I don't know a lot of their stuff, but I like what I've heard.

Someone did a mash-up of one of their songs and a Garbage song which I really liked.  It's called Paranoid Funk.

Because my friend had a Daft Punk CD in the car for our E3 trip, I will forever associate "Technologic" with the streets of LA.

What about the KLF then? Or Sonic Animation? They were about the lyrics as well.

My old boss used to listen to techno all day everyday, needless to say, after a year and a half of working 10 feet away from him, I hate techno with a passion. It's just annoying noises put to a beat, or remixes of good songs turned into absolute dog crap. If you are into dancing I suppose it does the trick (along with Rap/Hip Hop/R&B), but to quote my good friend Maddox, "Dancing makes me envy the crippled."

Though I will say there is a small percentage of good techno out there that actually sounds cool and gets you pumped. Unfortunately the barrier of entry into techno is not very high. With any modern computer and some decent software your average joe-shmoe can mix their own track in a matter of minutes.

Sitting next to someone who plays any type of music loudly all the time will make you hate it.  I had this guy next to me for about 6 months who played a lot of stuff I actually like - Genesis, Crash Test Dummies, Weird Al, Johnny Cash, and by the end I learned to hate certain songs by all of them because he played the same like 200-song playlist over and over again for a few hours each and every day.

The worst was when he'd put on Aqua.  COME ON BARBIE LETS GO PARTY.

Anyway, I like Daft Punk and techno in general.  Daft Punk does get a bit too repetitive, but they are good at putting together that throbbing, catchy sound that gets stuck in the head and can make you move.

That's my opinion, not yours.

its weird, i normally dislike most of the techno i've ever heard because i too find it to be mindless emotionless repetitive garbage...
but daft punk pulls it off for me. i think its that they dont use (or atleast overly use) stupid noises and sound effects in their music.
who wants to hear a whistle in a 5min techno song, for example, that doesnt change pitch or tone or anything?!?

i agre with mr jack:

but without any talent and some knowledge of music what you get is crap. daft punk has some pretty good compositions,
as do Chromeo but the majority of stuff i've heard sounds like a a heartless machine put it together, which is why it sucks. i dont
consider something music if it doesnt have something that can be considered a verse/chorus/breakdown/bridge/intro/outro or in short,
some sort of song structure. maybe its just the musician in me that feels that way but honestly i've always thought of it that way.
if its the same measure or two looped over a drumbeat for even a minute its not a song to me. maybe its my short attention span...

I'm a closet dancer... if im feeling the groove (to any type of music) yeah i'll move to it but usually its just when im bored,
alone in my room just listening to music, and its not like i go all out either.... that or when im drunk at a club. liqour is the only thing
that can get me moving out on a dance floor, if not im a wallflower lol

So often to me techno seems like a missed opportunity.  I think good techno is catchy as hell which is always a key element in songs I like.  A good song has to be memorable.  I have to be able to hum it.  So Daft Punk wins praise from me for being hummable.  I have never heard a forgettable Daft Punk song, though I have only heard their bigger hits.  That shows some talent.  Some bands, of any genre, seem too focused on sound or performance but consider a melody as optional.

But it feels like a missed opportunity because there are great hooks and melodies that remain undeveloped.  So many techno songs are instrumentals or they have "Around the World" style nothing lyrics.  Why waste a good melody on something like that?  Give that hook or melody some structure and turn it into a full realized song.  Da Funk has this amazing hook but it seems wasted as it is.  It could be part of a whole song but instead the "song" is just that hook repeated endlessly with little parts where it gets quieter and comes back and stuff like that.

I think techno artists could be great collaborators.  They can get some good hooks and melodies going to start a song off and then have someone else write full lyrics and structure the song in a logical format.  I see techno as the start of a great idea that isn't fully explored.

However I also tend to have a huge bias against artists that don't use real instruments.  A good rule probably would be that a real musician doesn't require electricity.

I was a big fan of Paul van Dyk's for a while.  He's a trance DJ, if that means anything to anyone.

I liked that his music was always a bit different.  All of his albums were original material, not remixes of other songs.
He brought singers in for some songs, one of which is how I discovered him.

Some of his songs I thought were really catchy, so much so that I just made up my own words to sing along to them.

Other than that, I was never much of a techno fan.  Just a few things here and there, like the few Daft Punk songs I've
heard on the radio, or songs in movie soundtracks (like Run Lola Run), for example.  I've never been a clubber.  When
I lived in New York, I once went to his superhyped club, paid a ridiculous cover charge to get in, and then left within 10
minutes.  Granted, it was a hip hop club, so that may have been part of it, but still.

I've lost myself now.

(by the way, is there a way to get the forum dimensions back to normal in my browser when some idiot decides to post something that stretches it two twice its normal width?)

Well I have listend to some trance myself and, and even attempeted a few myself.

I think what i like about them the most s what has been already mentioned, they are one fo the few good techno bands who actualy make
music.

I am usually into the heavy bass and high pitched synth stuff myself but for some reason Daft Punk always gets to me.

I love to dance, I aint ashamed of it I even battle people on a regular basis, Ima b-boy through and through, but i dont just break i learned lots
of different styles and love all dance music.

I am one of those people that likes wide range of elctronit music, not all nescasrilly techno persay but its easier for the layman who doesnt know
the difference to just call it all techno and people knwo what I mean.

After releasing two craptastic godawful rap cds I decide to switch back to making electro music, which I am more passionate about and better at
and I have been listening to non stop Daft Punk lately for inspiration and motivation. Its the most excited for musci I have been ina long time.

So I naturally wanted to share that with all of you cool peoples.

Plus ever since Nintendo turned me down I really have been determined to make my music better. not for profit but just to get better.
