Nintendo Releases "Everybody Votes Channel"
« on: February 13, 2007, 01:51:31 PM »
Did you see this coming? Yes/No

Nintendo has released a new channel for the Wii today. Seemingly out of nowhere the "Everybody Votes Channel" is now available via the Wii Ware section of the Wii Shop. A new system update is also available (though the firmware version number does not change) and required to enable the new channel. The channel opens with a description stating:

Welcome to the Everybody Votes Channel. Here, you can provide your responses to popular questions and let your opinion be heard around your area, and even around the world!

Upon setting everything up, you can register up to six Miis as "voters". These voters can then answer poll questions such as "Which do you think is a more romantic Valentine's Day gift? Chocolate or Roses?" Voting is accomplished by dragging the Miis to different sides of your screen, each representing a different answer. You can also predict which answer you think will get more overall votes.

Polls are only open for a certain amount of time, and the channel says that results will be sent out after the poll closes. The three currently active polls expire in 1, 3, and 6 days respectively. Polls are available nationally and globally, though questions differ between the two. Additionally, users can suggest questions.

Voter stats are recorded in the following categories: Number of Votes Cast, Prediction Record, Prediction Accuracy, "How Tuned in Are You?", and "Distance from Popular Opinion".

Of course, everything is set to up-beat background music.

Well this is fun.  Not something that takes up a lot of time either.  Will be interesting to see how much it gets updated.

Well, quite a surprise, and definitely says there will be new channels, and it might not be long before we get some of them, too, not even including this one.

They have questions expiring in 1 3 and 6 days. My bet is that there are always three questions available nationally, who knows globally (probably 3 max there too). So, they should be updating it every few days.

Color me paranoid. What's the purpose? Marketing? Marketing for their partners? Must Nintendo know every single thing about me, down to what socks I wear? This can't be as innocent as it looks...

Does the new system update do anything special, or is it just for the Everybody Votes Channel?

The system update allows you to better specify your "region". Previously it was country only. Now (for the US at least) you can also choose State.

I didn't see this coming at all. But the write your own polls is great, my first question was "Do you want to see more games have full online play?"
Answers, "Hell, yes!" and "What he said"
Great chance to tell nintendo what I want.

Yes, Nintendo.  You keep releasing good VC games and entirely new Channels while my Wii is unavailable.  >_<

Well, that means when it's returned, I'll have more to do with it to welcome it back!

Just a little correction, the update to 2.0U has been out for awhile. I think it was a few weeks ago.

It's a decent channel, voting is pretty quick and I can't wait to see how close I am to the overall opinion. I hope that future polls can be expanded to more than 2 answers though.

If nothing else, this proves that Nintendo CAN, in fact, surprise us with new channels.

Wonder if this was going to be their holiday surprise.

Hell, it DID come out almost on Valentines. It's kinda a "holiday" surprise...

I'll ask the question "Do u like Friend Codes: Yes or No", my prediction will be 100% on No.

It's a neat little game.  Bolsters the sense of "community" they always talked about.  Hopefully this means we'll be getting plenty of other surprise channel releases every few months throughout the Wii's life span.

Isn't the friend codes thing greatly exaggerated?

I mean, the ONLY game that uses it at the moment is Pokemon Revolution, and that's because of the DS game. Nintendo has said time and time again that you only needed one code per system, and I doubt third parties would bother to implement an independent code system for each of their games.

Am I missing something?

Do you have any links or sources that Nintendo said only one code per system? I am not sure what exactly was said about it, all I know about is Pokemon Revolution!

I checked the Wikipedia info (as well as the links on IGN), and they just mention that online one code per game was needed to connect to the internet.

Like I said, Pokemon Battle Revolution uses a second code because of the DS game and such.

I guess we'll know for sure when Nintendo finally releases a second online game!

I was concerned that this was some kind of marketing thing too, until I saw the questions.  I mean, what is Nintendo really going to get out of knowing that I like dogs more than cats? (actually, I couldn't answer that one, I like them both equally, and for different reasons).

I think it's just one more example of Nintendo trying to get us to use Wii every day - Nintendo has stated that every day use is a goal for Wii, which in my opinion is a much loftier and more interesting goal than "have the most powerful hardware".  Practically speaking, this is probably the most useless channel yet - but it's very quick and easy and I think many people will check on it as often as Nintendo updates it.
That's my opinion, not yours.

As of right now 100% of online Games on the Wii uses Friend Codes. (Pokemon Rev)
50% with online capability uses Friend Codes.(Pokemon Rev and Elebits)

Got of love tuned truths.

Anyway, I think this channel will help Wii owners feel more like a community.  Plus, as mentioned, its a good way to give Nintendo Feedback.  I want to pose question:

"Is Nintendo of America's Reward Program not up to the Standards presented by Japan and Europe's programs? !: Yes 2: No"

Or a poll on how people feel about Online play.  I do agree though that hopefully it will be one day be expanded to 4 choices and maybe include pictures in special cases.

I don't trust it until it has a paper trail. I bet it's being counted by Diebold.

That aside, it's not out in Europe yet.

I'll ask the question "Do u like Friend Codes: Yes or No", my prediction will be 100% on No.

You guys can forget any questions like Friend Codes yes/no from ever being posted.  This is clearly not meant to be some serious polling place, if it was questions like that would've came up from the beginning.
