I miss the tiny discs

The GC discs had a Mission Impossible feel to them.  I miss 'em.

I know the bigger ones offer larger capacity, but games like WiiSports and Excite Truck could be done on GC discs.  Same with other games.  

I'd rather even have 2 small discs than 1 large one.  Anyone else miss 'em?  They felt 'hi-tech.'

I liked them better but if it pleases developers and cuts down on games with horribly compressed audio/video (I'm looking at you, Prince of Persia) then it's worth it.

Honestly I think you should have had the option to download WiiSports to your SD card and run the game as a channel.  A whole 4.5 gig disc really isn't necessary.

I miss cartridges but I don't think Nintendo should go back to using them.  Big ugly discs are worth the benefits of more storage space.

The "SD as Carts" thing got me thinking a while back....

The Virtual Console games that we download likely aren't running on an emulator that's part of the Wii's firmware -- it's likely that they are self contained "applications" unto themselves.  Statically linked to the emulators, if you will.

Now, given that 32-128M SD cards are functionally free when compared to an average product's advertising budget, what you could do is (assuming permission from N):

  * Find a game house or engine that specializes in creating small, simple games
  * Create a small, simple SNES/N64 caliber game *as* an advertisement
  * Distribute in magazines/mass mailings/store kiosks this game on the SD card

There are enough small game houses that have experience making GBA and mobile games that a custom made 3-4 level arcade game promoting your product could cost $20,000 or so.  Which is a fraction of a modern marketing budget.

Screw advertisements *in* games, make the game the entire advertisement.

(I'm not looking at this from the PoV of a player, as these games would prolly suck, but from the point of view of a marketer.)

I wonder if it would even be possible to make Wii Games on GCN sized discs... I don't see why not?

Not going to happen.  Pressing a 4.7GB disc is almost infinitely cheaper than any size SD card.  Why not just put them on a disc and stick it in Nintendo Power?  Actually, it might be a great way to continue recouping the investment in the GD-ROM presses, by using the smaller discs as demos.

...don't ever buy an SD card at a retail store, unless you find a 1GB at CompUSA for like $15 with no rebates. Newegg is almost always the way to go. Just wanted to add that, in case people wanna buy SD cards for Custom Soundtracks or something.

Yeah i bought a sandisk 2 GB for 30 i thought that was a good deal over at Bestbuy i was almost tempted to buy a 1 GB A-Data SD Card for 24.99 then i look some more and thats when i ran into the 2 GB SD Card for 29.99 free shippin.....I just had too have it...lol

I think using flash to speed up load times in a similar way to sony's use of the hard drive would work well.

What if Nintendo sold a 20 disc Wii cd changer for the Wii that supported both GC and Wii discs and plugged right into the USB port?  That would be awesome.  Come on Nintendo.  Do it.  It would a high end product.

Doesn't putting in a GD-ROM make the Wii run in GC mode? Which is why we can't use the classic controller to play GC games?

I really liked the GC disks too, they were unique looking. In regards to flash memory used for carts to make a comeback, I really hope that turns out to be true because the cart based systems were much more durable since they had less moving parts. Sadly I think we are stuck with lots of moveable parts and DVD disks that aren't that durable. Hopefully handhelds though stick with a cartridge like format such as the NDS and don't go the way of the PSP (sorry but the PSP feels flimsy, and I am sure it will have a high burnout rate).

I remember reading that the gamecube discs were read in reverse of regular optical discs. They were read from the outside in instead of the inside out if that makes any sense. I wonder if the Wii DVDs are the same?  Has anyone tried reading one on a PC?

You can't read them on a PC because no one knows the filesystem, same with Xbox/360 discs...kind of. You would need a special firmware for your DVD drive. Gamecube discs are read just like any other disc though.
