Spike TV's VGA awards winners
« on: December 09, 2006, 06:32:16 PM »
Now we don't need to tune in and watch annoying comedy skits, shallow MTV style presentation and stupid celebrities in order to see what won!

One of the reasons I posted this is that this is further proof that Sony isn't having that good of a year since the multi console and XBOX 360 ended up winning a great deal of the awards, while last year it was Sony that got the most wins.

And the winners are:

Tony Hawk Project 8 (Activision/Neversoft)

Its nice to see that Wii & TLoZ:TP make the list cause I heard they came out to late to be considered for the awards (supposedly filmed in the middle of last month), but it would have also been nice if they had made a NEW category just to award Wii Sports with something.

Hmm...considering the lack of hype for any individual Wii game besides Zelda (I mean, in relation to a bunch of the other games listed) ...this is pretty good. Wii needs a revolutionary FPS, soon, methinks. (and MP3 doesn't count, shame on you for suggesting it)

???

Am I the only one who doesn't see why this is winning game of the year. Personally I don't like Gears of War, but I would say the unanimous decision for GotY 2006 is either LoZ:TP or GoW. Oblivion is just kind of boring, and most of my friends who loved Morrowind hated Oblivion. Well, whatever, not like this really counts for anything anyway.

Don't think too hard about their picks, the VGA awards are pretty biased against the mainstream games. Elder Scrolls 4 is a good game, but I'm not sure it would be GotY material (personally I would give it to Zelda), but it is pretty close because it is a well designed game even if the fighting mechanics have a bit to be desired along with it having an unstable framerate in both PC and console versions.

According to Spike TV, GoW was released about 7 days b4 judgement was made and Zelda was released the the day of/before judgement. That makes it kinda of hard to push it for game of the year when they have barely gotten a chance to see how it sells or plays from the consumer perspective.

Yes but these are the Spike TV wards we're talking about, they'd give an award to Duke Nukem Forever. They don't care if a game is out or good, they just care how much money they got for the award.

The people at Spike know about as much about videogames as the people at G4.
I could care less about who won.

And I agree with you Jack, Oblivion should no have won. There are tons of games that are FAR better.

What surprises me the most is that Oblivion won in an award that appeals to the FPS/GTA/Madden crowd in a channel that caters to the hardcore guy. Oblivion is SO not the violence crowd. Even the RPG crowd is divided when it comes to Oblivion.

I suspect money hats are at play here...

Why the heck did Tony Hawk Project 8 win best individual sports?  From what I've seen most reviews for the game have been pretty bad.  Maybe they just wanted Tony Hawk to get an award not the actual game get an award.

Who in their right mind would plan an awards event during the middle of major releases? It's like having the Oscars before December.

The thing I don't understand, is how Oblivion won game of the year but LOST best PC game.  That makes ZERO sense.  If it's the best game of the year, and it's on the PC, than it should OBVIOUSLY be the best PC game.

I'm guessing that it won BEST GAME as an XBox 360 game.
Maybe it wasn't the best game on PC and the Xbox360 version is superior?

No, the PC version is far superior to the 360 version for one main reason, user created content :-p  Still doesn't make sense.

I didn't think Oblivion was XTREME enought for spike tv.  Is it me or are tv stations and the media really trying to cash in the "gamer culture" recently?

I think that's happened before with the Spike awards. Maybe they didn't feel comfortable giving GOTY to a PC or Nintendo game since those platforms aren't too popular in the US.

The good ol' boys at Gamespot have the goods in detail

Here are some highlights (or lowlights):

Quote

Former Dallas Cowboy Michael Irvin let go of a Wii Remote three times on the backswing of a Wii Sports golf game in a staged event, Masi Oka of Heroes dissed the WNBA when presenting the Best Team Sports Game Award, and Tyrese used the opportunity to promote his upcoming CD in the only ad-lib of the night.

They 'staged' letting go of the Wii-mote? Who the hell is Masi Oka? C'mon Tyrese, rappers shamelessly self-promote. R&B types don't need to..

Quote

....Sarah Silverman brought her usual shtick of sarcastic humor to the stage, which was unfortunately lost on most of those in the crowd. She went on a tirade against gamers, saying they "should get an award for their work in AIDS prevention" because they simply stand no chance of getting laid.

OH.HELL.NO

Quote

Thankfully for those in attendance, Silverman's remarks apparently didn't apply to them. The MTV-generation audience continually filed out of the auditorium throughout the night muttering, "I don't even play video games."

Looks like we still have a ways to go before....oh F*ck it. Who are kidding? Gaming will be never something to brag about to the 'beautiful people'!

Not a Double Post!

Looking at the nominee list, there were some tough choices as well as WTF winners. Imagine if Princess Peach won best Cyber-Vixen. Cyber? What is this, 1994?

Studio of the Year should have gone to Clover. They no longer exist, but they went out with a bang with Okami (Which got a few nominations but no hardware). What a shame...

MK for best fighting game? That's a joke. DOA4 and Tekken for the PSP should have battled it out for that one (bad pun intended).  What was the critera, for the game to have the most fighters? Seriously folks.

At least there's GDC and DICE to look forward to.. (No sarcasm intended.)
