What I would like to see from a firmware update...
« on: November 23, 2006, 11:24:45 AM »
Ok, first things first, if for some reason you can already do this, then disregard...

Ok, I hope that Nintendo updates the firmware on the Wii to do the following:
1. Transfer the data from my gamecube memory card to the Wii's internal memory.
2. Be compatible with the classic controler
3. A way to manage you friends from the system seteup menu
4. Notifications of when your registered friends are online, or a way to tell.

Other updates that I don't see happening but would like:
1. Support for streaming information off of my Mac (With some extra software my 360 does this

We'll I can't think of anything else at the moment right now, so I'll just post

You don't know what firmware is, but I can help you out a little.

1. Is possible, but the Gamecube cannot access the internal flash memory.
2. I assume you mean Gamecube games - most likely isn't possible.
3. Would be nice.
4. Would be nice - count on it happening when online games are plentiful.

As far as streaming from your Mac - what kind of information? If you mean videos and music, don't count on it, Nintendo doesn't want to "take over your living room" they want to make a game console.

Why would Nintendo want to go against their "gaming-only" philosophy? Apple's iTV is coming out soon - that will handle all of your "Mac to TV" needs. MacWorld is a month and a half away.

The ability to Transfer saves between Wiis.  In fact the ability to transfer save FROM an SD card.  This doesn't seem to work right now.  Which stinks because I just got a my replacement console and my 24hrs (Actually played) worth of RRR and TP are lost to me.  Which means TP is going to be really boring for me in the first 10 hrs of redoing it.  I can't even transfer them back right after I copied them to the SD card...  So in summary the SD Card as of now is useless for game saves.

Nintendo sort have already gone against their 'gaming-only' philosophy by offering a News, Weather, and picture channel.

Wait a second, do you mean you can't transfer game data from the SD card to the computer and back again?

I imaging you could if it were the same Wii... It probably didn't work in the example above because they were two different systems.

Actually the above didn't work between two different systems, the same system w/out even removing the SD card (Copy save to SD, Delete save on Wii, and then try to transfer it back from the SD Card), or from a computer to the SD Card to the system.  Plane and simple didn't work.

Yeah, game saves should be transferable.  I guess maybe Nintendo used the same protection from the VC  for saves, probably as a blanket time saving solution, hopefully they change that.  Notifications for when friends are online would be great.

I want Miis that people send me to automatically be associated with the info for that person on my Wii contact list; it's stupid that it's not.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

You can definitely transfer saves between Wiis.  I just did it.  Put my Zelda save on an SD card.  Went home for Thanksgiving.  Transferred that save to my Dad's Wii.

No problems.  I have heard about problems with this and they all center around people who had 'broken' Wiis originally.  Because SD support was part of the upgrade that caused the issues, I think it was botched.  It does work now.

That isn't to say SD support is any good though, as it's still incredibly stupid and tedious.

In software (firmware) updates I would like to see:

1)More variety in Mii software.  Not much, but perhaps an addition to change a few elements in body type.  (A page for simple clothing manipulation for example)

2)Faster loads inbetween Wii channels and such.

3)Figure out a work around to get the virtual console to work with Gamecube games.  I think this is still in the works, and Nintendo has just not found to the perfect fix yet.  I am sure it isn't the easiest thing to trick the games into thinking they are being played with a Gamecube controller.

4)The ability to save everything to SD cards (virtual console games, channels, game saves)

5)The ability to save more friends into your system.  100 is good.  But I think 200 would be perfect.  As well 200 or 250 Miis would be good as well.  Since 100 Mii limit will be reached fast.

6)The ability to not only attach Mii pictures to identify who is sending a message, but also attach the Mii so that you can send things in one simple notice.  This could be also used with the Wii system code that when you add somebody in you put your Mii attached to the initial input, and then when they add you.  Both of you switch Miis and it automatically attaches to your system code.  (Does that make sense?)

All things considering though the Wii interface is brilliant and very user friendly.

You can save VC games to the SD card, but you can only play them on the system they were purchased with.

Ability to configure the virtual console buttons for the traditional controller.  Then we can get rid of that whiney thread!  (Seriously, it would be good).
