Red Steel 2 confirmed?
« on: November 28, 2006, 06:45:36 AM »
Go Nintendo has the details

I would take this with a grain of salt, though. It IS a loosely translated paragraph, so the original website could've been talking about something else entirely.

Still, its good that they are moving on with the game.

One of the comments said it best:

"I could see this coming a mile away! The developers were talking about how the weapons they left out of Red Steel could be put in the sequel months ago in a video interview that was on GameSpot.com. So right then, and there I knew that we would see Red Steel 2 probably within the next year, or so. Which it better have online multiplayer next time!"

I badly want to see sales numbers on Red Steel, though...

I'm sure it sold quite well. Probably enough to warrant a sequel. We'll see in a few days.

Last I read, SB, the two most sold Wii games were Zelda and Red Steel. And on Amazon's best selling Wii games list, RS is actually above Zelda. So I'm guessing its doing well.

This is videogames.  Red Steel 2 starting being thought about while Red Steel was in development.  All they were waiting for was the game to sell worth a damn to greenlight the whole thing.  No sequel would be more surprising.

Didn't Gamestop/EB Games or someone say that Red Steel was the second-biggest seller behind Zelda for launch?

I bought it, and I like it. I'd buy a sequel if they clean up the control a bit, and add online multiplayer (including co-op). New weapons would be a great bonus too.

I'd kill for co-op sword battles where you and your friend stand back to back in a room full of sword-wielding ninjas...

Also, I agree with Ian that the sequel was basically a sure thing unless Red Steel did VERY poorly, which it quite clearly did not.

Games are like movies.  Ubisoft was brilliant to get their new franchises on a budding system.  It meant less competition for their game.  They did everything RIGHT with the Wii.

Now, they have an established franchise that did pretty good, and most importantly one with huge potential, that gamers want to play the sequel before it is even announced.

I see Red Steel 2 coming out either LATE 2007 or early 2008.  Using a beefed up engine from the first game, and coming up with a better control system should do wonders.  And if they are truly trying to get Far Cry online then they can use that code modified to get Red Steel 2 online quickly.

My wish would be for them to take all the time they need to polish up the engine and gameplay and release it in mid to late 2008.  Online multiplayer with a decent number of players, both online and split screen co-op, and a larger variety of weapons top my wish list.  It would also be cool if they made use of your ability to kill or spare defeated enemies to create a branching storyline.

I believe there was at least one case of that, but yes, I would have liked to see more.

Could you have shot the guy who you escorted to open the warehouse door after beating him in a swordfight? He showed up again later to threaten the old Yakuza boss.

Probably not.  One time I came across a sword wielder that I could see from far enough away that I could have a gun out.  I shot him repeatedly in the head, but it had no effect at all.  Chances are the warehouse guy was invincible to gunfire because he was technically a sword-fighting enemy, too.

What was the one case of branching? Or were you talking about something else?

The problem is when DOES this sequel come out? Late 2007 gives them only a year to optimize the engine, add new features, weapons, techniques, and twist the technology's arm to make it do some slightly neater stuff with the swordfighting.

But then again, the later they wait the later Red Steel fades out of the public eye. It doesn't have an online mode to keep the hype up, it's a launch game that'll be forgotten iin 5 months and completely forgotten in 1.5 years. They can't wait too long or else the franchise... well... wasn't ever a franchise.

I was gonna get Red Steel but went with DBZ instead, now I really want a 1st person shooter cuz thast what all the hype was about and I cant decide betweenm red steel and COD3. IS RS worth buying?

I didn't like Goldent Eye much, not my style of game, and thats sorta what RS reminds me of. I prefer Quake, Doom and Unreal style fps, and Halo too, so is it along those lines or is it more like the 007 style games? Does it play well and is the story good also? Ok well thast all for now.

I'm not denying that Halo had better multiplayer prospects than Red Steel does or that that's what kept Halo popular during the long wait for a sequel.  I was just pointing out an incongruity.  In my opinion, if Ubisoft wants Red Steel to become a huge franchise, which they'll need more of if they want to become the number 2 publisher in the industry, then Red Steel 2 has to be absolutely stellar.  It's especially going to need flawless and fun online multiplayer.  Nobody could do that by Christmas '07.  Plus, if they wait until 2008, they won't have to compete with Nintendo's biggest franchises for sales and attention.

YES!!! AHAHAHA REVIEWERS CONFIRMED IRRELIVANT

BRING ON MORE RED STEEL GOODNESS

WHERE DO I PRE-ORDER

All I want

- SKIPPABLE CUTSCENES. I JUST WANNA SHOOT THINGS, LET ME. The first playthrough of the game I didn't even try to skip them, but when replaying levels viewing the story again is just pointless.

- Sword fights LESS FREQUENT. I don't want to be going room to room with my gun, only to have to keep putting it away. Make it one sword fight at the end of each stage as a sort of "boss" or something, or make sword fighting optional. Not that it's BAD, I actually quite enjoy it, but it can get annoying when it takes over the game.

- More variety in weapons. Now I know a Super 3000 Laptop Sentry Gun or whatever wouldn't make sense in modern Japan, but something more than just pistol, shotgun and machine gun would be cool. A rocket launcher would be absolutely massive, especially with how awesome it looks when people fly up the air after explosions. That could take away emphasis on shooting explosives with other guns though.. hmm.

- Less loading? It wasn't that bad, but it was there, and noticable.

SMARTER AI!  For God's sake, it's like the Yakuza recruit from the Special Olympics.

Also: either ditch the Sword Kattas or make them simpler, some of them are near impossible to get right in real combat.

I want the ability to cut an enemy with my sword after I blow him up with a rocket launcher.

You break out your rocket and blast him BOOOM!! he comes flying right at you and then you cut him in half SLICE!! and the pieces fly off in either direction around you.  AWESOME!!

Online swordfighting multiplayer, please.

And FFS, take more TIME with the game to polish it.

Ubi is capable of putting out AAA material, as is evidenced with PoP and BG&E, but the rush to market takes games with potential and dashes them upon the rocks.

Take all the time they need, I say.

Dear Ubisoft,

Don't rewrite the engine. Just optimize the one you already have. Tighten up the gameplay, not the graphics.
