Wii Black Screen of "Death"
« on: February 12, 2007, 04:06:34 PM »
The "Death" is in quotes b/c the system isn't actually dead.

I recently hooked up my system after a week long stretch where the console wasn't connected or powered.  When entering any of the online areas there was a significant delay from the time you hit start to when you would see the typical loading screen.  That delay was accompanied by a blank black screen with no indication that the Wii was actually still alive.  This pause was most noticable with the Shopping channel which took a good 2 min in this state.  It was also quite long for the Mii channel, followed by the forcast and news channels.

I can see a lot of people mistaking 2 min of pitch black screen as a non-resonsive, locked-up Wii.... has this happened to many folks?

One time it took more than a minute to load up THE EFFING MII CHANNEL.

It seemed like it's busy trying to do some WiiConnect24 refreshing plus game disc recognition at the same time.  This was after a week of red-light inactivity.

It's a game console, it wasn't designed for multitasking...I guess.

The BSoD happens to me also once in while, no big deal.

I laugh in your general direction.

Three days ago it took approximately a half-hour to load Gunstar Heroes.

I think it might have to do with the timing of it all. I believe Wii Connect24 looks for updates and what-not after every some-odd amount of minutes or hours (or both), and if you happen to try to load a channel that uses WiiConnect24 (all of them besides your downloaded VC games and discs use it) during that "update check", then you have to wait till the Wii is done doing what it's doing. It's happened to me a few times.

Maybe they could release a software update that makes the blue light of greatness flash rapidly when it's looking for updates, or a message on the screen. I think they just underestimated how many people would have WiFi this early on.

I think I would have given up and powered off the Wii about 5 minutes into the Gunstar Heroes wait.

The sheer audacity of the situation made me want to see how long it would take to load the ROM.  I played Advance Wars DS while I waited.

I've had this issue too. If I am playing my Wii every day and looking at the various channels, it's never such an issue. However, if a few days or weeks pass without powering on the system, I can count on the BSoS* (even a non-WC24 channel, like I was going to play a GC game the other day, and it took a long time)

*I've decided to call it the Black Screen of "Swoon," since it's (as you said) not dead, but merely swooning at all the WC24 greatness that is pouring through its circuitry all of a sudden.

Regardless of what you call it, though, it's ANNOYING.

edit: why is this in General Gaming and not in Nintendo Consoles??

I think I might have started this thread back when there was a "technical discussion" forum area.

I can also count on it occurring after weeks of down time, as that seems to be the underlying cause of it all...

It's performing involuntary connection tests.  I am now positive.  The 2nd best guess is it's doing its best to contain REGGIE inside.

Um, damn...

It's not like Gunstar has an online component to bog the Wii down or anything. 30 minutes is insane...

So when I go to play REUC tomorrow, I'm going to be f*cked, is that what I'm hearing?

Well every time it happens (I go a time without booting up) I always forget to start a trace and thus never really get to check what it's doing over the wire while the system "blacks out"

you cant compare Reggie to the kool-aid man, its just not right.

...though it would be funny to jump out and shout "heres that surprise! sorry its late!" then punches you in the face and brakes any Sony products around..

too bad Reggie doesnt apologize

So I still note this happening, I also did a quick search and find it hilarious at the *many* convoluted 'solutions' to this problem.

All because the system is trying to grab stuff online and just like to keep the user in the dark while doing so.

So my question is... has anyone heard a response from Nintendo as to why they don't seem to mind letting this little issue go?  Nintendo's site says any A/V problem with blank screens - call tech support for repair, but all of us here know our system isn't faulty, the software is just retarded...

Happens on my system too.   Only a handful of times have I been forced to just shut her down because I was convinced it was never going to actually load the game/channel.

It happens when you don't Free Your Wiily everyday.  It's reconnecting to the net and refreshing any general Mii/message board updates.  Like any router and website and Wi-Fi game and the internet, the connection to [whatever] isn't always 100% successful, not always 100% fast, and not always 100% fruitful, sitting there waiting and confused.

It's less likely to happen when WiiConnect24 is active all the time.  But if you power-down all the way, some device is bound to forget recent relationships with another.

Yeah, what Pro said.  Have you just gone a few days between play sessions lately?

It's not a product of something breaking.. it's another example of Nintendo dumbing down a system to the point of ridiculousness.  Is it so hard to put a progress bar up there that says what it's doing?

there iss no such thing as multi tasking , just a schedule of activities that go back in forth in time shares, these can be microseconds(and not noticeable), and minutes (annoying!) My Wii has done this. Im so used to this sort of crap with computers it never occured to me how much it sucks and how i've never had any other game console do that for me. I should have been more angry!
