Wire-based net connection?
« on: November 24, 2006, 04:37:01 PM »
My dad, being a masterful network engineer, has umpteen layers of security on the wireless network.  The wire network, however, may be a fair bit easier to access for the Wii... with one problem: how does one acquire an ethernet adapter for the Wii?  Also, is it possible to set up the connection to go through a proxy server?  That's another security feature, one that's caused me no end of grief in the past.

We know that there's an official Nintendo ethernet-to-usb converter that'll come out in Japan...sometime? launch maybe? Maybe it can be imported when it does come out... I'm pretty sure third party ethernet to usb converters don't work...

Or maybe one of those Nintendo USB-to-wireless adapters first released for the DS? Those also work for the Wii!

A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

It should come out Dec. 2nd, when Wii releases in Japan.

The DS adapter that hooks into your PC will work, so you can still have a wired connection except have your PC be a wireless access point for only DS and Wii.

Seeing as how that creates a hole in the home net, you may want to run such a plan by your folks.

You may just want to check with them though.  The Wii can handle most standard wireless security schemes, including WPA and WPA2.  On top of that you may need to give him the MAC address of your Wii, in case he does MAC filtering.

Alas, I am not a network expert like my dad.  How do I learn the MAC address for my Wii?

There's an option under the Wii Settings > Network Settings > MAC Address. I dunno, it's there, trust me, you can find it in 10 min even if you look at every single option.
