I think that is a nice way of saying that Nintendo isn't as actively trying to obtain content for that system as they are for one of their own.

It may not be up to them.  The NFL might have final say on something like that.  Or maybe it is allowed but Tecmo has to pay a fee for it and don't feel it's worth it.

The NFL would require monetary compensation, which I doubt Tecmo, or EA especially, would want to give.

Now, if Tecmo Super Bowl shows up sans NFL license - blame EA.

Blame the NFLPA first.  They would want payment, which would have to come out of EAs pocket.  I doubt a developer would want to pay for another developers players rights.

Is the NFLPA the only issue?  A lot of those players have probably retired since then.  Does the NFLPA have the right to grant permission to use the names of former players?  I would guess not, and that would make using real names an even bigger hassle.

I thought I read somewhere that the problem isn't with EA or the NFL per se, but the fact that they'd have to negotiate with each and every player individually for a game like Tecmo Bowl.

Might have read that at CAG.

That makes the most sense by far.

That's correct I think.  But I somehow thought they were all still under the nflpa because of pensions and the like.

I personally wouldn't blame EA myself, I just wanted to point out that at least in that situation one could conceivably place some blame on them, whereas it doesn't seem to apply to Tecmo Bowl at all.

One also has to differentiate between the NFL and the NFLPA - the former represents the team and league (allowing access to team and league logos), while the latter represents the players (allowing access to player names and likenesses). Tecmo Bowl only ever had the player's association license, and since (again, as I've understood it) that license only applies to active players the presence of player names is nearly impossible to achieve even with an NFLPA license (again, look at historic team rosters on any Madden title - all numbers, no names except for more recent historic teams whose players who are still active in the NFL).

Tecmo Super Bowl had both NFL and NFLPA licenses. If it comes, player names would most certainly be dropped again (for the same reasons they were in Tecmo Bowl), but TSB's team logos could be left in if Nintendo/Tecmo aquires the NFL license, but doing so would require the permission of both EA (who has the exclusive license and might desire compensation) and the NFL (who would most definitely want compensation). I personally suspect, however, that Nintendo/Tecmo probably won't even bother to ask.

That and I think Sega only wants to release titles they have been rereleasing to cut costs and make a quick buck.  Seams ot me all the games getting put up are available on newer consosles like GBA and PS2 anyways.

Personally, I don't care about the names of the players in Tecmo or even Super Tecmo Bowl.

Most if not all the players from that game series is retired, or are unknowns in today's market.  It would not be worth the money to restore it perfectly.

Just rename some teams and add numbers only to the characters.  That is all it needs...if the game if fun it will still be fun.

Why don't they add a simple name editor like in Ken Griffey Jr? Or at least make up names for Tecmo Super Bowl?  Tecmo Super Bowl has the stat tracking.  As such, it would be pretty annoying to see #34, #34, #28, #35, #24 as the leading rushers.  The NFL liscence doesn't really matter since they really only use the the nicknames on the pre-game screen.  Otherwise though, Tecmo Super Bowl is so solid I'd probably buy it for NES or SNES if they'd release it without any Nfl things.

'cause that requires changing the game more than just replacing a few strings.

Splatterhouse isn't too good a game.  But I always liked it because I liked Friday the 13th.

I started making a list in the first thread.  I have work on weekdays, but will try to work on the list as much as possible.  Hopefully a mod will help with the list.  So far I've only got a few NES games on there, but i'm working on it.  I'll add some more later tonight.  I have been using this as my release date list.
Wii Number: 1080 3358 2033 2880
FF3 Number: 2620 7985 5351
Diddy Kong Racing DS: 0688 1563 4718

Are there any potential problems with releasing Tetris on the VC?  Until very recently, I just assumed it was a given.  This morning I realized that THQ currently owns the license; does this affect re-releasing the NES version?
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Good question, which raises another. Tetris DS was developed and published by Nintendo seemingly without any involvement from THQ. Do Nintendo and THQ have a good enough relationship where THQ would just allow Nintendo to freely use the Tetris license?

I always thought that the Tetris Company holds all rights to the Tetris franchise, and licenses it out now.  THQ is not the only company creating and publishing versions of Tetris.

Makes sense. Another thing I just realized is that I have Tetris on my cell phone and this version is published by EA.
