Trial version of Internet Channel no longer free
« on: February 13, 2007, 02:21:20 AM »
I went to the Shop to download Kid Icarus in the VC, and out of curiosity, I stopped to check Wii Ware.  The Internet Channel Trial Version is now 1200 points to download.  I don't know if an internet browser with awkward typing is worth $12, especially when most people who have internet access have it for their computer, and you can download very good internet browsers for free on it.  The only benefit I see to the Wii web browser is homebrew Wii games made with Flash, Shockwave, Java, or some other such internet programming language (assuming the other languages are compatible with the final version of the Internet Channel when it's released).

What do you guys think about the Internet Channel?  Is it worth the price?  Do you think they'll lower it?  I'd rather buy a couple good NES games than update the browser when it's finalized if that's the price it'll be going for.

If I were you I would wait on the Internet Channel. It isn't really worth $12 as it stands. Maybe in the final version they will fix it up some, but as it stands, it definitely is not worth it.

I actually thought it was going to be free until the final version came down sometime in July. Guess not.

I already got the free version.  It's pretty good for that price.

I had thought that the final version would be 500 Wii Points, a one-time fee, when finalized.

If the trial version is a whole 1200 Wii Points, the final version could be that much or even more.  That's common sense.

I was going to say something about bandwidth or servers or something, but then I remembered that it's just a browser downloaded onto your Wii, surfing the Internet through your existing Internet connection, meaning that there's no bandwidth/load/whatever issues on Nintendo's part while you surf.  So they can't justify it that way.

Well, I guess they calculated that enough people will be willing to pay that much.  It's all about the money, they wouldn't charge that much if they didn't think anyone would pay it.

Me, personally?  I might pay 1200 if the finalized version is much closer to as good as any browser on my computer and it's a one-time fee.  If it costs more than that, I'd be leery.  Subscription, definitely not.

1,200 - no way it's worth that price. The trial isn't worth paying for. The final build might be worth 500 points, but that's it. I wish Nintendo could have worked out a deal with Mozilla to develop a Wii version of FireFox instead. Has anyone tried to get a wireless keyboard to connect to their Wii via bluetooth?

The shouldn't call it a "trial" version if they are charging. Considerring that Opera on PC is free, I think it's pretty lame to charge for it at all.

I agree. I actually think that once the final build becomes available, Opera should ship, pre-installed on all Wii's - especially since the "Internet Channel" is an advertised feature of the console.

Opera Mobile only recently became free.  That is what they considered this.  Though Perrin Kaplan I believe stated that if you had the trial version you get the full version for Free.  Though you have to take anything she says with a really large grain of salt.

I thought it would be free for six month.. Nov =1 Dec =2 Jan =3 Feb =4.  There are still two months left, what is Nintendo doing.

Anyways, I have the trial and used it like twice, my computer is much better to look at stuff online.

This sounds to me like a weird bug in the shop.  The trial version is supposed to be free, and even the final version in March is supposed to be free until June or July, when it will start being sold for (I think) 500 points.

I wish Nintendo could have worked out a deal with Mozilla to develop a Wii version of FireFox instead.

Firefox is GPL, means the sourcecode would have to be public (probably even including parts of the SDK). Nintendo would never do that. Besides, Firefox is a big ressource hog and would run even worse on the Wii than Opera does.

Considerring that Opera on PC is free, I think it's pretty lame to charge for it at all.

Opera on the PC is only free because their two main competitors, IE and Firefox are free and because the company now makes their money with browsers for embedded systems (cellphones, PDAs, consoles). Obviously they have to make money somewhere.

Well the trial version on mine is only 700 points.

But what that number you're seeing on the bottom of the screen really means is how many WiiPoints you have left, not the cost of the trial version.

I just got my Wii LAN Adapter yesterday.  So I guess I should wait and see if its a bug and goes back to being free.

I think I would pay for the final version if it did cost money.

Although, I have a better web browser on my computer, I find that the Wii Browser allows me to easily show YouTube videos to my friends, and is just a nice break to be able to check something quickly on while in the living room.

It is definitely not your primary source for searching the internet, but it does have its uses and it does them well.

Even Perrin just said that the Trial version was FREE, and that everyone should hurry up and download it while its free. She also said that if you download the Trial version, the Final version would also be FREE. No announcement has been made about Final version pricing, according to Perrin. It was all in that interview she just did.

I sure if you have the trial version you just have to click the update button for the final version.

Personally, I am wishing Nintendo would do some smart things with its upgrade feature.

I am thinking that if you buy a NES game that had a SNES equivalent you should be able to download the SNES game as an upgrade.  It would make purchases like Wario's Woods fair.  And I think there are a few other odd choices on which version was made available.

UPDATE.  I am a freakin' idiot and I apologize for making this topic when I was half-asleep and tired as hell.  It turns out the "1200 Wii Points" listed at the bottom of the screen was not the price of the internet channel, but the points I still had in reserve.  This topic can be deleted because I am a moron.

C'mon we all know that Nintendo is the reigning & uncontested champ of selling you the same thing over and over and over again.

Look at Pokemon, and Nintendogs, then look at the GBA and the Mario series from NES & SNES to GBA to VC. Buy it once, buy it twice, then buy it one more time.
