ANYWAY, wouldn't it be hilarious if Mario Galaxy outsold Halo 3?
Worldwide, not at all. Sunshine sold about 6 million on the Cube of all consoles, while Halo 2 sold around 8 million. That was when there was all that irrational bashing on Sunshine, and when Nintendo's mindshare was at an alltime low.

Considering the phenomenal success of New Super Mario Bros and the incredible popularity of the Wii (plus the above average software tie-in ratio), it's just about the perfect time for Galaxy to make a killing in sales. The only thing stopping it would be a shortage of hardware.

Hell, it already has like 500,000 preorders in Japan last I checked. That's more than even NSMB and Animal Crossing DS got.

Not to mention when it comes to sales, longevity is key - Halo 2 and 3 exploded out of the gates, but 2 hit a brick wall shortly after. I expect 3 to sell quite a bit more, but it won't really have legs.

Those are retailker pre-orders IceCold, 700,000 at first.

But yeah, I'm just hoping and praying that MP3 has legs and gets through to somewhere over 1 million sold in the US alone... it almost has no chance of catching up to Metroid Prime 1 at this point, which I guess is understandable (since now everyone knows that Metroid Prime games aren't for everyone...) but still disappointing.

The Wii's numbers are fantastic.  Almost equaling the 360 during its release of the biggest game of the generation.

The smallish sales for MP:3 are very troubling.  What games do people buy with a Wii anyway?  It looks like almost everyone who bought the console last month didn't bother to pick up its best game with it.

Hasn't MP3 sold pretty well though? I would like to see how it compared to something like Bioshock. ANYWAY, wouldn't it be hilarious if Mario Galaxy outsold Halo 3?

Bioshock sold almost 500,000 units in August.

Hmm.. that makes sense. I was kind of surprised when I heard that figure, since Japan usually likes their 2D Mario games more than the 3D ones.

Because people will be breaking down doors to buy a gimped PS3 with NO PS2 compatibility and no killer app.

I don't know what Sony was thinking with that move.    You would think that they would look at last generation and see how much backward compatibility helped them, then look at how strong the PS2 is staying, and then look at the developement costs to go strictly PS3 games and do the math.  It make more sense for Nintendo to come out and release a Wii for $200 that axes backward compatibility for to be a little smaller or just a different color.  Even $230 because, no one makes Cube games anymore and you have to jump through hoops to use it, have a Gamecube controller and Memory Card, compared to the Non-Gimped PS3 where you can use its harddrive as your memory card and the Sixaxis as your PS2 controller.  Just sort of silly in the end.

You can't tell that the backwards compatibility would have have been that much to implement, even if it was emulation. People are forgetting the fact that even with all the gimped features it still is TOO EXPENSIVE for the average consumer.

Wow, the Wii continues to crush with sales.  And Nintendo has one last month of no games until the flood gates open.

I mean Mid November I have a list of 6 games I want to buy.  INSANE.  Once the gate opens the Wii is going to be hard to find again.

I only hope and pray that after Microsoft opened its big mouth about Halo 3 sales, that Galaxy can dwarf its sales numbers.  Maybe not in money made, since Halo 3 had horrible pricing with the the special and legendary editions, but with numbers sold.  That would make my day.

Well I wouldn't be surprised if Mario Galaxy makes more a profit, Halo 3 had to have a tremendous budget in both marketing and production.

If Microsoft played there cards right it might have gotten people to buy the rights to advertise with Halo 3 attached to there product.

I can pretty much assume that its the exact same amount of work as it is for the 80 gig and European versions.  Unless it took a base hardware hit as well beyond losing the built in PS2.

Wii fad confirmed.

That's a lot of serious jack. Wish I could read the damn PDF report.

So far they're more than halfway past the GameCube userbase in 10 months. Judging from the projected numbers (I think), they're expecting to ship another 10m by the end of March, which means they'll pass GameCube's userbase in less than 16 months if they sell all their shipments.

Useless facts: At this point in the GameCube's life (Oct 2002), Nintendo was already bundling Mario Sunshine and a Memory Card 59. And they were expecting to sell their 10 millionth Cube by the following March.

10 million vs. 24 million at 16 months.
"wow."

What did Nintendo say their goal was for shipping software numbers in a year?

The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

Nintendo is now manufacturing the Wii at PS2 rates. Observe:

Quote

"We're still focusing on how to meet booming demand," Iwata said Friday. "We're absolutely not considering a price cut." He said Nintendo was ramping out 1.8 million Wii consoles per month but that a supply crunch was inevitable during the Christmas sales.

While they definitely didn't start the year at 1.8 million a month, if they manufacture at this level for an entire continuous 12 months, they would see 21.6 million Wiis in a year, which is about the sort of number that the PS2 shipped in many of its own years.

Have we figured out why the Japan sales have fallen 66% in the last month?  It can't be anything short-term like shortages anymore.
