OK here is my advice from personal experience, after ending up taking back 2 TVs, I finally found a great TV and one you may be interested in. I ended up with the Hitachi - UltraVision 42" Plasma HDTV, it costs around 1500$ and has a great picture. Not only that but it has burn-in protection features such as pixel orbiting and white wash, in addition to 3 HDMI hookups, instead of the normal 2.
Everything looks gorgeous, including the Wii to an extent. In regards to burn-in with all the protection features, you can also create a burn-in DVD which you let play in your TV when you are not watching it. It is recommended to run your TV at least 100hrs before you play anything with static images, though I've heard 200 is the optimal amount (which I did). That may sound like a long time but with the Burn-in dvd you can have it doing it while you are away or in bed for the night.
Hitachi is a trusted manufacturer and I can definately vouch for its screen quality (in addition it has a slightly higher resolution than most other Plasmas). With that said you may also want to look into LCD TVs, such as the Westinghouse or HP ones which can hit around 42 inches for under 1500$. Be warned though, if you are like me, you may be able to see a ever so slight "blur" when images are quickly moving on the screen, even with response times as low as 8ms or 6ms, but this depends on the person. In conclusion if you purchase a TV get one at a place like Best Buy or perhaps Circuit City which have a pretty no-hassle way to return your TV. Heck they let me return two TVs without the original boxes!
