Incest on the go!

"Games" like this make me think that the Tokyo Government was right to pass that law banning this sort of thing.  I love much of their anime and many of their games, but Japanese otaku culture really irritates me these days.

I like the Japanese culture that involved Samurais and Ninjas. That is cool. Otaku is not so great imho...

Otaku is a derogatory word for geeks or dedicated hobbyists in general, if I recall correctly, so lets not be messy with our words here. There are all sorts of otaku ranging from trains and firearms to fashion and photography.

Oriemo appeals to a particular subset of otaku that is dedicated to moe anime, manga, and other media characters. Those otaku is where we get the sensational headlines of a guy wanting to marry a body pillow or a character in the DS game Love Plus. The Japanese government Youth Ordinance Bill 156 is more or less going after those works since it has gotten so crazy these past few years.

Here's an editorial on how Bill 156 got passed for those curious. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/editorial/2010-12-28

Well, if you want to be precise, what the term "Otaku" actually refers to are people who are "obsessively" devoted to particular interests (just having an interest or hobby isn't sufficient), and it's a term that's widely used in Japan to specifically refer to those obsessed with "moe anime, manga, and other media characters."

Ah, I knew I was missing some details.
I'm curious to see how big of a second week drop off we'll see for the top selling games in Japan. I hope The Last Story and Valkyria Chronicles 3 stick around for weeks to come.

I think part of it was I would see commercials for the game during almost every single commercial break, even months later I would see ads for it. I don't even remember seeing a SMG2 commercial.

07. / 01. [WII] The Last Story (Nintendo) {2011.01.27} - 19.178 / 133.900 (-83%)

Wow, that was fast.  From best-selling to 7th in the space of a week, and "only" selling 133,900 copies in its lifetime so far.  Considering how much something like Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy sells in the land of RPGs, I expected a little bit better sales out of Last Story (though it's still selling decently).

I hope they have a 3DS version planned.

TLS3D might help re-coup the cost and benefit from being a "Launch Window" game and the only RPG for the system.

I didn't know there was a White Knight Chronicle PSP in development. Neat.

The 80% drop of The Last Story and Valkyria Chronicles 3 has me a bit bummed. I guess most of those who were interested bought it in the first week.

I couldn't care less about Valkyria Chronicles 3.  That series should never have left the PS3.  But I am concerned that NoA is going to look at the Japanese sales of Last Story and conclude that the game might have similar success for a week and then similarly die off.  I could see Nintendo of America only interested in bringing over games that can generate continual revenue (Mario Kart Wii, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, etc.), especially after Sin & Punishment 2 and Metroid Other M.

If NOA adopted that attitude then they would realistically just be Activision with better games.  Not every game can be Mario Kart Wii.  I'd argue that not every game SHOULD be Mario Kart Wii.  There is nothing wrong with niche games that sell to niche audiences and still make a profit.  Not everything has to be a big mainstream hit.  If Nintendo wants to truly be an "everyone" company then that means having games that only a section of the market like.  Not every Wii owner in America will want to buy Last Story but RPG fans will and releasing that game will make that specific group happy and satisified and encourage them to continue to support Nintendo.  "Everyone" means that that specific group of RPG fans has to be satisfied too and they require something more specific to their tastes.  "Mainstream" is just another demographic, though a large one.  Targetting the "mainsteam" is not at all the same as targetting "everyone".

As far as The Last Story is concerned, it could just be a case of late restocking. Original shipment was only ~140k, so given tracking discrepancies, it's virtually sold out of it's original shipment. If numbers are really low next week too, then we can really worry.

Wow! The PSP has exactly as many games on the charts as everything else combined. Where is the 3DS when you need it?

While I would've preferred more PS3 installments, the portable variants look like they are improving on the game (systems and mechanics at least).

Oh yeah! I forgot about that. Well, looking forward to what will happen when fresh copies of the game are printed.

I don't know, it's a short RPG in a country where short RPGs are digested in a week and then returned for quick cash, causing sales of new copies to die as used ones flood the market.  It'll keep selling, no doubt, but I don't think it's going to do too much better than it already has.

One thing that everyone should remember is thanks to NOA and NOE's advertising of Dragon Quest IX, it was able to sell over 1 million copies between North America and Europe.  The previous Dragon Quest games for the DS that were published by SquareEnix didn't sell anywhere close to those numbers.  Hell, Dragon Quest IV and V both only sold around 50k lifetime total in North America while thanks to NOA, Dragon Quest IX sold well over 100k it's first month.  This is the reason why NOA and NOE are publishing Dragon Quest VI because they were able to actually make the series a success outside of Japan, something SquareEnix couldn't.

So if NOA and NOE were able to take an RPG series that was basically unknown to the average gamer in North America and Europe and make it a success, there's no reason to believe they won't try to do the same for Xenoblade and The Last Story.  Especially in the case of The Last Story since it's gameplay and graphics already appeal to a western audience way more then the Dragon Quest series did.

Actually DQVIII sold over a million copies if you combined the two markets (NA and Europe) as well.  So you're theory is a bit broken because DQIX sold the least in NA, Europe sales are nearly double that of the NA market.  DQIX sales are still pretty damn poor outside of Japan.

As for the Japanese market, sudden drop in sales are nothing new as for sale figures for Last Story it's not doing great at all--it's falls within the normal sales figures for an WII RPG.  Look at Xenoblade and Tales of Graces sales for a reference.

JRPG's are a dying bred on a console, it's either handheld gaming or nothing.

As for VC3, you still haven't play VC2 Blood so you really shouldn't comment.  While VC2 wasn't as good as the orginal it's still prety damn decent IMO so I'm looking forward to VC3 as well.
