BlkPaladin's "first game".
« on: December 13, 2006, 02:19:59 PM »
Since some on these forum express interess in trying my first attempt to make a 2D game for my classes. I'm posting where to find it. But please bear in mind.

1) This was a class project, though I recieved a 100% on it, its shovel wear. I put in a little less then 4 work days of effort into the programming of the code. Because I had other classes and work. I know where the problems are.

2) Technically the files are none redistrubitable. I used two file I don't have full permission to distribute, but then again the people at OCR, where I recieve the music files don't have this permission either. So use at your own risk.

3) This is only one level.

4) The file is about 10MB in size due mostly to the mp3 files the rest are the sprite maps.

5) You can see my artistic accomplishment in the game (you will know when you see it, I can't draw...)

Sorry but you will more than likely going to have to update DirectX to play the game....Here is the link.

And with out further adue. Here is the link. (Right-click and save target as.)

This is on my site, I'm hosting my family's kennel site, I hope to expand my part soon. (So i.e. please be gentle...)

Oh yeah it based loosly off of Gauntlet. The project was grade with limitation of time in mind. But the instructor is a industry professional so it makes me happy he really liked what I did. Also I hope to have some sort of RPG done or in demo form by March. (And eventually get it published to the VC, if I'm lucky.. Other wise I will use the XNA to get it on Windows or the 360, but it will be published. ) I'm just deciding between an action RPG in the vien of Zelda/Mana or a turn based one like FF, it will be in 2D since that is what I'm currently experienced in. (The turn based one will be more programmer friendly for my first full game. :/ )

EDIT: Added my comments.   Oh and I can be a little harsh on myself I have a slight problem with a bit of perfectionism and it does get at odds with my tendency to be a procrastinator.   EDIT 2: Sorry this late at night engrish gets bad.

You need to include "d3dx9_30.dll" to the folder...at least for some OS/video card configurations. It's probably best to just add it anyway. The game characters look nice, but there are a couple problems (at least for me). First, some of the open spaces cannot be entered...and second, hitting enemies does nothing...and them hitting you does nothing. It seems to have potential though. The only programming I've ever done (aside from html...which I guess isn't really programming) is making "ants walk up the screen" using BASIC on an Apple II E when I was in about 4th grade.

Hitting them does do something and eventually kills them. I ment to add a damage indicator but I ran out of time. To get it do stuff you have to walk one mor forward until the enemy starts to attack you and attack. The HP on each of the enimies is 30, 40 and 50 that is about the number of attaks you need to do to kill them then they curl up, die and disappear.

Do you guys have the latest DirectX from microsoft's msdn site. My bad the instructor had us dl it and that is what it is made in. Because it works on my computer without the file, so it has to be the update. Give me a second I will locate the link.

See if this works this the the December release for DirectX for end-users. Which means it newer than the one I currently have which is August's, so it sould have the file....

Here the link..

If it is its just like Microsoft to update something that a 2D game use, (then again I'm also using DirecShow to play the mp3 which may be the problem.  The only problem I had was when it closed down.

Sorry I forgot that Microsoft updates DirectX every 3 months or sooner, and they change things, and I compiled using an SDK that almost no one has.
EDIT: Yes I verified it. The problem is DirectX, you will need to download the newest version. I did a search on my computer to see if I could find the file. And it is in C:\Windows\System32, which means you will probally need more than just that file.

Oh yeah that's right the sprite maps are not protected. You can ignore the various stall animations, I didn't get them to work. Have fun.

Just a few notes keep the backgrounds brown or else the alpha blending will not work and you will end up with blocks because I encoded the blending for that color of brown. And the bad exit sign is the only exception, I unfortantly made the blending color black. The problem with the stall animation was I was trying to do something with randomazation and cycle counts. I forgot most computers work so fast now that usually that will not work. If I had time I was going to do something with time were every 30 second it would check to see if it was attacking or around the play and if it wasn have them go into their stall animations. But...Time got away from me. (I mostly blame my work)

lol 1 hour mod

editing it wasn't that different than editing the sprites in rpg maker 95, except unlike rpg 95 you set it up with more colors. Heres what you should do, youj have the basic setup to make an rpg, basically all you need is two layers, the free walk layer and the obstruction layer. The obstruction layer contains signs, and walls, switches. The free layer contains monsters(if they touch you you go into a battle screen) and just the tiles you walk on.

check out brutal chess, you may want to use something like that so you can understand how to make a 3d game.
