to mention predictable) clips of Scarface and Reservoir Dogs.

The worst part was the cut of several war movies displayed over an out of place Hero by Foo Fighters.

Michael Mann is the worst (or at least the most over-rated) director ever.

Svevan can suck it.

Needs more Dog Day Afternoon.

I preferred the tribute to foreign films myself. I teared up when they showed the picture of Robert Altman.

Miami Vice pretty much sucks, it's only redeeming quality is the fact that parts of it were filmed here

He makes big budget crap. He has more in common with Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer than any respectable director should.

I haven't see The Insider; Heat was over-rated; Collateral was crap.

Michael Mann likes to put Chris Cornell out of place into movies. I like Chris Cornell music, but it sounds so weird interjected into Collateral and Miami Vice. And two sex in the shower scenes?

Miami Vice would have been a better movie if it wasn't called Miami Vice. The title give you certain expectations.

Whatever dude, I know 376 bank robbers and they all told me the bank scene in Heat was their inspiration because it was so bad ass.

The best movie of last year (of the few I've seen) was A Prairie Home Companion. Very close call with A Scanner Darkly, The Illusionist, Inside Man, Marie Antoinette, Miami Vice, Volver, and Monster House. The Fountain, Children of Men, Pan's Labyrinth, The Science of Sleep, and MI:III were all pretty good too. Other than these, I have probably seen only ten other movies this year. I am selective at the theatre, plus I have to drive out of town to see the really good stuff.

Uh, The Departed is out on DVD for a couple weeks now

Prairie Home Companion - Doesn't interest me
A Scanner Darkly - The plot is thin, but the subtext has volumes
The Illusionist - The Prestige was better
Inside Man - Smart thriller with better than average dialog
Marie Antoinette - Kirsten Dunst bugs me more every time I see her.
Miami Vice - Great Cinematography, but the betrays the original source material in tone and spirit
Volver - Know little about it
Monster House - Worst CGI cartoon movie I saw last year
The Fountain - Want to see it
Children of Men - Want to see it
Pan's Labyrinth - Been told to see it
The science of Sleep - Looks intriguing
MI: III - The best of the Mission Impossible movies

Somehow, I watched Marie Antoinette. What an utter waste of time. I watched nearly the exact same movie in Grade 11 Social Studies class.. in fact, that low-budget version was better.

I saw Blood Diamond yesterday - it's very very average for an hour 40. Lots of bang and noise and i will hurt your wife etc etc. The last half hour or so really ramp it up and make it worth it. It's not as deep as The Constant Gardener though. Nothing touches that.

Inside Man was good-ish svevan but the ending killed it in a big way. After the twist of how they did it, it wimped out like nothing happened.
