Idea: Make-a-game game
« on: December 22, 2006, 12:39:12 PM »
Personally I think this would be perfect for the Wii.

We've already got the Mii channel, so there's your game characters right there.

If they updated the photo channel a bit, or maybe even added a paint channel, then you've got art for your game.

Then all they need is the actual make-a-game bit, and a way to distribute them (if not through the VC), and itd be perfect
doncha think?

You mean as a channel?  That would be a great idea.  Or even a channel where you can use your mii's and put them in short movies ala "the movies".  There are so many possibilities.

too bad we couldn't get something like Microsoft's XNA developer tools.  I think Microsoft had a great idea there, but I don't like some of the small print...

I'd love to have the chance to create my own game for the Wii... maybe you could even distribute them over the Internet through the Wii Ware section of the Wii Shop Channel for others to download, for free of course.

The probability that Nintendo will allow the execution of any sort of user-created machine code is less likely than the proposed game creator (sadly). That won't stop crackers/hackers, of course.

Thanks for listening.

WHY would they not do this? It'd be great. Maybe the Wii would be the birthplace of another Counter Strike...

I can dream can't I?

Anyone else remember those RPG Maker games they used to make for the PS one and PlayStation 2, as well as the PC?  It'd be pretty neat if they made a Wii version of those games.  Your game could be in 2-D or 3-D, and you could save your creation(s) to an SD Card and upload them for people to download and play.

Great concept, but seemingly too tough to do. I'm not particularly interested in playing anybody else's poorly made game that is already restricted by the boundaries of the editor and I'm not particularly interested in making my own cookie cutter game. Alot of work goes into the production of a game and I don't think that anyone can make a tool that can make potentially interesting video games.

I think a better idea is for people to start hitting up Flash and making some really awesome Flash games that people can play on the Wii. It would be nice if somehow keyboard keys could be mapped to 1 and 2 and the directional pad on the keyboard was mapped to the directional pad on the Wiimote. This will allow for platformers and simple NES style games along with the obvious pointer type games. This gives indie developers a really simple device to make games with and a really easy way to distribute those games (just hit a URL and play, no downloading). I am actually kind of excited by the prospect of developing Flash games to play on the Wii. I think it opens a whole new door which could be a significant advantage for Nintendo.

They just need to buy out Enterbrain or at least bribe them enough to make software for the Wii (might solve itself if the Wii becomes #1 this gen) and force them to release in the west, too. There's more than RPG maker, there's also fighter maker, shmup maker, etc.

come on this is out of the question, it would take up too much space, the only way you could do it is if they added support for an external usb hard drive....it's doubtful, give it up

that was obviously a joke, developers use those languages to make games. If making games is what you want to do than it would be a good idea to learn those

If Nintendo were to support a "Create-a-game" application, I'd highly suggest that they use the Game Maker as a model.  Game Maker's very professional, easy to learn, but difficult to master.  It's also quite sophisticated for a (mostly) free game development tool, with further expandibillity readily accessible for those who are interested and knowing.  There are some people(including myself), who have been able to entirely recreate portions of Mario, Zelda, and even Metroid with all of the quality and polish you'd expect from Nintendo.  Not to mention its only around 10 megabytes, with each Game Maker .exe being around 1-7 megabytes.

I think indie development should be heavily supported by Nintendo, but unfortunately I don't see it happening.  Microsoft seems to be taking a far greater stance on it, and so Microsoft may win me over as a potential developer in the future.  XNA just makes indie game development so much easier.  I cannot wait until I can begin building some prototype games for the XBox 360.
