They just don't get Wii controls.

It's the only possible explanation.

It's nice to see Tomodachi Collection still going strong. It'll be interesting to see where its LTD ends up seeing as it hasn't dipped below 50k yet.

Anyone think 4 million is a possibility?

Considering most of the best sellers Nintendo has had are somewhat slow burners, it might be a possibility.

Well, I guess I was already wrong since Zelda is a game that is catered to the US and so is Metroid.
But when you sell in one(record setting) year in the US as much as you have sold in 3 years in Japan, it makes you wonder why there isn't more focus on things that would cater to the US Market even if htey have no appeal in the Japanese one.

I know Nintendo is all about universal appeal and games for everyone, but when you have one market that is making up roughly about 40-50% of your market, then I don't see what's wrong with putting them first a little more often.

I'm sure it would just help if they had more (competent) US based development studios that would give us games first so that we don't have to wait months after the Japanese version. We're not even guaranteed to get the Japanese version some time due to localization, general Japanese quirkiness or in some cases.... just because.

Not quite. Nintendo sold 3.8 million Wii's in December 2009 in the US, the Wii has sold about 9 million LTD in Japan.

Still, this is why even some Japanese publishers are starting to put more focus on the west (especially Capcom). Nintendo sorta seems to get it, they launched both the Nintendo DS and Wii in North America first (although the DS Lite, DSi, and DSi XL all came out in Japan first) and they continue to support the Metroid franchise despite the poor sales it gets in Japan. Nintendo at least seems to be getting better with localizing games, last gen we finally get long-running franchises like Advance Wars and Fire Emblem (both of which started out on the NES but had not been released outside of Japan).

I do wish they would give their US studio more independence. I know Sega was the model of how not to run a company, but their studios were so separated that their US studio would develop its own games independent of its Japanese parent and even created its own system (which got scrapped when Japan announced they were already making a system, a fact that they had not bothered to tell their US branch until they sent the nearly finished system to them to start promoting). Would it really hurt Nintendo to let NOA maybe develop a game on its own that caters more to a western audience?

I also don't know who to blame since I hear conflicting reports, but I am pissed that we don't get some games that even Europe gets (like Disaster: Day of Crisis). Nintendo also should have let Tecmo release Fatal Frame IV outside of Japan (supposedly they wanted to, but Nintendo had the publishing rights and refused to let them; a fact that wouldn't be so bad if Nintendo would publish it outside of Japan themselves).

On the flipside, you have the other two which seemed to base their decisions solely on the tastes of the western market, and they haven't done so well there.

Something that some may not want to hear is that Japanese developed games tend to be more marketable HERE than Western games being marketable over there.  So Nintendo focusing on Japan has the side effect of also being somewhat vicariously also focused on us too.  Notice that more than 1/2 of the games in the Top 20 in Dec 2009 were Eastern-developed games.  Yes it's mostly Nintendo, but Nintendo is still Japan, and most of those games are popular there too.

And of course there may also be that burning drive to help out their own struggling videogame market.  Just wish the rest of the companies there could take the hint too.
It's time you saw the future while you still have human eyes.

So 5 from Electronic Arts, 4 from Activision Blizzard, and 1 from Sega Sammy. EA and Activision just dominate PC games.

But when you sell in one(record setting) month in the US as much as you have sold in 3 years in Japan, it makes you wonder why there isn't more focus on things that would cater to the US Market even if htey have no appeal in the Japanese one.

Not quite. Nintendo sold 3.8 million Wii's in December 2009 in the US, the Wii has sold about 9 million LTD in Japan.

typo. I meant in 1 year with more than half of that being in the last 2 months (1.26M Nov. + 3.81M Dec.).

What a sad state PC gaming is in these days. WoW, Sims, and console ports seems to be the best we can hope for. I guess we have STEAM, but I imagine with STEAM included the top contenders wouldn't be much different.

I'm about to build a new gaming PC, personally.  Maybe I'm just crazy, but I don't think a top ten list full of PC gaming's version of "The Wii is destroying gaming" is reason to give up.

NPD is pretty amazing for Wii, wow. Guess those who said it was on decline were wrong (again). Looks like NSMB:Wii was a big game after all (as it should be).

I wonder how much of the Wii's success was because of the price drop and how much was because of NSMB. Without those two factors I'm sure it wouldn't have broken records. This will be enough to get Nintendo through the 1st quarter of the year too, but after that the Wii is going to need something else going for it.

I meant during the month of December. Metroid, Zelda, and SMG are all old games that couldn't have been a huge factor in the December charts. NSMB was new, and the price drop was new, so that's why I'm pretty sure those were the main factors for December's results.

I think part of it had to do with all the Wii commercials. It seemed like every commercial break had a Wii commercial from Walmart (which featured different games, including Wii Fit Plus and New Super Mario Bros. Wii).
