Something I noticed that I thought was odd...
« on: November 22, 2006, 03:53:06 PM »
... well, Odd, but not surprising...

Wii sends power to the GCN ports even when it's in standby mode.  I noticed this because it picked up my Wavebirds that were still on when it was "off".  Seems odd.
Just some random guy on the internet who has a different opinion of games than you.

I'd be surprised if standby mode was really as power saving as Nintendo claim.

Actually, according to the most recent numbers, Wii's standby mode sucks compared to the 360s....but it uses about 1/10 of the power of a 360 when actually playing games.  Everything BUT the standby mode is efficient...

Well knownothing all the 360 does while its in standby is that its ready to pick up a wireless signal from a controller to boot it up, while Wii has an active or perdiotic connection to Wiiconnect24 to check for messages and all those updates. Also if you want to leave the 360 on while your downloading something please refer to the idle at dashboard figure and the option for the auto shut off to standby mode on 360 takes 6 hours when the system is idle. So technically Wii is much more efficient than the 360.

Time to dig out my Kill-a-Watt

With Wiiconnect24, the system is obviously active while in standby.  I wonder what the numbers are if you disable that feature.  How does the consumption look over time if the feature is on... etc

Standby mode I think I'll shut off for now. When I woke up this morning, the Wii was EXTREMELY HOT after leaving it horizontally on the floor (only way to reach the outlet, no extension cords). Has anyone else had heat problems?

Maybe you were blocking one of the two vents on the Wii.

I just remembered something. When I was putting my wii in the verticle stand, I noticed that there was a fan on the bottom where it attaches to the verticle stand. That seems like a really bad place for a fan... although I could be wrong about the fan placement as I haven't looked at it since sunday.

I think there may be vents on the bottom, but I'm guessing the vertical stance allows a lot of heat to radiate from the sides.  I may turn standby mode off as well, I don't know yet.
That's my opinion, not yours.

Bild, does your floor have carpeting?

Just like a laptop, a carpeted floor is a bad place for a horizontal Wii. Keep it vertical in that circumstance. Using that round stand that came in the box should help keep it balanced upright.

There is a hole in the stand that I think serves just that purpose.
