NPD doesn't include Canadian sales in their main tally do they?

"Catching up" implies that the gap is being closed...Sony only slowed Wii's charge ahead of them by only 20,000 units, and that's only because there was the temporary price-drop on the now non-existent 60GB model...As for BioShock, as good as the game is, it's not a system seller...

The 60gig PS3 is still available at most retailers.  Sony manufactured a lot of those things.  So they will probably still be on shelves for a while longer.  Amazon has them in stock.

NPD has a separate Canada version.  Also the PS3 did sixty percent better then it did last month on NPD; though the Wii is really the big story there.  I don't think the PS3 received a price drop in Japan.

Halo is going to sell lots of systems in the US, but not necessarily in Japan. And Japan is where MS most desperately needs those sales, to make their business viable in both the short and long term.

I wonder what it would take to make the 360 appeal to the Japanese market...

Actually, wasn't June a 5 week month and July a 4 week month according to NPD dates? The PS3 sales actually increased to 200% over June's figures, if you factor in the shorter reporting period.

Does this mean that Wii has just barely missed hitting 10 million b4 MS's Xbox360?
9 months vs 20(+?) months and the Wii just barely missed beating them to their mark!?

Didn't MS announce 10 million shipped 5 months ago? What took them so long to sell?
Thats is pretty sad

How about consistently making games which appeal the average Japanese gamer? They did make Blue Dragon and that caused 360 sales to jump for awhile, but they didn't follow through on that with anything else.

Microsoft has zillions of dollars in the bank so they could force out Japanese approved content by the truck load, but they aren't doing that. Instead they focus on Halo and similar games which appeal primarily to Western gamers.

I doubt Halo 3 will make Xbox 360s jump off the shelf.

Xbox 360 has already released several games that appeal to the exact same demographic as Halo 3.  Meaning, that those who want to play Halo 3 have probably already bought an Xbox 360 for other games similar.  I am sure there are several people that have been waiting for Halo 3 to buy Xbox 360, but I doubt that number is going to create a drastic increase in Xbox 360 sales.

I however do not believe the same about the Wii.  I think there are several people waiting for certain games to come out before buying a Wii.

A gamer who enjoys Wario Ware may not enjoy Prime 3...and vice versa so people may be waiting for a Wii for Prime 3.

The same can be said about almost all of Nintendo's first party games coming out THIS year because they are all drastically different genres, and have large mass appeal.

I am very curious to see if BioShock creates a large jump in sales for the 360, because that is about the jump I expect to see when Halo 3 comes out.

On the other hand, I don't expect to see jumps in Wii sales, mainly because they will all be sold out anyway, so how can a jump be created when stock can't stay on the shelf.

I agree... however, a price cut + Halo 3 could be a strong team in picking up 360 sales (maybe they will finally pass the PS2?)

I agree. From Nintendo's point of view it doesn't matter if people are waiting for games before buying their systems, because they sell out of Wiis regardless. It might matter more to them if they were like Sony and lost money on each hardware sale and had to make it up with games sales, but they don't They profit handsomely from even the hardware sales, so they can bid their time on the games and space them out and give them the extra spit and polish necessary to make them perfect.

That's also pretty much why the Wii game library isn't that impressive right now. But by Christmas that will change. Hopefully Nintendo manages to increase Wii shipments by then...

I think Halo 3 is definitely going to have an effect on Hardware sales...Microsoft claims that a large percentage of 360 owners were not Xbox 1 owners, and even if you don't believe that, there are still 10-15 million Xbox owners have yet to buy a 360 based on hardware sales.

I think the lack of Halo and the lack of a price cut have both been holding back sales and I believe there will be a noticeable jump...but that's not to say that I disagree with the "360 aleady has the Halo demographic covered" argument.  In the bigger picture, Halo 3 will sell systems, but it won't sell systems to people that think Xbox 360's current lineup is boring...just people who needed that extra justification to spend the money.

People who think 360's lineup is boring need more games like Blue Dragon and Viva Pinata.  Microsoft is trying to bring those to market, but I think Nintendo's two previous home consoles proved that buying exclusives is not the way to broaden your game selection...it can result in an awesome cult classic lineup (N64), but you'll never compete with pure third party domination.

Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Resident Evil and Metroid Prime could not shake the "for kids" badge, and Viva Pinata and Blue Dragon won't shake the "for young males" badge.
That's my opinion, not yours.
